Varanasi to host Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2019

The next Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held in the holy city of Varanasi in January 2019. The theme of the event, which is being organised in PM Modi’s parliamentary constituency, will be the ‘Role of Indian Diaspora in building a New India’. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is observed biennially on 9 January to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community towards development of India.

Mumbai costlier than Washington and Melbourne

According to a Mercer survey, Mumbai is the most expensive city in India to live in for expatriates as compared to Washington and Melbourne. Hong Kong is ranked as the world’s costliest city to live in for expatriates, followed by Tokyo, Zurich, Singapore, and Seoul. Bengaluru, which has a high population of expatriates is getting more reasonable on cost of living.

Surat Selected for best smart city award

Surat city has been awarded best city award under the Smart City Mission’s award for implementation of projects in urban environment, transport and mobility and sustainable integrated development. Bhopal and Ahmedabad have been selected as joint winners under innovative idea award category. The Ministry of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs issued the award.

Delhi accepted full statehood proposal

Delhi Vidhan Sabha accepted the resolution on full statehood to the city. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said that the capital has been deprived of its basic rights unlike other states, which has affected the development of the city. Kejriwal promised that if Delhi gets statehood then every family will get one home, people will have jobs.

12,000-yr-old rock painting found in China

Archaeologists have confirmed that a rock painting discovered in the Lesser Khingan Mountains in China’s Heilongjiang province dates back 12,000 years. Several images painted with ochre were discovered on a rock in the city of Heihe. Preliminary studies showed that it was a scene of humans hunting, reports Xinhua news agency.

Fuego volcano erupted

Guatemala’s Fuego volcano erupted by shooting a dense cloud of ash into the sky. The death toll in the eruption rose to 62 as rescue workers recovered more bodies from devastated villages. Fuego has been erupting since 2002, and was continuously active in 2017. Guatemala, a Central American country, is home to volcanoes, rainforests and ancient Mayan sites. Its capital is Guatemala City.

Water crises in Shimla

Himachal Pradesh’s CM Jai Ram Thakur said the tourist season and the increasing population led to water scarcity in Shimla. Water available in traditional sources has gone down this year, he added. Shimla is facing acute water shortage for over 10 days, prompting residents to request tourists to not visit the city.

Paraguay officially moves embassy to Jerusalem

Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes has inaugurated his country’s Israel embassy in Jerusalem. Paraguay is now the third country to move its embassy to Jerusalem, following the United States and Guatemala. Israel considers the entire city of Jerusalem to be its capital, while the Palestinians see east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Frog Species found in Karnataka

The latest addition to India’s frog fauna is the narrow-mouthed frog named Microhyla kodial found in Mangaluru. The species has been named after the city of Mangaluru which is called kodial in the Konkani language. The greyish-brown frog is just 2 cm long.

Indore is the cleanest city in India

According to Swachh Survekshan 2018 survey, Indore has bagged the title of the cleanest city in India, followed by Bhopal & Chandigarh. Indore was the cleanest city last year as well but that survey was conducted only for around 430 cities. This time it was conducted for around 4200 cities. Jharkhand was adjudged the best-performing state in the survey followed by Maharashtra & Chhattisgarh.

Guatemala opened its embassy in Jerusalem

Guatemala has opened its embassy in Jerusalem, following in the footsteps of the United States, which recently inaugurated its embassy in the city. Guatemala, the second country to recognise Israel as a state in 1948, has had a long history of military cooperation with Israel. All embassies to Israel were situated in the commercial capital Tel Aviv, before US and Guatemalan embassies moved.

Mangaluru is the best in waste management

The Union government has selected Mangaluru as “India’s best city in solid waste management”. It was selected under the categories of cities having a population between three lakh and 10 lakh under Swachhata Survekshan 2018. The survey by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs assessed 4,203 urban local bodies under the aegis of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban).

Sensitization Meeting of Stakeholders held

The ‘first sensitization meeting of stakeholders to make Delhi a model Accessible city’ was held in the national capital on May 7. The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities took this initiative to coordinate the meeting of all key stakeholders, sensitize them about the legal mandates. Delhi being the capital city of the country is proposed to be selected for this drive.

