Nabard award to Repco Micro Finance Ltd

Repco Micro Finance Ltd, a non-banking finance company received Nabard 2018 award. The award is given service to self-help group in Tamil Nadu for the fiscal year 2017-18. The NBFC has disbursed loans amounting to ` 2,500 crore to over 10 lakh beneficiaries. NABARD Financial Services Limited is a subsidiary of NABARD to provide financial services in areas of agriculture & microfinance.

Anukreethy Vas crowned Miss India 2018

Tamil Nadu’s Anukreethy Vas was named Miss India at the 55th Femina Miss India 2018. Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar, who won the title last year, crowned Anukreethy, who will go on to represent India at Miss World. Haryana’s Meenakshi Chaudhary stood second while Andhra Pradesh’s Shreya Rao Kamavarapu ranked third. Malaika Arora and Irfan Pathan were among the judges.

Acid Leak at Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi

A Sulphuric acid leak is detected at Sterlite Copper plant, a Vedanta group company in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The leak was detected in one of the storage units but as the plant was non-operational nobody was harmed. The evacuation from the sulphuric acid plant would take a day with assistance of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Inspectorate of Factories.

Tamil Nadu to ban e-cigarette

16 : Tamil Nadu is planning to ban electronic cigarettes, battery-operated inhalers that emit doses of vaporised nicotine, state Health Minister Vijaya Baskar told the assembly. An electronic cigarette or e-cigarette is a handheld electronic device that simulates the feeling of tobacco smoking. It works by heating a liquid to generate an aerosol, commonly called a “vapor”, that the user inhales.

TN to ban on disposable plastic from 2019

Tamil Nadu government announced a ban on manufacture, sales, storage and usage of disposable plastic across State with effective from January 1, 2019. However, the ban excludes using disposable plastic for packaging milk, curd, oil and medical utilities. The ban was primarily on plastic carry bags, plastic plates, plastic cups, plastic flags, small plastic sachets used in packaging water.

India among top 5 in e-waste generation

5 : India is among the top five e-waste generating countries in the world besides China, the US, Japan and Germany, according to a report. Among states, Maharashtra contributes the largest e-waste of 19.8% but recycles only about 47,810 tonne per annum (TPA), the report released by Assocham and NEC. Tamil Nadu with e-waste contribution of 13% recycled about 52,427 TPA.

Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency got award

Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency (TNeGA) has received an award for promoting ease of doing business. TNeGA developed an investor facilitation portal that provides single window clearance to industrial proposals in the state. The award was given in recognition of simplification of procedure and ease with which clearances from various authorities can be procured by a business.

TN to build India’s next generation aircraft

The Aeronautical Development Agency has set the ball rolling for building the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft by extending an invitation to private players in Tamil Nadu (TN). It is the first time an indigenous military aircraft programme is seeing the involvement of private players. It is also the first time a defence plane development project is proposed to be executed outside Bengaluru.

TNAU seed centre bags award

The seed centre at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has bagged an award for excellence in research on seed technology. The best performance centre award was presented at the annual group meeting of the all-India coordinated research project on national seed projects. All agricultural universities under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research participated in the meet.

New snake found in Western Ghats

The snake, currently observed only in the forests of the Anaikatty hills in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district, has been named Uropeltis bhupathyi. The reptile belongs to a family of snakes found only in peninsular India and Sri Lanka. They are non-venomous, burrowing and mostly earthworm-eating.

India, Russia Sign 7 MoU At DefExpo 2018

India and Russia signed 7 MoUs at Defence Expo at Chennai, Tamil Nadu.These MoUs were signed for manufacture, development of spares, sub-assemblies and assemblies of identified Russian origin platforms. The MoUs were signed during third India-Russia Military-Industrial Conference held on the sidelines of DefExpo 2018.

Dedicated defence, aerospace SME fund

Department of Defence Production announced the creation of a dedicated defence and aerospace small and medium enterprises (SME) fund.This fund would help channelise investments into the two defence corridors announced by the Government in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. The fund is registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India where a minority stake could be taken by investors.

TN Govt Launches “Uzhavan” App for Farmers

Tamil Nadu government has launched the bi-lingual “Uzhavan” (farmer) app that will allow ryots to have access to nine types of services.The app can be used by farmers to get information on farm subsidies, book farm equipment and details about crop insurance. The app is available in Tamil and English language & includes information on the availability of seeds and fertilisers at stores.

