India Heritage Walk fete wins PATA award
India Heritage Walk Festival, a collaboration of Sahapedia and YES Arts & Culture, has been awarded the PATA Gold Award 2018. Sahapedia is an open online resource on the arts, cultures and heritage of India. Sahapedia got the award, announced by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) in Bangkok, has been presented to it under the ‘Heritage-Culture’ category.

Nabard award to Repco Micro Finance Ltd

Repco Micro Finance Ltd, a non-banking finance company received Nabard 2018 award. The award is given service to self-help group in Tamil Nadu for the fiscal year 2017-18. The NBFC has disbursed loans amounting to ₹2,500 crore to over 10 lakh beneficiaries. NABARD Financial Services Limited is a subsidiary of NABARD to provide financial services in areas of agriculture & microfinance.

‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ award for Aruna Sairam

Carnatic vocalist Aruna Sairam has been selected for this year’s ‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ award of the Music Academy. Veteran Mridangam artiste ‘Thanjavur’ R Ramadas was selected for the ‘Sangita Kala Acharya’ award. The ‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ and other music awards would be presented at the ‘Sadas’ of the music festival on January 1, 2019.

T.K Chand gets knowledge excellence award

Dr. Tapan Kumar Chand received the Knowledge Excellence Award from Secretary, Mines, Govt. of India for Outstanding Contribution in Aluminium Knowledge domain. Chand is an Indian mining veteran and is the Chairman cum Managing Director of National Aluminium Company (NALCO). NALCO is the largest integrated aluminium unit in Asia and is also one of the largest aluminium complexes of the world.

MP to be awarded for reducing MMR

Madhya Pradesh will be awarded for reducing maternal mortality under Prime Minister’s Safe Motherhood Campaign. An unprecedented 48-digit decline in maternal deaths in Madhya Pradesh has been registered. The maternal mortality rate was 221 in the year 2011-13, which has now dropped down further to just 173.

Sagarmala receives Gold Award at Skoch Summit

The Ministry of Shipping’s flagship programme for port-led-prosperity ‘Sagarmala’ received the ‘Gold Award’ at 52nd Skoch Summit 2018 in New Delhi. The Skoch Awards recognize leadership and excellence in accelerating socio-economic changes. Sagarmala is the programme of govt for port-led-development of the country through harnessing 7,500 km long coastline, 14,500 km of navigable waterways.

Technip FMC wins special recognition from GCNI

TechnipFMC has received a special recognition award for their flagship community development initiative in India, ‘Seed of Hope’, at the 13th National Convention 2018 for developing Suva village in Dahej, Gujarat. The convention was held by Global Compact Network India on June 8 at Shangri-La, Bengaluru. The theme of the convention is Sustainable Development Goals: Blueprint for action.

Indian peacekeepers in sudan awarded UN medal

The 7 Garhwal Rifles Infantry Battalion Group was awarded the United Nations Medal for selfless service in the peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. Indian Battalion played an active and decisive role in ensuring peace and stability in Jonglei State. India is a leading contributor to the United Nations Peacekeeping missions. India contributes over 6,000 troops in 14 missions across the world.

Surat Selected for best smart city award

Surat city has been awarded best city award under the Smart City Mission’s award for implementation of projects in urban environment, transport and mobility and sustainable integrated development. Bhopal and Ahmedabad have been selected as joint winners under innovative idea award category. The Ministry of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs issued the award.

Vishwas Mandalik from Nasik and the Yoga Institute in Mumbai have been selected as recipients of the Prime Minister’s award. They are being awarded for their outstanding contribution for promotion and development of yoga for the year 2018. Social reformer & founder of Sulabh Int. Bindeshwar Pathak was honoured with Japan’s prestigious Nikkei Asia Prize. The award was given under Culture and Community category for his significant work in tackling poor hygiene and discrimination. Launched in 1996, the award honours people in Asia who have made significant contributions in science, technology & innovation and culture & community.

Padma Shri award given to Tommy Koh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the Padma Shri award, one of India’s highest civilian awards, to former Singaporean diplomat Tommy Koh in Singapore. Koh was among 10 ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) receipts of the prestigious award. Koh has served as Singapore’s ambassador to the US and the UN.

Kerala cartoonist wins international award

Kerala cartoonist Thomas Antony has won an international award, in the best caricature category. Antony, currently working as Executive Artist of Malayalam daily ‘Metro Vaartha’, is among the nine winners at the 13th edition of the World Press Cartoon awards. The awards are given to the best works published in 2017 in newspapers and magazines from around the world.

‘Santokbaa Humanitarian’ award

30 : Child rights activist and Noble Laureate Kailash Satyarthi and space scientist A S Kiran Kumar, Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), were given ‘Santokbaa Humanitarian Award’. The award was presented by the President of India. The award is instituted by Shree Ramkrishna Knowledge Foundaton (SRKKF).

Yuvraj awarded the icon of the year award

Indian star cricketer Yuvraj Singh has been awarded the ‘most inspiring icon of the year for Social Welfare”. The award was given by the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival for his exemplary contribution in the field of social welfare. Yuvraj opened his foundation ‘YouWeCan’ that focuses on creating cancer awareness.