Apex Conference for the CEOs of Smart Cities

Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs, Hardeep Puri, inaugurated the ‘First Apex Conference for the CEOs of Smart Cities ‘in Bhopal on 8th May. The two-day conference is being organised for providing a platform for cross-learning and knowledge sharing among the Smart City CEOs. Bengaluru is highest paying city for talent

With an average annual CTC for talent across all levels and functions standing at about Rs 11 lakh, Bengaluru topped the list of salary trends this year.Pune stands second at around Rs 10 lakh, followed by NCR and Mumbai with an average annual CTC of a little under Rs 10 lakh and around Rs 9 lakh, respectively. India, Zambia ink 4 agreements

India and Zambia signed 4 agreements after the delegation-level talks held in the capital city of Lusaka.The 2 agreements were signed in the areas of avoidance of double taxation & visa exemption on diplomatic and official passports. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation in partnership with civil society groups launched 6th edition of Heat Action Plan to protect city dwellers from scorching temperatures.The plan has an early warning system used during heat waves and a robust public education campaign about how to avoid harm from excessive heat.Ahmedabad was the first city to prepare and implement heat action plan.

Hyderabad has been ranked the top city in the short-term Momentum Ranking of JLL’s annual ‘Global City Momentum Index’.The report identifies urban economies and real estate markets which are currently undergoing the most rapid growth. The report ranked Bengaluru, Pune, Kolkata and Delhi in top 10 cities.

Cabinet approved Nutrient Based Subsidy

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the continuation of Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) and City Compost Scheme beyond 12th Five Year plan till 2019-20. Government is making available fertilizers, namely Urea and 21 grades of P&K fertilizers to farmers at subsidized prices through fertilizer manufacturers. The subsidy on P&K fertilizers is being governed by NBS Scheme.

Vienna is world?s most liveable city

Austria‘s capital Vienna once again defended its position as the city offering the best quality of life in the world in an annual survey from consulting firm Mercer. Vienna is followed by Switzerland‘s Zurich and then New Zealand‘s Auckland and Germany‘s Munich in joint third. The criteria to rank the cities were political stability, health care, education, crime, recreation and transport.

Pune tops in improved quality governance

Pune has emerged as the top city to show improvement in the quality of governance according to a survey. The other cities that came in the top five include Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram, Bhubaneshwar and Surat. Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy conducted the survey. The worst performers for this year were Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Patna and Chennai.

Team India, Proteas donate ` 5.5L

Fliers to Bengaluru can soon use ‘heli taxi’

Thumby Aviation, a heli taxi operator, will start flights next week to ferry air passengers from Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to Electronics City, where companies such as Infosys and Wipro are based.Currently, it takes more than an hour-and-half to reach Electronics City. The heli taxi service will take just 15 minutes.

Telangana, Taiwan Sign MoU

The Telangana Government signed an MOU with Taoyuan City of Taiwan for better technology partnership in the state.The agreement was signed after the World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) 2018 in Hyderabad. IT Minister K T Rama Rao and principal secretary Jayesh Ranjan signed the agreement with Robert Huang, Director of the Board of Taiwan company at World IT Congress 2018.

World’s Tallest Hotel ‘Gevora’ Opens In Dubai

The Gevora Hotel in Dubai, developed by the Al Attar Group has now become the “world’s tallest hotel”.It stands 356 metres and 53 centimetres tall. It is one metre taller than the previous holder of the title, the JW Marriott Marquis, in the same city. The title has been confirmed by Guinness Book of World Records.

Hyderabad declared open defecation free

5 : Greater Hyderabad was declared an open defecation free ODF city by the Centre.The Swachh Bharat Mission Directorate of the Ministry of Urban Development has also declared six other ULBs — GWMC, Miryalguda, Jangoan, Bellampally, Mancherial and Sadashivpet, as ODF.The Centre issues Swachh certificates to the cities based on recommendations by a third party — Quality Council of India.

Kolkata bans public display of weapons

The Kolkata Police has come out with a notification banning public display of weapons in the city for the whole of 2018.
The order is effective from January 2. The notification specifies certain exemptions, but religious processions are curiously not among them.The order will not extend to persons like the President of India, governors of state and lt-governors or commissioners.

Henrietta Fore appointed to head UNICEF

UN has appointed Henrietta Fore, a former head of the USAID as the new Executive Director of United Nations Childrens’ Fund. Henrietta Fore was the first woman to be appointed Administrator of the US Agency for International Development. UNICEF is a program headquartered in New York City that provides humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.