India’s first insect museum opened

An insect museum which is fully dedicated to insects and is claimed to be the first of its kind in the country was opened in Tamil Nadu. It would display insects preserved as specimens as also live ones depicting their different developmental stages, images, videos and models of their unique behaviour, habits and habitats. The theme of the museum is ‘BUGS ARE KINGS’

Bilaspur’s stone age tools link to Sivaliks

Researchers from the Anthropological Survey of India have discovered a number of Acheulian artefacts (dated to about 1, 500,000–1,50,000 years ago) along with Soanian ones from an unexplored site at Ghumarwin in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. The Soanian stone age cultures date to 6,00,000 years ago. The oldest dated Acheulian sites in India are those at Attirampakkam in Tamil Nadu.

Vijay Sankar is Honorary Consul General

Vijay Sankar, deputy chairman of The Sanmar Group, has been appointed the Honorary Consul General for Denmark in Chennai. His consular district consists of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka and Puducherry. Mr Sankar succeeds his father N. Sankar and grandfather K. S. Narayanan, who had earlier served as Honorary Consuls for Denmark in south India.

India’s first offshore wind turbines

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) will set up India‘s first offshore wind turbines at Arichamunai near Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu. This region was selected on the basis of the quality and speed of the wind which was found to be good. The MNRE will install 4 to 5 wind turbines, each with the capacity to generate a minimum of 6 MW of power.

Odisha to collaborate with RIMES

The Odisha State Disaster Mitigation Authority (OSDMA) will collaborate with the Thailand-based Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES) for strengthening its early warning services and enhancing preparedness for management of hazards in the State. OSDMA and RIMES would forge a partnership in the field of drought monitoring. RIMES is already working with the Tamil Nadu.

India’s largest wind turbine generator

Renewable solution provider Suzlon Group announced the installation and commissioning of its new product ‘S128’ claiming it to be the largest wind turbine generator in India. The first prototype of S128 has been commissioned at the Sanganeri site in Tamil Nadu. This has the country‘s largest single rotor blade measuring 63 metres and reduced levelised cost of energy.

Bengal tops in rural job scheme

West Bengal has become the best performing State both in terms of allotting jobs and utilising funds under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. West Bengal generated more than 28.21 crore work days under the scheme so far in 2017-18 and spent more than Rs.7,335.31 crore for it. Tamil Nadu occupied the second spot with 22.17 crore work days and spent Rs.5,981.75 crore.

Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal, the senior seer of Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt situated in Tamil Nadu, passed away. He was 82-years-old. The junior pontiff, Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi will be the 70th Jagadguru of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. Fairfax to acquire 51% stake in CSB

Canadian investor Prem Watsa’s owned Fairfax Holdings will buy a 51% stake in Kerala-based Catholic Syrian Bank.The deal, if it materialises, will be the first takeover of an Indian bank by a foreign non-banking financial entity after RBI tweaked ownership norms last May. Founded in 1921, CSB has a strong base in Kerala & a significant presence in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka & Maharashtra.

Cauvery Water Dispute

Declaring Cauvery a national asset & upholding principle of equitable apportionment of inter-State river water among riparian States, the SC reduced the allocation of Cauvery water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu.Karnataka would now need to supply 177.25 TMC rather than 192 TMC Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. Court has also granted global status to Bengaluru, hence it will get more Cauvery water.

TN won Senior Women’s Football Championship

Tamil Nadu has won the Senior Women’s National Football Championship for the first time.Tamil Nadu, which was playing its first-ever final, defeated Manipur, 2-1 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Odisha. Skipper Indumathi and Indrani found the net for Tamil Nadu, while Ratanbala scored Manipur’s only goal.

Kerala, Punjab and Tamil Nadu were the top rankers in NITI Aayog’s latest Health Index report.Report for the first time, attempted to establish an annual systematic tool to measure and understand the heterogeneity and complexity of the nation’s performance in the health sector.The report was released on Friday by Amitabh Kant (CEO of NITI Aayog).

5 states account for 70% of exports

The Economic Survey 2017-18 has revealed that five states– Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Telangana, accounted for 70% of India’s exports for the first time.The survey found that states’ export performance and their standard of living were strongly interrelated. It also noted that India’s internal trade in goods and services accounted for an estimated 60% of GDP.

