Nepal to shut India’s field office
Nepal has decided to close Indian Embassy’s field office in Biratnagar in the near future as it has “outlived its purpose”. India was permitted to set up a temporary field office in 2008 to issue passes to vehicles for plying on Indian roads in the bordering regions after Koshi floods damaged a 17-km stretch of east-west highway. Nepali had also tried to remove the field office 6 years ago.

NHAI inked pact with Macquarie
National Highways Authority of India has entered into a pact with Macquarie for road projects under highway monetization drive.Funds generated from monetization of highways will be used for infrastructure programmes like Bharatmala, a 7 lakh crore road building imitative. Agreement worth $1.5 billion signed with Macquarie for 1st set of highway projects is one of the highest FDI in Highways

NHAI inks pact for maiden global project
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) inked a pact for its maiden international project, part of the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway. NHAI has signed an agreement for upgradation of Yagyi – Kalewa section in Myanmar to Two-Lane with Earthen Shoulder. The project has been funded by Ministry of External Affairs.

Nitin Gadkari to launch Sukhad Yatra App
Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Shri Nitin Gadkari will launch a mobile App and Toll-free number. Sukhad Yatra mobile application has been prepared by NHAI, to empower the Highway user. A toll-free number, 1033, will enable users to report an emergency condition, or highway-related feedback, across the highway.

China tests first photovoltaic highway
China has successfully tested its 1st photovoltaic highway based on home-grown technology, in it’s eastern Shandong province.The road is constructed using solar panels which have a thin sheet of clear concrete on top of them. Panels will transfer energy to electric vehicles passing on top of them.With this China became the 2nd country to construct a photovoltaic highway.

Corridors to link neighbour countries
Nitin Gadkari has stated that India will link its major highway corridors to international trade points in order to facilitate trade with bordering countries.The linking of highway corridors to International trade points will be carried out for facilitating trade with Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar. About 2000 km of highways will be constructed under this project.

Brics Bank approves $400 million loans
Brics New Development Bank has approved 2 infrastructure & sustainable development projects in India & Russia with loans of $400 mn. The loans will be used to rehabilitate Indira Gandhi canal system in India & to build a toll transport corridor connecting Ufa city centre to M-5 federal highway in Russia. The NDB was set up with an initial authorized capital of $100 billion in 2014.

7-lakh cr to develop 83,000 km Highways
Cabinet has approved the biggest ever highway project to develop and expand approximately 83,000 km of roads at an investment of Rs. 6.9 lakh crore by 2022. Project also includes the new 28,400 km Bharatmala highway program connecting border areas, improving international, port and coastal connectivity. Bharatmala is government’s mega plan for improving connectivity in border and other areas.

IAF Exercise on Lucknow-Agra Expressway
The Lucknow-Agra Expressway will be closed for commuters from 10 am on October 23 till 2 pm on October 24 as the IAF plans to conduct a major touchdown exercise. 20 planes, including the AN-32, will take part in exercise on the highway. The AN-32 are meant for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. It can bring a large amount of relief material and can also help in evacuating people.

India’s first smart and green highway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway will be ready by August this year. It has been built a t a cost of ` 11000 crore. At least 2.5 lakh trees will be on the both sides of the roads with solar panels.

` 40,000 Crore Expressway Project In NE
The first express highway project in the northeast region will be developed along the Brahmaputra river in Assam at an estimated investment of ` 40,000 crore. 1,300 km-long express highway is likely to incur an investment of ` 40,000 crore. The Centre will dredge the Brahmaputra river from Sadia in Upper Assam to increase navigational channels up to Chittagong port in Bangladesh.

Chenani Nashri tunnel inauguration today
India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi-directional highway tunnel is set to be inaugurated today. The Chenani-Nashri tunnel is 9.2 km connecting Chenani in Udhampur district with Nashri in Ramban district. The tunnel is specially significant as it would reduce travel time on National Highway 44 between Jammu and Srinagar by almost 2 hours.

Shortest, widest Highway in the world
27 : Haryana would soon have the widest and shortest National Highway (NH) in the world with 16 lanes in a 3-km stretch. Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the proposed elevated National Highway, costing around ` 700 crore. The three kilometre road with 16 lanes will be built on the Sohna Road in Gurgaon. It will be the shortest and widest National Highway in the world

Highway Construction Rise to 20.4 km/day
The pace of highway construction has gathered momentum in October. Compared to 362 km, 367 km and 315 km respectively in July, Aug & Sept, construction of these roads in October stood at 612 km or 20.4 km/day. The pace, however, is still way lower than what is required to meet the construction target of 41 km/day. The ministry has targeted to build 15,000-km highways in the current fiscal.