Delhi Daredevils wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant was named Emerging Player of IPL 11. Sunil Narine also picked up two awards — Super Striker and Valuable Player. Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Kane Williamson (735 runs) got the Orange Cap while Kings XI pacer Andrew Tye (24 wickets) got the Purple Cap.

Biodiversity award for Arunachal reserve

An NGO, Singchung Bugun Community Reserve, won the India Biodiversity Award 2018 in the category of ‘Conservation of wildlife species’ The NGO bagged the prize for its unique endeavor & contributions towards conserving the rare wildlife resources of that area. The prize was presented by Union Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change & was conferred by National Biodiversity Authority.

Messi won European Golden Shoe

Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has won his 5th European Golden Shoe after his team defeated Real Sociedad in their final La Liga match of the season. Messi won the award with 34 goals, for a total of 68 points during the 2017-18 season. Messi is the only player to have won the European Golden Shoe 5 times. 4-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo finished 9th after scoring 26 goals for Real Madrid.

Bhosle to be conferred with Banga Bibhushan

Asha Bhosle will be conferred with the highest civilian award of West Bengal, the Banga Bibhushan, by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She has done playback singing for over a thousand Bollywood movies & has sung in over 20 Indian & foreign languages. Bengal government in 2011 instituted Banga Bibhushan award to recognize the services of eminent personalities from their respective fields.

Pawel Pawlikowski won the best director award

Poland’s Pawel Pawlikowski won the best director award at the 2018 Cannes film festival for his love story “Cold War”. Cold War is the 1st Polish film to compete for the Palme d’Or award since Roman Polanski’s ‘The Pianist’ scooped up the major award in 2002. Set against the background of the Cold War in the 1950’s in Poland, the film depicts an impossible love story in impossible times.

Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency got award

Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency (TNeGA) has received an award for promoting ease of doing business. TNeGA developed an investor facilitation portal that provides single window clearance to industrial proposals in the state. The award was given in recognition of simplification of procedure and ease with which clearances from various authorities can be procured by a business.

Jagriti Yatra won charity award in UK

Jagriti Yatra, an Indian charity that organizes train journeys to understand & build India of smaller towns & villages has won an award in London. It was among a series of worldwide charities and individuals recognized for their impact on their communities at the Asian Voice Charity Awards. It organizes 15-day train journeys, covering 800 km for 400 change-makers across India every year.

Shoplifters won Palme d’Or 2018

The Japanese family drama Shoplifters has received the coveted award for best film, the ‘Palme d’Or’, at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. ‘Shoplifters’ has been hailed as a modest masterpiece from a veteran filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda that centres on a small-time thief who takes a young girl home to his family. The Palme d’Or is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival.

US-based Kathak dancer Anindita Anaam was honoured with the prestigious ‘Shri Jayadev Rashtriya Yuva Pratibha Puraskar 2018’ for outstanding contribution to the field of art. Nuclear Power Corp of India has won the top award in public communication category at the 10th anniversary of international event ATOMEXPO. NPCIL won the award for its “Atom on Wheels” campaign started in 2016 to spread awareness in rural areas about the benefits of nuclear energy. The campaign mounted on wheels covered 6 lakh rural population in 6 states with material on nuclear technology

The founder of Sulabh International, Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, has been honoured with the Nikkei Asia Prize in Japan for his contribution to Asia’s development. Pathak is among the three who have been conferred with the award. Nikkei Inc., one of the largest media corporations in Japan, has been presenting the awards since 1996.

Famous theoretical physicist EC George Sudarshan passed away in Texas, USA.He worked in the subjects of quantum Zeno effect, optical coherence, open quantum system, non-variance groups among others. In 2007, the Kerala-born scientist was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian award.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year. The Egypt star – the first African winner of the award – also won the Professional Footballers’ Association player of the year award in April. India to host Asian Weightlifting C’ships

Indian will host the prestigious Asian Weightlifting Championship in 2019.The Championship was awarded to India at the Executive Board Meeting and Congress of the Asian Weightlifting Federation held on April 22 at Urgench, Uzbekistan. K-Pop Group BTS won TIME 100 Reader Poll

South Korean pop group BTS has won the online reader’s poll for TIME ‘Person of the Year 2018’.South Korean President Moon Jae-in finished second with 5% votes, followed by former US President Barack Obama with 3% votes. The group won the Top Social Artist title at last year’s Billboard Music Awards and earned a spot on TIME’s list of the Most Influential People on the Internet in 2017.

Mithali Raj adjudged Sportsperson of the Year

Indian women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj was adjudged ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ at the Telangana Sports Journalists Association annual awards for 2017.She is the highest run-scorer in women’s international cricket and the only female cricketer to surpass the 6,000 run mark in ODIs. In December 2017, she was named as one of the players in the ICC Women’s ODI Team of the Year.

Shekhar to head National Film Awards jury

Veteran director Shekhar Kapur has been appointed the chairman of the central panel of the 65th National Film Awards. The central panel comprises a chairperson and 10 other members, including five regional chairpersons who head the respective regional panels. The 11-member committee reportedly includes lyricist Mehboob, actress Gautami Tadimalla and director Rahul Rawail.

