RBI has approved the appointment of Girish Chandra Chaturvedi as non-executive (part-time) Chairman of the ICICI bank till June 30, 2021. Girish Chandra Chaturvedi was previously the petroleum secretary. ICICI Bank announced that Kochhar has decided to go on leave till the completion of an external inquiry into the matter of lending loan to Videocon group.

Reliance Industries Ltd Chairman Mukesh Ambani has surpassed Alibaba Group’s Jack Ma to become Asia’s richest person. According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Ambani’s wealth rose to $44.3 billion while Jack Ma’s wealth stood at $44 billion. He is the 18th wealthiest person in the world, according to Forbes. Reliance is India’s largest payer of GST and Income Tax in the private sector.

Forbes released its 4th annual list of US’ Richest Self-Made Women. Diane Hendricks, co-founder and chairman of ABC Supply ranks 1st with a net w rth of $4.9 billion. Indian-origin tech executives Jayshree Ullal and Neerja Sethi were also on the list with $1.3 bn and $1 bn respectively. TV star and entrepreneur Kylie Jenner is the youngest to be featured in the list.

Panel for automatic suspension in RS

The rules review committee set up by Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu has submitted its interim report. It made two key recommendations: automatic suspension of wilful offenders and changing question-hour timing. The two-member committee is headed by the former secretary general of Rajya Sabha V.K. Agnihotri. The report has to be approved by the Rules Committee of the Upper House.

Ambani gets another 5 years as chairman

Shareholders of Reliance Industries have approved giving Mukesh Ambani another five years as the chairman and managing director of the company. Ambani has been on the board of RIL since 1977 and was elevated as chairman of the company after the death of his father Dhirubhai Ambani in July 2002. Reliance Industries is India’s second most valued firm after Tata Consultancy Services.

T.K Chand gets knowledge excellence award

SAIL appointed new CMD

Saraswati Prasad has been appointed as the new CMD of the Steel Authority of India. Saraswati Prasad has also taken over the additional charge of the post of managing director and chairman of SAIL on July 1, 2018. The appointment was made after the retirement of former CMD P.K. Singh.

1st meeting of Cauvery Water Management Board

The first meeting of the Cauvery Water Management Board will be held in New Delhi to resolve the dispute among southern states. The meeting of the 9-member board will be chaired by the Central Water Commission Chairman S Masood Hussain. The meeting will discuss the issues including water storage in Cauvery basin reservoirs with the judgement of the Supreme Court in this regard.

ICICI Bank has appointed former bureaucrat Girish Chandra Chaturvedi as its non-executive part-time chairman. Chaturvedi is a 1977-batch IAS officer, who retired as the Oil Secretary in January 2013. The term of M K Sharma, the current chairman of ICICI Bank, ends on June 30.

S. Ramesh appointed as Chairman of CBIC

S Ramesh has been appointed as Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), the apex policy-making body for indirect taxes. Ramesh, an officer of the Indian Revenue Service had mandated with the responsibility of implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The CBIC, which works under the Finance Ministry, is headed by a Chairman and can has 6 members.

Sunil Mittal becomes honorary chairman of ICC

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder & Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, will step down as the Chairman of International Chamber of Commerce. He will now function as the Honorary Chairman of ICC commencing July 1, 2018. He will be succeeded by Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever, as ICC Chairman. Mittal was only the 3rd Indian to have been appointed the chairman of the ICC since it was constituted in 1919.

Northeast India’s first small bank opened

Northeast India’s first small bank, North East Small Finance bank (NESFB) started its services. Rashtriya Gramin Vikas Nidhi (North East) Microfinance Limited received the Small Finance Bank License from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on March 31, 2017. Tata Trust chairman Ratan Tata and Assam’s finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the first 28 branches of the bank.

Fed Reserve raises rates

15 : In raising its benchmark overnight lending rate a quarter of a percentage point to a range of 1.75% to 2%, the Fed Reserve of US marked a milestone in the U.S. central bank’s shift in monetary policy. After the rate-setting, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said that the US economy is doing very well. The rate hike marks a shift in US policies used to battle the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

Saxena appointed acting UPSC chief

UPSC member Arvind Saxena has been appointed as the acting Chairman of the commission from June 20. Saxena, a 1978-batch Indian Postal Service officer, will take over the charge from incumbent Vinay Mittal who completes his term at the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on June 19. Saxena joined the UPSC in May, 2015 after he completed his stint in the Aviation Research Centre (ARC).