Tamil Nadu clinches men’s crown

Tamil Nadu beat Services by 94-86, in the final to emerge the men’s champion of the senior National basketball championship at the Nehru indoor stadium.This is Tamil Nadu’s tenth title in the men’s category. Railways beat Chhattisgarh 100-71 in the women’s final for its 28th title in 32 years. Captain P.U. Navaneetha top-scored with 30 points.

Rs 68,270 crore invested in development

According to data from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Rs 68,270 crore were released under various schemes across the country from 2014-15 till November 2017.Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat emerged as the biggest beneficiaries of the government funding. Swachh Bharat Mission, PMAY, AMRUT are some of the missions which have been funded.

Supreme Court directed the Union government to set up a special committee to exclusively prepare disaster management plans for 122 years old Mullaiperiyar dam.A three-judge Bench led by CJI Dipak Misra also directed Tamil Nadu, which owns the dam, and Kerala, where it is situated, to set up similar committees. The Mullaperiyar Dam is a masonry gravity dam on the Periyar River in Kerala.

BCCI bans all-rounder Yusuf Pathan

Indian all-rounder Yusuf Pathan handed a five-month retrospective suspension for failing a dope test.The 35-year-old Pathan had provided a urine sample as part of the BCCI’s anti-doping testing program during a domestic T20 match between his team Baroda and Tamil Nadu on March 16 last year.His sample was subsequently tested and found to contain Terbutaline.

APY subscriber base touches 80 lakh-mark

PFRDA-run Atal Pension Yojana (APY) has reached a subscriber base of 80 lakh.Uttar Pradesh is the highest contributing state at 11.41 lakh APY subscribers, followed by Bihar and Tamil Nadu at 8.87 lakh and 6.60 lakh respectively. Atal Pension Yojana is a government-backed pension scheme in India targeted at the unorganised sector. It was launched in the year 2015.

Tamil Nadu tops in with 46.9% GER

Tamil Nadu which has the highest Gross Enrollment Ratio in higher education in the country has registered an increase of 2.6% to take GER to 46.9% in 2016-17.It is according to the results of All India Survey on Higher Education released by the ministry of human resource development. Half of the students in the age group of 18-23 years in the state are enrolling themselves into colleges.

NHPC to invest in solar project: Odisha

Central public sector enterprise, NHPC Ltd has proposed to set up 100-200 Mw capacity solar project in Odisha. Odisha has laid out a plan to develop a solar park with a production capacity of 1000 Mw.NHPC, which is currently executing a 72 Mw wind project in Kerala and 50 Mw solar project in Tamil Nadu has already commissioned a 50 Mw wind power project in Jaisalmer.

RBL opens all women branch in Chennai

Private sector RBL Bank inaugurated an all women branch in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The all-women branch in Chennai will be managed by eight women and will offer all products and services across liability and assets. This initiative is RBL Bank’s efforts in encouraging gender equality. It was founded in 1943 and is headquartered in Mumbai. It’s current CEO is Vishwavir Ahuja.

Shagun became National Champion

Shagun Chowdhary bagged a national champion crown when she won the women’s trap event at the 61st National Shooting Championship, in New Delhi. She represented ONGC and is the first Indian woman trap shooter to win an Olympic berth. She overcame the challenge from Punjab’s Rajeshwari Kumari. N Nivetha of Tamil Nadu won the Junior Women’s title in the same event shooting 37.

Srirangam temple wins UNESCO award

Srirangam temple of Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu has won the UNESCO Asia Pacific Award of Merit 2017 for cultural heritage conservation. The use of traditional methods in renovating temple and re-establishment of rainwater harvesting and historic drainage system were the main reasons behind getting the award. It has become the first temple in Tamil Nadu to be given the prestigious award.

Ban on pics of living persons on banners

Madras high court banned the use of pictures of living persons on banners and hoardings in Tamil Nadu. The order states that, pictures of the chief minister, ministers or politicians cannot be used in posters or hoardings. It has also banned the use of photos of people sponsoring the pictures.

TU142M aircraft museum in Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for the TU142M aircraft museum in Vishakhapatnam. This is being built at the Beach Road in Vishakhapatnam. The Russian aircraft TU142M was decommissioned at INS Rajali in Tamil Nadu after 29 years. It was brought to Visakhapatnam on 8th April 2017 to be converted into a Museum.

