Lebanon holds maiden parliamentary elections

Polling has begun across Lebanon, where voters are going to elect their parliament for first time in 9 yrs. Last elections in the country were held in 2009, for what was supposed to be a 4 yr term. But parliament extended its term twice due to instability in neighbouring Syria. Lebanon has one of the world’s highest debt-to-GDP ratios & IMF has warned its fiscal trajectory is unsustainable.

Syria returned prestigious Legion d’honneur

Syria has returned to France the prestigious Legion d’honneur presented to President Bashar al-Assad.President Assad was decorated with the highest class of the award, the Grand Croix, in 2001 after he took power following the death of his father. France recently joined the US and Britain in bombing Syrian targets over an alleged chemical weapons attack.

Over 5 lakh children under siege: UNICEF

UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for lifting sieges and allowing immediate humanitarian access. Nearly 500,000 children are living under siege amid escalating violence across Syria. The number of children living under siege has doubled in less than one year, Xinhua news agency quoted UNICEF as saying in a press release.
