Peru declares 60-day state of emergency

Peru declared a 60-day state of emergency on its Colombian border to ensure security from the menace of drug trafficking in a region. The state of emergency has been declared in Peru’s Amazonian province of Putumayo, which is separated from Colombia by the river of the same name. The president informed the first patrol was carried out by the Peru police and armed forces.

Section 144 to be used in animal emergencies

The National Board of Wildlife has recommended that states use Section 144, which prohibits the assembly of four or more people, during wildlife emergencies. The provision will be used to “prevent people from gathering in large numbers, which aggravates wildlife emergency situations”. The Centre is expected to issue advisories to the state governments regarding the recommendation.

Rupee among top 10 EM currencies

The rupee has been ranked as one of the 10 best-performing currencies, beating rivals like Real and Rand ever since the NDA government came into power in May 2014. Although all emerging market currencies have lost value to the dollar, rupee’s slide is relatively controlled compared with peers. In the 4 year period, the dollar index gained 17% compared with 14.2% loss in the rupee’s value.

Flood preparedness exercise in UP

The National Disaster Management Authority conducted a table-top exercise at the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The exercise was held in the run-up to a State-level mock exercise on flood preparedness to be held in 23 flood-prone districts of Uttar Pradesh tomorrow. The exercise is being held in collaboration with State Disaster Management Authority.

HDFC bank to offer Digital Loans

HDFC Bank has launched its Digital Loans against Mutual Funds in partnership with transfer agent CAM. Customers will be able to leverage their mutual fund portfolio to avail funds for any emergencies without liquidating their investments. The ticket size of the loans will range from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1 crore at an interest rate of 10.5 -11%.

1st drone-carried meteorological data monitor

China has successfully tested its first drone-carried meteorological data monitor to undertake atmospheric observations. Dropsonde also known as meteorological data monitor will gather data such as temperature, humidity, and wind direction and transmit them to ground receiving devices in real time. Dropsondes can be widely used in meteorological emergency, disaster & ecological monitoring.

Railways to use AI to control air circulation

For the first time, the Railways will use artificial intelligence to control air circulation, to issue emergency alerts and also for supervision and maintenance work in a 10.28-km-long tunnel in Imphal. It will alert the passenger in case of fire and help us in quick evacuation in case of an issue. This system will also be used in the Hyderabad, Mumbai and Ahmedabad metros.

The RAT was first detected by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, CERT-In, on various computers in 2017. The ‘RAT’ in its name stands for Remote Access Trojan, which is a program capable of being controlled remotely. It is designed to infiltrate computers and steal the data of users.

First-ever Mock Exercise on Bio-Disasters

National Disaster Management Authority conducted its first-ever Mock Exercise on Bio-Disasters at Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Airport in Patna.The exercise aimed at enhancing the preparedness of Airport Emergency Handlers to respond to CBRN emergencies at the airports. NDMA jointly with NDRF also conducted its first-ever full-scale Biological Management Emergency Exercise.

Noted journalist S Nihal Singh passed away

17 : Noted journalist and former Chief Editor of The Statesman and The Indian Express, Surendra Nihal Singh passed away on 16th April.He was the founding editor of The Indian Post in 1987. He was awarded the prestigious International Editor of the Year Award in New York for opposing the Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
