Subsidy on rooftop solar power installations

Himachal Pradesh government has announced a subsidy of 10% or ` 4,000 per Kilowatt, whichever is less, for installation of solar power plants at the rooftop of their buildings. This subsidy would be additional to the subsidy given by Central government. The subsidy amount would be deposited directly to the bank account of the consumer through Himachal Pradesh Energy Development Authority.

Cosmic rays may reach Earth

Eta Carinae is famous for the 19th-century outburst that made it the second brightest star of the sky for a brief time. It is located 7,500 light years away in southern Constellation of Carina.

Conference of States Power Ministers

A conference of Ministers for Power, New & Renewable Energy of States & Union Territories will be held on 3rd July at Shimla. The aim conference is to review various ongoing schemes & deliberate on a host of issues related to the energy sector. The conference would of lines of UDAY performance assessment, shifting to the prepaid system in 3 years & 24X7 Power for All – from 1st April 2019.

24°C as the default setting for ACs

Power Ministry has suggested air-conditioner manufacturers to keep default setting at 24°C in a bid to save energy. It has also suggested that manufacturers should carry out labelling indicating optimum temperature setting for benefit of consumers, both from financial & health point of view. Having a default setting at 24°C will result in savings of 20 billion units of electricity in a year.

Curiousity Rover takes photo of Storm in Mars

NASA’s Curiosity rover has sent pictures of a dust storm in Mars over the last 2 weeks while NASA’s Opportunity rover to suspend operations. The Curiosity rover is powered by Nuclear energy and Opportunity is powered by sunlight are studying Martian soil at Gale Crater. The atmospheric haze blocking sunlight is called “Tau” . The 2 rovers are a part of NASA Science Lab Mission.

Retail inflation jumped further in May

Retail inflation jumped further in May to a four-month high, primarily driven by a surge in energy prices, according to a Reuters. Economists, suggest more policy tightening from the central bank is coming. On June 6, RBI raised the repo rate for the first time since 2014, by 25 basis points to 6.25%, as recent data showed significant increases for both inflation and growth.

EESL, Telangana partner to adopt E-mobility

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) signed up to lease electric vehicles and install EV chargers. The vehicles will be procured by EESL under the Centre’s National E-Mobility Programme. This will not only reduce the costs of hired cars, but also substantially reduce emissions.

Hamburg to host 2018 Global Wind Summit

The first edition of the Global Wind Summit will be held in Hamburg, Germany from September 25-28, 2018. The event will provide a platform for experts from across the globe to discuss innovative and green technologies for harnessing wind energy making. India is the fourth largest country after China, US, and Germany in terms of wind energy installation capacity at around 33 GW.

EESL distributes 30 cr LED bulbs

State-run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) has distributed over 30 crore light emitting diode (LED) bulbs across the country under the ‘Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All’ (UJALA) scheme. The UJALA scheme was launched in January 2015 and is currently the largest LED distribution programme in the world. It is a non-subsidized LED lamp distribution project undertaken by EESL.

World Bank extends $300 million credit

The World Bank Board of Executive Directors approved a $220 million loan and an $80 million (Rs 544 crore) guarantee for the India Energy Efficiency Scale-Up Program. The Program will be implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). This will help scale up the deployment of energy saving measures in residential and public sectors, strengthen EESL’s institutional capacity.

China’s first privately developed rocket

China has launched its first privately developed rocket from a launchpad in northwestern China on 17 May. The launch of the “Chongqing Liangjiang Star” rocket marks the first launch of a non-state Chinese rocket. The rocket was launched by OneSpace Technology and it uses energy-saving technology, such as wireless communications.

Fastest growing black hole discovered

Scientists have discovered the fastest-growing black hole known in the universe. The energy emitted from this newly discovered supermassive black hole, also known as a quasar, was mostly ultraviolet light but also radiated x-rays. The discovery of the new supermassive black hole was confirmed using the spectrograph on the ANU 2.3 metre telescope to split colours into spectral lines.

Government unveiled Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has issued National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy. The objective of the policy is to provide a framework for the promotion of large grid-connected wind-solar PV hybrid system for efficient utilization of transmission infrastructure and land. It also aims at reducing the variability in renewable power generation and achieving better grid stability.