Press Council of India reconstituted

The government has reconstituted the Press Council of India for a three-year term. According to the Press Council Act, the council shall consist of a chairman and 28 other members. The Press Council of India is a statutory body with a mandate to act as a watchdog to oversee the conduct of the print media. It was reconstituted for 3 years in October 2014 and its term ended in October 2017.

MD Mallya appointed as independent director

ICICI Bank has appointed MD Mallya as an additional independent director on the board. Mallya in the past has served as the managing director & chairman of Bank of Baroda. Mallya’s tenure is for a period of 5 years, it is subjected to the approval of shareholders. Mallya was also engaged extensively with the government as Indian Banks’ Association chairman.

UP-Mumbai freight corridor open from August

The first phase of India’s longest freight corridor connecting Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai is set to be inaugurated on August 15, 2018. This was disclosed by the chairman of the Railway Board Ashwani Lohani, who inspected the 190km-long Ateli-Phulera section of the dedicated railway freight corridor between Dadri in UP and Mumbai. It is part of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.

Deliberations on Punchhi commission report

Standing committee of the Inter-State Council has completed deliberations on Punchhi Commission’s recommendations. Punchhi Commission deals with the responsibility and jurisdiction of the Centre during major outbreaks of communal and caste violence. Government had constituted this Commission on Centre-State Relations under the Chairmanship of former CJI Madan Mohan Punchhi on April 27, 2007.

Sushil Chandra gets another one-year extension

Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) chairman Sushil Chandra has got a one-year extension up to May 31, 2019. He took over as chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) in 2016. This is the second extension that he has got. CBDT has six members, apart from the chairman, and is responsible for framing policy related to direct taxes and the Income Tax Department.

Chandramauli appointed as Chairman of PCI

Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad, who was the former Supreme Court Judge has been appointed as the Chairman of the Press Council of India (PCI) for the second time. The decision was taken by a committee of three members, headed by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. Justice Prasad had taken over from Justice Markanday Katju in November, 2014.

India to achieve 9% growth rate by 2022

NITI Aayog vice-chairman Rajiv Kumar has said that Indian economy will achieve 9% growth rate on sustained basis by 2022. Reforms like GST, Demonetisation and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code will help in achieving this ambitious target of 9%. He said that the Indian economy grew by 6.6% in 2017-18 and expected to grow at 7.5% this fiscal.

NABARD sanctions Solar street lighting system

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development has sanctioned LED Solar Street Lighting system for Arunachal Pradesh under its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund with a grant of Rs 87.83 lakh. It would be implemented in 4 districts of the state Tirap, Longding, Namsai & Tawang. The scheme was launched by Chief Minister Pema Khandu in presence of NABARD Chairman Harsh Kumar Bhanwala.

Anil Kumar Jha appointed CMD of Coal India Ltd

Anil Kumar Jha has been appointed as the Chairman-Cum-Managing director (CMD) of Coal India Limited. Anil Kumar is at present the CMD of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. Anil Kumar will replace acting chairman Suresh Kumar, an IAS officer, who has been holding the post of additional secretary at the ministry of coal. Yudhvir Malik got extra charge of NHAI chief

Yudhvir Singh Malik, the Secretary of Ministry of Road, Transport, and Highways, has been given additional charge of the post of NHAI chairman.Deepak Kumar, the chairman of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), was sent back to his cadre state Bihar before completion of his tenure. Kumar, a 1984 IAS officer of Bihar cadre, had taken over as the NHAI chief on June 28 last year.

SEBI asks listed firms to split CMD post

SEBI has asked listed companies to split the post of Chairman and Managing Director by April 2020. SEBI has also made it compulsory for them to have six independent directors on board, including a women director. The changes, which were first recommended by Kotak Bank chief Uday Kotak-led committee on corporate governance in 2017, have now been accepted and notified by SEBI.

