Railways to export DMU train sets to Sri Lanka

Indian Railways is all set to establish its footprint in Sri Lanka with the export of 6 DMU (diesel multiple units) train sets consisting of 78 modern coaches worth Rs 600 crore. DMU train sets do not require separate locomotives as the engines are incorporated into one or more of its coaches. The contract will be funded under the Indian Line of Credit to Sri Lanka announced in 2011.

Indian warship INS Trikand reaches Sri Lanka

India’s frontline warship INS Trikand has reached Sri Lanka in a goodwill visit. Senior Indian officers, including Lt. Colonel Ravi Shekhar Mishra held discussions on matters of mutual interest with their Lankan counterparts. INS Trikand is a state-of-the-art warship of the Indian Navy equipped with a versatile range of weapons & sensors capable of addressing threats in all 3 dimensions.

Sri Lanka to shift its naval base

Sri Lanka is shifting one of its naval base to a port controlled and built by China. This move will strengthen the security at a harbour that China might use for military purposes. The base is currently in the Galle district and will be moved 125 km east along the southern coast of Sri Lanka to Hambantota.

India, Sri lanka agree on information exchange

India & Sri Lanka have agreed on cooperation on exchange of information & other aspects to tackle smuggling of drugs in both countries. The decision was taken at the 3rd bilateral meeting between India’s Narcotics Control Bureau & Sri Lanka’s Police Narcotics Bureau. Use of sea route to smuggle drugs & sharing of best practices & training needs were also a part of the discussion.

GSL Delivers 2nd „AOPV? to Sri Lankan Navy

Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has delivered second Sri Lanka Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel (SL AOPV) of Sri Lankan Navy ceremoniously at Vaddem, Vasco da Gama. The vessel will be the largest and most advanced ship in the Sri Lankan Navy fleet. This is the fourth Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) delivered to Sri Lanka in the current financial year.

Sri Lanka Cricket released book on Dalmiya

Sri Lanka Cricket paid glowing tribute to the former BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya by releasing a book, titled =A Tribute to Jagu‘. SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala lauded Dalmiya‘s role in strengthening the Asian Bloc. They felicitated him posthumously as the greatest non-Sri Lankan contributor to their country‘s cricket. Jagmohan Dalmiya headed ICC from 1997-2000 & BCCI from 2001-04.

Sri Lanka lifted nationwide state of emergency

Sri Lanka has lifted a state of emergency that was put in place after an outbreak of violence against Muslim communities. The emergency was imposed to control communal violence after Buddhists and Muslims clashed in the country‘s central district of Kandy. It was the first time in seven years Sri Lanka had imposed a state of emergency.

MoU between India and Sri Lanka

The Union Cabinet has approved MoU inked between India and Sri Lanka for promoting cooperation in field of IT. The MoU aims to promote co-operation in the areas such as e-governance, m-governance, electronics-public services delivery, cyber security, software technology parks, startups etc. It will be implemented by constituting a Working Group comprising representatives from both the sides.

Sri Lanka declares state of emergency

6 : Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency for 10 days, to curb heightening violence targeting the island‘s Muslim minority. The development follows days of anti-Muslim attacks in Kandy, located in Sri Lanka‘s Central Province. Sri Lanka is the second country in the region to promulgate a state of emergency this year. In February, Maldivian President declared Emergency Rule for a fortnight.

Sri Lanka celebrates Independence Day

Sri Lanka on 4 February celebrated the 70th Independence Day in a grand ceremony at the Galle Face Green in Colombo.It was on this day in 1948 that country achieved freedom from British rule.Representing Britain’s Queen, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, and the Countess of Wessex participated in the celebrations as Chief Guests.The theme of this year’s ceremony was “One Nation”.