Jagdish Mukhi to be Governor of Assam

Jagdish Mukhi was sworn in as new Governor of Assam. He was administered oath of office by Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajit Singh. Before this, Mukhi served as the lieutenant governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He succeeded Banwarilal Purohit who has been appointed as the governor of Tamil Nadu.

Record 3.5 lakh tons coffee in 2017-18

9 : Coffee output in India is pegged to be a record 3.50 lakh tonnes in the 2017-18, as marketing year started this month on higher acreage. According to the Coffee Board, the final output stood at 3.12 lakh tonnes in 2016-17. Higher output is mainly attributed to the additional bearing area of about 13,500 hectares in traditional growing areas of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Purohit becomes governor of TN

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit was sworn-in by Madras High Court Chief Justice Indira Banerjee at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai. He entered the Maharashtra Assembly for the first time in 1978 from the Nagpur east seat. Mr. Purohit was appointed as Governor of Assam State by the President of India on August 17, 2016.

President Kovind has appointed 5 new Governors for the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Assam & Meghalaya. BD Mishra was appointed as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh while Satya Malik & Jagdish Mukhi were appointed as the governors of Bihar & Assam respectively. Banwarilal Purohit was appointed as the Governor of Tamil Nadu while Ganga Prasad was made the governor of Meghalaya

RBI to introduce Rs. 100 Coin

Reserve Bank of India will introduce 100 rupees coin to mark the birth centenary of AIADMK founder Late Dr M G Ramachandran. The face of the coin will bear Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the centre with Satyamev Jayate inscribed below on it in Devnagari script. RBI will also issue new Rs. 5 and Rs. 10 coins to honour the former Tamil Nadu chief minister and the Bharat Ratna-winning singer.

TMB gets new MD & CEO

KV Rama Moorthy has assumed charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tamilnadu Mercantile Bank. He succeeds HS Upendra Kamath, whose term of three years came to an end in July, 2017. Moorthy’s appointment is for a period of three years. Prior to joining TMB, he was Executive Director of United Bank of India and had also served as ED of Bank of Baroda for a brief period.

FSFB starts operations

Fincare Small Finance Bank (previously known as Disha Microfin Ltd) kick-started its banking operations with 25 operational branches across Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It was given final SFB licence by RBI in May this year. . Bank aims to be digitally driven, rural and semi-urban bank, focusing on the priority sectors and retail segments of micro and small enterprises.

Winner of Miss Transqueen India 2017

Nitasha Biswas, a trans woman who hails from Kolkata, was crowned Miss Trans Queen India 2017, winner of the first beauty pageant for trans women in the country. Loiloi Haorongbam from Manipur became the 1st runner-up, while Ragasiya from Tamil Nadu, was the 2nd runner-up. Nitasha will now represent India at the Miss International TransQueen in Thailand in March 2018.

Yatra against child trafficking

Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi would embark on a 35-day Bharat Yatra, leading a fight against child trafficking & child sexual abuse across the country. The yatra will begin in Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on September 11 and will conclude in Delhi on October 15, after covering 22 states. The start of Bharat Yatra will mark the launch of a three-year campaign against child sexual abuse.

One year exemption for TN from NEET

Central govt has decided to grant exemption of 1 year from NEET system for students of govt colleges in Tamil Nadu. TN comprises of more than 90% students from State Board, which makes it difficult for them to qualify NEET which is based on CBSE syllabus. NEET is an entrance exam for students who wish to study graduate medical course or PG course in govt or private medical colleges in India.

Book On ‘Mann Ki Baat’

Governor of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu C. Vidyasagar Rao and Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis released the book ‘Mann Ki Baat – A Social Revolution on Radio’. The book, among other things, includes transcripts of the first 23 episodes of ‘Mann Ki Baat’. The book enables citizens to read and understand Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and his ideas of development.

P Chandra Sekharan passes away

Renowned forensic expert and Padma Bhushan awardee Prof Dr P Chandra Sekharan passed away. He served over 30 years as director of Department of Forensic Sciences, Govt of Tamil Nadu. He played a key role in numerous sensational cases including the assassination case of former PM Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. He was author of many books including “The first human bomb,” based on Rajiv Gandhi case.