Subhash Chandra appointed as IRDAI Chairman

Former IAS Officer Subhash Chandra Khuntia was appointed as the new Chairman of Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDAI) for three-years. Khuntia will succeed T S Vijayan, who completed his five-year term in February. His appointment was approved by Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). NITI Aayog VC: India to grow at 7.5%

20 : Opposition parties led by Congress MP Ghulam Nabi Azad have submitted an impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra to Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu. Around 60 opposition leaders signed the motion, while TMC and DMK MPs refrained from it. The move comes after CJI-led Supreme Court bench dismissed petitions seeking a probe into Judge BH Loya’s death.

Khagen Das, CPI(M) veteran and chairman of the Left Front Committee of Tripura, died in Kolkata on Sunday.Mr. Das, 81, died within minutes of his admission to a hospital for chest pain.He was in Kolkata to attend the party’s central committee meeting. IDFC Bank will merge with Warburg Pincus-backed Capital First in an all-share deal.V Vaidyanathan, the current chairman of Capital First, will become the MD and CEO of the merged entity, succeeding Rajiv Lall. Post-merger, the combined entity of IDFC Bank and Capital First will have assets under management of Rs 880 billion and will serve more than five million customers.

Dhingra to head new SIT on 1984 riots

Supreme Court appointed the former Delhi High Court judge, Justice S.N. Dhingra, as chairman of its Special Investigation Team (SIT), to further investigate 186 cases in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.The court decided to independently investigate these cases. The three-member SIT would also have Abhishek Dular, a 2006 IPS batch officer, and Rajdeep Singh, a retired IPS officer.

Chhattisgarh gets new chief secretary

Senior IAS officer Ajay Singh, of 1983 batch, has been appointed Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh on Thursday, replacing Vivek Dhand.Mr. Dhand, of 1981 batch, was Chief Secretary for four years and was to retire in March. He was named the chairman of the state’s Real Estate Regulatory Authority but opted for voluntary retirement.

Telangana to have minorities commission

Telangana government formed Minorities Commission with Mohammed Qamaruddin as its Chairman.Rajarapu Pratap was made Vice Chairman of Telangana Minorities Commission. The members of this commission are Mohammed Arshad Ali Khan, Vidya Sravanti, Gusty Noria, Bommala Kattaiah and Surender Singh.

Anil Khanna nominated for 4 key posts

13 : Asian Tennis Federation president Anil Khanna has been nominated for 4 key positions of the International Tennis Federation for a 2 year term.Khanna will be the chairman of ITF Worldwide Development Advisors Group & has been nominated to Co-Chair of ITF’s New Properties Taskforce.He has also been nominated to be a member of Finance Committee of ITF.

Nakul elected as BARC India Chairman

12 : Nakul Chopra, President of AAAI & Senior Advisor, Publicis Communications has been elected as the Chairman of BARC India. Nakul succeeds Sudhanshu Vats, who completed his 1 year tenure as Chairman. Vats has been on the board of BARC India since its inception & will continue in his capacity as a board member. Kharola takes over as Air India CMD

Senior IAS officer Pradeep Singh Kharola has took charge as the chairman and managing director (CMD) of Air India. He assumed the charge from Rajiv Bansal.He was the managing director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd since February 2015.He would be steering the national carrier at a time when the government has started the process for its strategic disinvestment.

Deepak Parekh as first Intl Ambassador

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has named Indian businessman, Deepak Parekh, as International Ambassador who will be tasked with championing UK capital across the globe.Parekh is the chairman of HDFC Ltd and also sits on the boards of a number of companies across diverse sectors.Parekh is also a member of the City of Londons Advisory Council for India which guides City’s engagement with India.

Commission to study minority status

National Commission for Minorities has formed a 3 member committee to study the matter of minority status to Hindus in 8 states where their population is less than 50%. The panel, led by commission’s Vice Chairman George Kurien, has been given 3 months to submit its report. The states & UT named in the plea are Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, J&K, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur& Punjab

Infosys Appoints Parekh as MD & CEO

Infosys announced the appointment of Salil S. Parekh as its new CEO and Managing Director.Salil was in Capgemini earlier.The Bengaluru-headquartered company was searching for a new CEO after former CEO Vishal Sikka resigned in August 2017.Cofounder Nandan Nilekani returned to the company as non-executive chairman to steady operations.