‘Most Improved Airport’ in Asia Pacific region

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad has received the award for the Most Improved Airport in the Asia Pacific region. It is the 1st international award for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport that has over 200 flight movements per day. In 2016-17, it handled over 7.4 million passengers making it the 8th busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic in India.

Joginder Sanger won Business Personality award

Joginder Sanger, a leading NRI entrepreneur has won the =Business Personality of the year 2018‘ award in the UK. 23 : Google celebrated the 102nd birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna awardee and Shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan on 21st March. He was awarded with Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi. The doodle has been illustrated by a Chennai-based illustrator, Vijay Krish, according to the Google.

Palace on Wheels got tourist train award

The luxury train ‘Palace on Wheels’ of Rajasthan, popular among foreign tourists, has bagged the ‘Tourist Train of the Year’ award of the Pacific Area Travel Writers‘ Association. It was launched by the Indian Railways in association with Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation to promote tourism in Rajasthan. The Palace on Wheels was started on 26 January 1982.

Amol Palekar receives “Godavari Gaurav” award

Noted actor Amol Palekar has been honoured with the ‘Godavari Gaurav’ award. Palekar known for his performance in films like Gol Maal, Choti Si Baat, Chitchor among others, was presented with the award, which has been instituted by =Kusumagraj Prathishthan‘. The award was given by noted Marathi writer Madhu Mangesh Karnik, who is the chairperson of the Prathishthan.

Sufi singer Pyarelal Wadali passed away

The Sufi singing pair of Wadali Brothers was broken as Pyarelal Wadali, the younger brother, passed away at the age of 65 in Amritsar. Besides Sufi kalaam and qawwali, the brothers sang the bhajan, ghazal and kaafi forms. The brothers got Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1992, Tulsi Award in 1998, and Punjabi Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2003.

Mauritius President to resign

The Mauritius President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim will resign next week. She is internationally renowned and is feted on the world stage, and is the recipient of the L‘Oréal-UNESCO award for women in science. Gurib-Fakim was appointed to The Planet Earth Institute board in 2015. The Planet Earth Institute is accredited by the United Nations Environmental Program.

Ivory became oldest person to win an Oscar

James Ivory became the oldest person to win an Oscar with his award win for best adapted screenplay for the film ‘Call Me By Your Name’ at the 90th Academy Awards. The 89-year-old director and screenwriter had previously been nominated thrice in the best director category for ‘A Room with a View’, ‘Howards End’ and ‘The Remains of the Day’.

Set in Baltimore in 1962, the plot follows a mute custodian at a high-security government laboratory who falls in love with a captured humanoid-amphibian creature.

India won Snooker Team World Cup

India defeated Pakistan in the inaugural IBSF Snooker Team World Cup in Doha. The Indian combine of Pankaj Advani and Manan Chandra came back from 0-2 down in the best-of-five final to clinch it with a margin of 3-2. The Indian team was awarded $15,000 (nearly ` 10 lakh) for winning the tournament.

New law for rape offenders in Haryana

Haryana government gave its nod to a proposal to bring in a legislation that would have a provision awarding death penalty to those guilty of raping girls aged 12 years or less. Existing criminal laws related to sexual offences will be made more stringent. In case of rape of a girl upto 12 years of age, there will be a punishment of death or rigorous imprisonment of not less than 14 years.

She was 55.A versatile actor, Sridevi made her Bollywood debut in 1978 with Solva Sawan. Parupalli Kashyap wins Austrian Open

CBFC clears S Durga without any cuts

Govt extends transmission charge waiver

Govt has extended the waiver of inter-state power transmission charges & losses for solar & wind power projects commissioned till 31 March 2022.Earlier waiver was available to solar & wind power projects commissioned till 31 Dec 2019& 31 March 2019, respectively. Order also provides that waiver would be available to only those projects which are awarded through competitive bidding process.

Noted agricultural scientist Gurcharan Singh Kalkat, who was known for his role in bringing Green Revolution to Punjab, passed away after a brief illness.Kalkat was awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan for his work. Nation Celebrates 69th Republic Day

The Country celebrates its 69th Republic Day on 26th January.The family members of Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala (Posthumous) of the Indian Air Force (IAF), who died fighting militants in Kashmir valley, received India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, Ashok Chakra. This is the third Ashok Chakra for the IAF and its first for ground combat.

Sheikh Salim to get second highest award

A bus driver from Gujarat who drove through a hail of bullets and saved the lives of more than 50 Amarnath Yatra pilgrims last year has been selected for the Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak.It is the second highest honour given to civilians for gallantry after the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak. Sheikh Salim Gafur displayed rare grit and bravery.

25 : CM Edappady received the Unesco Award of Merit awarded to the iconic Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam.The Award of Merit, 2017, was given by Unesco Asia Pacific region for the cultural heritage conservation activities taken up at the temple without altering its original splendour. Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan was honoured with the 24th Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.According to the WEF, Shah Rukh Khan received Award for “his leadership in championing children’s and women’s rights in India”.