Agreement in field of Renewable Energy

India and Peru have signed an agreement in the field of Renewable Energy at Lima, Peru. The pact was signed in the presence of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and the Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva Arevalo. Vice President’s visit comes at a time when India is celebrating the 55th anniversary of the establishment of Diplomatic Relations with Peru.

Arunachal’s biggest solar plant inagurated

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated the state’s biggest solar power plant at Energy Awareness Park. The plant, with a capacity of one megawatt, was commissioned on April 1 at an estimated investment of Rs 8.50 crore. With the commissioning of the solar plant, import of energy from other states will reduce considerably.

India & Japan to work together

India and Japan have agreed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in energy development space as well as contribute to worldwide energy security and solutions to climate change issues. Both countries agreed to initiate the discussion towards development of Electric Vehicles. They will work together in promoting well-functioning energy markets.

Diu Smart City runs 100% on renewable energy

The Diu Smart City has become the first city in India that runs on 100 percent renewable energy during the daytime.The city has developed a 9-MW solar park, besides installing solar panels on the rooftops on 79 government buildings, generating 1.3 MW annually. Diu also offers its residents a subsidy of ` 10,000-50,000 for installing 1-5-KW rooftop solar panels.

India, US set up task force on natural gas

India &US have decided to set up a joint task force on natural gas that is aimed at increasing share of gas in India’s primary energy mix.Task force provides a team of US & Indian industry experts with a mandate to propose, develop, & convey innovative policy recommendations to Govt of India. The work of task force is expected to advance strategic & economic interests of both the countries

India, Sweden to cooperate in Smart Cities

India & Sweden have agreed to deepen their cooperation in Smart Cities initiative, transport & energy sectors.The 2 countries will exchange knowledge & explore cooperation on smart cities, including transit-oriented urban development, air pollution control & waste management. Both sides will also exchange know-how & explore cooperation in areas of electro-mobility as well as renewable fuels

World Bank Approves $55mn for Bangladesh Project

The World Bank has approved $55mn to expand the use of clean renewable energy in rural areas of Bangladesh where grid electricity cannot reach easily. The additional financing to the Second Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Development (RERED II) Project will install 1,000 solar irrigation pumps, 30 solar mini-grids and about 4mn improved cooking stoves in rural areas. PM to inaugurate International Energy Forum

India will host the 16th International Energy Forum (IEF) Ministerial Meeting from 10-12th April 2018 in New Delhi.The biennial IEF Ministerial Meetings are the world’s largest gathering of Energy Ministers who engage in a dialogue on global energy issues. The IEF is an inter-governmental arrangement set up in 1991, based in Riyadh. There are 72 member countries of IEF, including India.

NMHEP project’s foundation stone laid

Minister of State (IC) for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Government of India, laid the foundation stone of the 60 MW Naitwar Mori Hydro Electric Project (NMHEP) in Uttarkashi.NMHEP is located on the river Tons – a tributary of the Yamuna, in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The project was allocated to SJVN Ltd by the Government of Uttarakhand.

India received 1st LNG shipment from US

The first long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) US cargo from the Houston-based Cheniere Energy Inc. arrived at the Dabhol LNG terminal in Maharashtra. India is the world‘s fourth-largest LNG importer. The first crude oil shipment from the US to India arrived in October 2017 in Odisha.

India ranks 78th on energy transition index

India has been ranked at 78th among 114 countries on the World Economic Forum‘s (WEF) energy transition index. The index listed countries based on their ability to balance energy security, environmental sustainability and affordability. The overall list was topped by Sweden, followed by Norway at the 2nd position and Switzerland at the 3rd rank.

India’s largest wind turbine generator

Renewable solution provider Suzlon Group announced the installation and commissioning of its new product ‘S128’ claiming it to be the largest wind turbine generator in India. The first prototype of S128 has been commissioned at the Sanganeri site in Tamil Nadu. This has the country‘s largest single rotor blade measuring 63 metres and reduced levelised cost of energy.

$930 Million Solar Venture in India

A Chinese energy conglomerate and SoftBank Group Corp. signed a $930 million agreement to produce and sell solar equipments in India.Golden Concord Group Ltd. will invest in a 40% stake in the joint venture, with Japan’s SoftBank taking the rest. The project will have a capacity of 4 GW and be involved in producing and selling solar ingots, silicon wafers, batteries and components.