Surya Re-Appointed Prasar Bharati Chief

Veteran journalist A Surya Prakash has been appointed the chairman of the Prasar Bharati board for a second consecutive term till February 8, 2020.Information and broadcasting ministry issued an order after a panel headed by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu recommended Prakash’s name for the post.His first term as the Chairman of Prasar Bharati had ended on October 28.

Centre initiates safecity plan for women

Centre has initiated the process of formulating comprehensive safe-city plans for women in 8 metropolitan cities of the country. The plan will be implemented in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Lucknow & Hyderabad. Steering Committee meeting, under the chairmanship of Rajiv Gauba was held to examine steps taken by police & civil administration for women’s safety.

Establishment of the NAA under GST

Cabinet has given its approval for the creation of the posts of Chairman and Technical Members of the National Anti-profiteering Authority (NAA) under GST. This paves the way for the immediate establishment of this apex body. The body will ensure that the benefits of the reduction in GST rates on goods or services are passed on to the ultimate consumers by way of a reduction in price.

BSE Appoints S Ravi as its New Chairman

Eminent chartered accountant Sethurathnam Ravi has been appointed as the chairman of the leading Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Ravi, who was a public interest director at the BSE, replaced Dhirendra Swarup. The appointment has been approved by Market regulator SEBI.

Panel for air pollution in Delhi

As Delhi’s air is turning toxic over recent weeks and reaching crisis levels, the Centre stepped in and decided to set up a 7-member-committee. The committee will be under chairmanship of CK Mishra. The committee formed by the environment ministry will look to formulate short-term and long-term plans.

Sanjeev as whole-time member of SEBI

Sanjeev Kaushik has been appointed as whole time member of SEBI for a period of three years or until the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. Kaushik replaces S Raman, who retired from the post of a whole-time member in September 2017. Prior to this appointment, he was Chairman and Managing Director of India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL).

No Tax on Agri sale of less than 2 Lakh

The Income Tax Department has clarified that the cash sales of agricultural produce by a cultivator to a trader for less than 2 lakh rupees will not attract tax under the Income Tax Act. A circular issued by the Department stated the cultivator and the trader will also not have to provide their Permanent Account Number. Sushil Chandra is the Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

Ambani becomes Asia’s Richest Person

Chairman of RIL Mukesh Ambani overtook China’s Hui Ka Yan to become Asia’s richest person with a total wealth of $42.1 billion, according to Forbes’ real-time billionaire’s list. Ambani’s personal wealth rose by $466 million. Globally, Ambani stood at the 14th spot on Forbes’ real-time billionaire’s list.

Chukkapalli Appointed as CG of Korea

Suresh Chukkapalli, Chairman of Phoenix Group of Hyderabad, has been appointed as Honorary Consul General in Hyderabad by the Republic of Korea. Suresh Chukkapalli was given charge/invested formally at a ceremony in New Delhi. South Korea is the fourth largest economy in Asia and the 11th largest in the world known for its global corporations.

Dr Digamber Singh passes away in Jaipur

On 27th October 2017, former BJP minister Dr Digamber Singh passed away due to multiple organ failure, in Jaipur, Rajasthan. He was 66 years old. He was the vice-chairman of the Twenty Point Programme implementation committee. He was considered as an influential Jat leader from eastern Rajasthan. He was the Health and Industry minister from 2003 to 2008.

Co-founder of SAB TV dies

On 27th October 2017, Gautam Adhikari, Chairman and whole time Director of the SAB group, passed away after suffering a heart attack. Gautam Adhikari was 67 years old. He was the Chairman and whole time Director of the SAB group. The SAB group started as a small venture between Gautam and his brother Markand Adhikari in 1985.

Manikchand Group chairman died

Rasiklal Dhariwal, an industrialist popularly known as the ‘gutkha baron’, died due to parotid gland cancer, at Ruby Hall Clinic, in Pune. Rasiklal Dhariwal was 78 years old. He died due to parotid gland cancer. He is survived by his wife, son and four daughters. Rasiklal Dhariwal was the chairman of Manikchand group of companies. He was born in Shirur tehsil of Pune district.