The U.N. General Assembly denounced President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.The resolution reaffirmed what has been the United Nations’ stand on the divided holy city since 1967- that Jerusalem’s final status must be decided in direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Hyderabad has launched a drive to turn the city into “Beggar Free” city.The Hyderabad Prison Department has recently begun 2 Beggar homes – one in Chanchalguda jail for male beggars & another, Challapalli jail for female beggars.The homes will be provided with all the necessary facilities, over 287 male beggars and around 150 female beggars have already set up in the homes.

Swaraj attended SCO summit in Russia

Suu Kyi stripped of Oxford Award

29 : Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been stripped of the Freedom of Oxford award. It is done due to her “inaction” in handling the raging Rohingya refugee crisis and turning a “blind eye to violence” in the country that forced over 600,000 people to flee to Bangladesh. Oxford City Council in London voted unanimously to permanently remove the honour given to her in 1997.

Bengaluru outranks San Francisco

Bengaluru has been adjudged as the best city among 45 cities for the confidence of its businesses in their ability to go digital. The other two cities followed by it are Mumbai and New Delhi. The survey was conducted by Economist Intelligence Unit(EIU). EIU conducted this survey in partnership with telecommunications firm Telstra Corp.

The top tourist destinations in 2017

Hong Kong remains the world’s most visited city by international travellers in spite of strained relations with neighbouring China. In a report on the top 100 city destinations that highlights the growth in Asian tourism, market research firm Euromonitor International said 25.7 million arrivals are expected in Hong Kong in 2017. Other countries followed by Hong Kong are Bangkok and London.

Ravinder Singh Bhalla has become the first ever Sikh mayor of New Jersey’s Hoboken city. He is the first Sikh to hold elected office in New Jersey. Bhalla, who is better known as Ravi Bhalla, graduated from UC Berkley and did his masters degree from London School of Economics and received a law degree from Tulane University.

PM Modi flagged off Bandhan Express

‘Bandhan Express’ a passenger train between Kolkata and Bangladesh’s southwestern industrial city of Khulna was inaugurated on November 9, 2017. It is a fully air-conditioned passenger train and will run every Thursday from both Kolkata and Khulna. It is the second Indo-Bangla train service after the Maitree Express, which runs between Dhaka and Kolkata.

Chennai in UNESCO’s Creative cities list

64 cities from 44 countries have been designated as UNESCO Creative Cities by Director-General, Irina Bokova. Chennai is the third Indian city on the list of UNESCO Creative Cities list after Jaipur and Varanasi. Chennai has been for contribution in music. After this, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network now counts a total of 180 cities in 72 countries.

Kolkata food items have high lead levels

According to Geological Survey of India, Raw food items sold in Kolkata city markets have Lead concentration far above the permissible limit. High concentration of Lead can permanently damage key human organs. Samples of raw food items collected from 12 markets in the city showed a mean Lead (Pb) concentration between 3.78 and 43.35 mg/kg (average 23.56 mg/kg).

Diwali celebrated in India

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath landed in Ayodhya, which celebrated it’s largest Diwali celebrations ‘deepotsav’ ever. The city aims to enter Guinness World Records as more than 2000 school and college kids light 2 lakh diyas (earthen lamps) on the eve of Diwali. Adityanath performed aarti on the banks of Saryu river in Ayodhya with Governor Ram Naik, Deputy CM KP Maurya.

Chennai Metro introduced cycle scheme

Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) has introduced a free bicycle ride scheme for its customers. To implement this scheme, CMRL has tied up with a private agency to provide 100-hours of bicycle ride free of cost every month. This scheme has been introduced to promote eco-friendly travel in the city. Commuters in Chennai can avail the benefit of this scheme at four metro stations.

Visa ties up with Andhra Pradesh

11 : Andhra Pradesh Government and international digital payments company Visa, announced a tie up for Visakahpatnam Digital Dhan Sankalp Project. The project is an initiative to develop Visakhapatnam into India’s first ‘less cash’ city. In collaboration with Visa, efforts will be made to enable digital payments to educational institutions, small and micro merchants and street market vendors.

