Senior lawyer Indira Jaising and others filed a petition for live streaming of Court’s proceedings. The Centre in its reply to the petition said if the top court takes a policy decision; it can facilitate the setting up of a separate channel for the Supreme Court. SA celebrates 125 years of Gandhi’s Satyagraha

The screening of the biopic ‘Making of a Mahatma’ marked the opening of a three-day series of events to commemorate the historic incident 125 years ago. On the night of June 7, 1893, Gandhi, a young lawyer then, was thrown off the train’s first class compartment at Pietermaritzburg station. The incident led him to develop his Satyagraha principles of peaceful resistance.

MoU between India & Morocco in legal field

The Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval for signing of the MoU for cooperation in the legal field between India and Morocco. The MoU will allow both the countries to share their experience and expertise in the field of law and legislation. The MoU will give an opportunity to the Lawyers, Law Officers and law students to discuss issues in the field of law and justice.

Indu Malhotra sworn in as SC Judge

Senior lawyer Indu Malhotra was sworn in on 27th April as Supreme Court Judge. It is for the first time that the apex court has two women judges — the other being Justice R. Banumathi. Justice Malhotra is the fifth woman Judge of the top court. Justice Fatima Bibi was the first woman Judge of the Supreme Court. She is the 1st woman lawyer from the Supreme Court bar to be directly elevated.

Foreign law firms can?t practise in India

The Supreme Court ruled that foreign law firms or foreign lawyers cannot practise law in the country either on the litigation or non-litigation side. This means overseas lawyers or firms cannot open offices in the country, appear in courts or before any authority or render other legal services. But overseas lawyers can fly in, fly out for a temporary period to give advice.