Verghese appointed as WBCSD Chairman

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development has appointed NRI businessman Sunny Verghese, co-founder and CEO of Singapore-based Olam International, as its new chairman from 2018. He is the first ever Asian CEO to be appointed as Chairman in World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s 25 years of history. Sunny will succeed Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever as the Chairman.

WPP Appoints CVL Srinivas

CVL Srinivas has been appointed country manager for WPP in India. C.V.L. Srinivas, or Srini, as he is known in the industry, is a media professional with 20 years of experience. Samsung CEO Kwon Oh-hyun to resign

Kwon Oh-hyun, Samsung Electronics’ CEO, vice chairman, and the head of its hugely successful components business, has announced his resignation. He will step down from the CEO role, as well as his positions on the board and as CEO of Samsung Display, in March 2018. Mr Kwon said he had been thinking about his departure “for quite some time” and could “no longer put it off.”

PepsiCo India Chairman and CEO resigns

PepsiCo India Holdings Pvt. Ltd’s Chairman and Chief Executive officer D. Shivakumar has resigned. He will be joining Aditya Birla Group as president (corporate strategy and business development). Ahmed El Sheikh, currently senior vice-president and general manager for PepsiCo Egypt and Jordan, will succeed Shivakumar as PepsiCo India CEO.

JSA Becomes First Law Firm in GIFT City

Recommendations of Uday Kotak Committee

The SEBI panel on corporate governance led by Uday Kotak proposed sweeping changes. It aimed at tightening standards, including splitting the posts of chairman and managing director besides amending rules on independent directors, disclosures, and accounting and auditing practices. The suggestions assume greater relevance in the background of high-profile boardroom battles.

22nd GST council meeting held in Delhi

22nd meeting of the Good and Services Tax (GST) Council was held on October 6, 2017 in New Delhi, under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Government reduced GST rates on 27 items which gave relief to small and medium businesses. It also said that PAN card not required for jewellery purchase of above Rs. 50,000.

Rajnish Kumar to be next SBI chairman

Rajnish Kumar has been appointed as the next chairman of State Bank of India. He will take over Arundhati Bhattacharya, whose term will come to an end this week. Kumar is expected to get a four-year term as chairman and managing director. He is currently the managing director for the National Banking Group.

Tyagi named among world’s top regulators

According to a report, Sebi Chairman Ajay Tyagi has been named among the top 10 regulators in the world. Tyagi, who took over the reins of SEBI this year, has been ranked at 7th position among the top 10 regulators worldwide. Rankings are part of World’s Most Influential People in Market Structure, also known as Exchange Invest 1000. The list is topped by EU’s Commissioner Margrethe Vestager

Shashi Shankar appointed CMD of ONGC

Shashi Shanker has been appointed as the chairman and managing director of India’s biggest oil and gas producer ONGC. Shankar, at present director (technical and field services), ONGC, will take over the charge as CMD from October 1. He will replace Dinesh K Sarraf, who retires on September 30, upon attaining superannuation age. Shankar will have a nearly 4-year term until March 2021.

Hui Ka Yan Becomes Asia’s Richest Man

Hui Ka Yan, the chairman of big China real estate developer China Evergrande Group, has become Asia’s richest man. Hui’s estimated fortune of $42.2 billion puts him ahead of Tencent Holdings Chairman Ma Huateng ($39.1 billion) and Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma ($38.9 billion). Hui’s wealth advance has been driven by an extraordinary rally in Hong Kong-listed Evergrande’s share price.

Balraj Joshi appointed CMD of NHPC

Balraj Joshi has been appointed as the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NHPC, the country’s premier hydro power utility. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment to the post till December 31, 2019. Joshi is at present Director (Technical) in the organisation. NHPC is among the TOP TEN companies in the country in terms of investment.

Advani renominated as chairman

Veteran BJP leader L K Advani has been renominated as chairman of the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. Besides Advani, all other 14 members have also been given another term. The Ethics Committee examines every complaint relating to the unethical conduct of a member referred to it. It is also free to take up suo motu investigation into matters relating to ethics.