Benghazi reopens after three-year

Benghazi’s commercial port officially reopened after a 3 year closure due to fighting between rival factions in the east Libyan city. Commercial operations at the port had ended in 2014 when armed movements, including the Islamic State terror group, occupied the North African country’s 2nd city. The port does not export oil, but imports gas & some petroleum products as well as general cargo.

India exempts import duty on goods

Central govt has exempted import duty on sports items and a wide range of goods for the upcoming Under-17 football World Cup to be held in India. All sports goods, sports equipment and sports requisites, fitness equipment, team uniform/clothing & consumables will be exempted from the customs duty. The first FIFA event to be held in India will have 52 matches spread over six cities.

China opens dual-use highway

China has opened a strategic highway in Tibet to Nepal border which could be used for civilian & defense purposes. The highway will shorten the journey from an hour to 30 mins b/w dual-use civil & military airport & Tibet’s 2nd-largest city. The highway will enable China to forge a route into South Asia in both economic & defense terms.

Least and Most Stressful Cities Ranking

According to 2017 Global Least & Most Stressful Cities Ranking, Stuttgart is the least stressed out city across the globe, with 4 of top 10 relaxing cities situated in Germany. Luxembourg stood at 2nd spot while Hanover was at 3rd place in the ranking. Of the 150 cities ranked, Delhi ranked 142, while Bengaluru stood at 130 and Mumbai at 138. The most stressed city in the list is Baghdad.

Foundation for smart city project

Venkaiah Naidu laid the foundation stone of Greenfield Smart City at Ranchi in Jharkhand. The Greenfield Smart City will cost Rs. 10,000 crore and will also have 16,000 residential flats for 70,000 residents. The smart city will have modern transport system, world class education hub, 24 hours water and electricity, wi-fi, public toilets at every 200 meters and will be carbon free zone.

Mother Teresa a patron saint of Calcutta

The Vatican has declared Mother Teresa a patron saint of the Archdiocese of Calcutta at a Mass in the city where she dedicated her life to the poorest of the poor. The honor came 16 months after Pope Francis declared Mother Teresa a saint. Mother Teresa’s name will be mentioned whenever people under the archdiocese pray or a Mass is held.

India’s first World Heritage City

Gujarat’s commercial capital Ahmedabad was formally accorded the status of India’s first World Heritage City by UNESCO. UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova handed over the certificate declaring Ahmedabad as a ‘World Heritage City’ to Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. In July, the UNESCO had inscribed Ahmedabad as India’s first World Heritage City at a meeting held in Poland.

Host city logo for Kochi

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the host city logo for Kochi, one of the venues of Fifa Under-17 World Cup. The logo represents and reflects Kochi’s identity and will be a valuable tool in linking the local community in a global World Cup. The host city logo will allow all football fans in Kochi to have a local flavour and will be critical in the promotion of the tournament.

Google to launch Android O

Google will be unveiling latest Android operating system, Android O through a live streaming event from New York City. Google hasn’t officially disclosed what the “O” in “Android O” stands for, while many believe it could be Oreo. Android O will be Google’s Android version 8.0 after Android Nougat. Android O is currently on its fourth developer preview, having originally launched in March.

World’s most liveable city

Melbourne has been declared the most liveable city in the world for 7th year running by Economist’s annual global liveability survey. Melbourne scored 97.5 out of 100, pipping Vienna for the top spot, after scoring strong marks for healthcare, education & infrastructure. Melbourne’s relatively low crime rate was as one of the main reasons it outranked other high-performing cities.

Bengaluru ranks 40

According to a report by Dell, Bengaluru ranks at the 40th spot among the top 50 global cities that foster high-potential women entrepreneurs. The only other Indian city in the top 50 tally is Delhi at the 49th spot. New York ranked topped the list, followed by Bay Area, London, Boston and Stockholm. Globally, women’s entrepreneurship rates are growing more than 10 per cent each year

Martial law extended in Mindanao

Legislators in the Philippines have voted overwhelmingly to extend martial law to deal with an Islamist insurgency in the restive island of Mindanao. Militants linked to so-called Islamic State have been occupying parts of Marawi, a city in the south, since May. Martial law allows the use of the military to enforce law and the detention of people without charge for long periods.

FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017

Kolkata will play host to the proverbial ‘Group of Death’ in the tournament, which begins in October this year. Group F, which will be played in the ‘City of Joy’, comprises of teams like England, Mexico, Chile and Iraq. India’s first World Heritage City

Ahmedabad has been declared as a World Heritage City at the 41st session of UNESCO’s world heritage committee meet in Karkow in Poland. It is the first time an Indian city was declared a world heritage property. With this title, Ahmedabad has joined Paris, Vienna, Cairo, Brussels, Rome & Edinburgh. Nomination of Ahmedabad was supported by about 20 countries including Peru, Cuba and others.

China’s President Xi Jinping has inaugurated the new Hong Kong administration led by Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the first woman to lead the city. The event coincided with the 20th anniversary of the handover of the city’s sovereignty from Britain to China. Carrie Lam is the 4th Chief Executive of Hong Kong.

AUSINDEX-17 Bilateral Maritime Exercise

Indian warships have reached Australia’s port city of Freemantle to take part in a week-long naval exercise off the Western Australian coast. Exercise Australia-India (AUSINDEX) was first conducted off the East Coast of India in September 2015. The exercise exercise aims to enhance interoperability and professional interaction between two navies. The exercise will be held from June 17-19.

Hanover prepares mass evacuation

7 : In Germany, more than 50,000 people have been ordered to leave their homes in the city of Hanover ahead of a a large-scale operation to defuse unexploded bombs dating back to World War II. 13 unexploded ordnances from the 1940s, found at a construction site, are expected to be removed from the northwestern city today. The evacuation involves three heavily-populated areas of Hanover.

GIC Re sets up base in GIFT City

General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) has become the first re-insurer to open an office at India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). GIC provides reinsurance support to life and non-life insurers in India and abroad. GIC Re’s foreign and domestic premium composition now stands at 45:55.

Cultural programme held at Kathmandu

Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri inaugurated cultural programme “Colours of the Northern and Southern States of India” at Kathmandu on April 12. The two day event is organised by Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), Embassy of India on the occasion of Baisakhi and Nepali New Year 2074.

First bio-gas bus in Kolkata

4 : A city based company has claimed to have launched the first bio-gas fuelled bus in Kolkata keeping a flat fare of just ` 1. All buses will have a flat fare of Re 1 irrespective of the distance, even in excess of 40 km. The first bus will run a distance of 17 km between Ultadanga and Garia. The bus service will be run by Phoenix India.

J&K govt approves smart city proposals

A committee of the Jammu and Kashmir government has approved the Smart City Proposals for the twin cities of Jammu and Srinagar for submission to the Centre. Considering the vulnerability of the cities to multiple hazards, the calamities like floods and earthquakes, risk preparedness and risk response have received special focus in the SCPs’ proposal.

India’s first vertical garden

Emulating China and Italy’s vertical forests, Bengaluru got its first vertical garden, which it hopes will help in curbing pollution and in beautifying the city. An NGO, installed the first vertical garden in the city on one of the pillars of the Hosur Road flyover. An automated drip irrigation system has been installed that will water these saplings every day.

Science Cities Set Up by Min. of Culture

The following Science Cities have been set up by Ministry of Culture through National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), an Autonomous Organisation under the Ministry of Culture- (i) Science City, Kolkata (ii) Regional Science City, Lucknow The Science Cities Scheme provides for setting up of Science Cities in all the states of the country subject to availability of funds for this purpose.

Hyderabad best city in living standards

Hyderabad for the 3rd year in a row has emerged as the best city in terms of living standards among Indian cities. Vienna has been ranked at the top globally in a list by consultancy firm Mercer. The Mercer Quality of Living Survey ranks 221 cities from Vienna to Baghdad on quality of life. The National Capital for the straight year hit the lowest score among Indian cities.

Worst polluted city

WHO announces that New Delhi is no longer the worst polluted city in the world in terms of air quality. The dirtiest air is now recorded at Zabol in Iran.

London has leap-frogged Bangkok and Singapore to be named the second-most-visited city in the world, according to research by travel analysis Euromonito.

Seoul succeeds in WWF’s Earth Hour City Challenge 2015

Seoul city, the capital and largest metropolis of South Korea was awarded the title of Global Earth hour Capital 2015 after it won the Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC) of World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The challenge saw the participation of 163 cities from 16 countries. The award ceremony was held in Seoul, South Korea. The city of Balikpapan, Indonesia was recognized as the Most Loveable City for 2015 and Thane city was named as the National Earth Hour Capital 2015 of India.