TN to set up Rs. 2350 cr solar park

The Tamil Nadu government will setup an Ultra Mega Solar Photovoltaic Power Park in Ramanathapuram district at an estimated cost of Rs. 2350 crore. State-run TANGEDCO will establish the 500 MW power park on Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) basis at Naripaiyur and adjoining villages in the district. It is one of the several new initiative launched by the government.

Sand scheme after Sonia Gandhi

Puducherry government plans to offer cement at subsidised rates to low and middle income people, and name the scheme after Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Since puducherry does not have industries manufacturing cement, so it will be procured from outside and sold at subsidised price. Due to shortage of sand in Puducherry people have to depend on Tamil Nadu for sand.

1st IT workers union in Tamil Nadu

India’s first independent union for information technology employees is being setup in Tamil Nadu. The Forum for Information Technology Employees, which evolved from the campaign to protect Tamils in Sri Lanka, is in the process of getting itself registered formally as a union for technology employees in India. The Forum for Information Technology Employees has over 1,000 members.

Padma bestowed with Avvaiyar award

Tamil Nadu govt honoured social worker Padma Venkataraman with the state’s “Avvaiyar Award” for 2017. Padma, daughter of former President of India, the late R Venkataraman, was honoured for her efforts in the areas of women’s welfare and rehabilitation of leprosy-affected persons for the past 30 years.

1 GW ultra mega solar park in Andhra

The world’s largest single-location solar park of 1,000 megawatts is nearing completion in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. 900 MW of the 1,000 MW has been already commissioned at the Park, and the remaining will be fully operational next month. It has already become the largest such park outpacing 648 MW solar park developed by in Tamil Nadu and Topaz Solar Park of 550 MW in California.

Karnataka the most corrupt state

Karnataka occupies the first slot in a list of states perceived to be corrupt on the basis of people’s experience in paying bribes for public services. Karnataka is followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab. Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Chhattisgarh are least corrupt. The report was published by Centre for Media Studies.

TN leads MHRD’s top-100 colleges list

A whopping 37 colleges in Tamil Nadu have made it to the rankings released by the Ministry of HRD, with three TN colleges coming in the top-10 list. Delhi’s Miranda House has the top spot in the list. Chennai’s Loyola College came in the number two spot. A total of 535 colleges have been ranked in this first-time exercise.

TN replaces ration card with smart card

Ration cards in Tamil Nadu are all set to go fully digital with. The state has launched a smart family card scheme to replace 1.89 crore cards in the state at a cost of Rs 330 crore. Consumers can continue to buy commodities at PDS outlets by using their existing ration cards till such time they received the smart cards.

KVB bags best small bank award

Karur Vysya Bank has been adjudged the ‘Best Small Bank for 2016’ (balance sheet size of less than ` 1-lakh crore). This is the eighth award won by KVB in the current fiscal. Karur Vysya Bank is an Indian private-sector bank, headquartered in Karur in Tamil Nadu.

17 : India Vetiver Network (INVN) has been launched at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here. INVN is a not-for-profit scientific network to promote vetiver in India. Vetiver has worldwide application to tackle many environmental issues like soil erosion, mitigation of soil and water pollution. The mission of INVN is environmental protection using vetiver.

Tamil Nadu govt cancels plot allotted for Coca-Cola plant

The Tamil Nadu government cancelled allotment of land for Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd to set up a bottling unit in Perundurai, the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (SIPCOT) complex in Erode district, amid growing protests by local residents over possible exploitation of groundwater. The Tamil Nadu government took the decision to cancel the lease agreement, blaming the firm for “not complying with the terms”. It was on June 21, 2013, SIPCOT allotted the land first and after two amendments in the agreement, a lease deed was executed and registered finally by HCCBPL on January 23, 2014.

Union Cabinet approved to set up India-based Neutrino Observatory in Tamil Nadu

Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 5 January 2015 approved to set up the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) in Tamil Nadu. The INO laboratory will host experiments such as the neutrino-less double beta decay and the search for dark matter. The INO project will be set up near Pottipuram village in the Bodi West Hills of Theni district in Tamil Nadu. The project is at an estimated cost of 1500 crore rupees. The project also includes Inter-Institutional Centre for High Energy Physics (IICHEP) and Iron Calorimeter Detector (ICAL).
