Zuckerberg becomes 3rd richest person

Mark Zuckerberg has leapfrogged Warren Buffett to become the third richest person in the world. Zuckerberg is now worth $81.6 billion, about $373 million more than Buffett, the chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Zuckerberg trails only Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos and Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates.

New World heritage site: Chiribiquete Park

Being the ninth site in Colombia to be given the status of world heritage site, Chiribiquete park is the country’s largest park and has one of the highest rates of plant diversity in the northern Amazon. It is located on one of the world’s oldest rock formations, the Guiana Shield. It was first declared a national park in 1989. It also bears traces of ancient human life.

Jeff Bezos becomes richest man in the world

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos becomes the richest man in the world with a net worth of USD 141.9 billion according to the Forbes world’s billionaire list. Bezos beat the principal founder of Microsoft Corp. Bill Gates, who is the second richest man with a total wealth of USD 92.9 billion. Bezos’ company Amazon has now become the second most valuable company in the world after Apple.

Microsoft becomes third most valuable firm

Microsoft has surpassed Alphabet, in the market capitalisation for the first time in 3 years, becoming the 3rd most valuable firm after Apple & Amazon globally. On May 29, 2018, Microsoft reportedly had a market cap of $753 billion at the close of trading, almost $14 billion ahead of Alphabet. Apple leads with a market cap of $924 billion & Amazon is at second spot with nearly $783 billion.

Blue Origin launches its first space mission

Blue Origin, the US aerospace company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has launched its suborbital ‘New Shepard’ rocket and space capsule. The mission marked the company’s first test flight of the year and second flight of the New Shepard 2.0 spacecraft. New Shepard is a reusable vertical takeoff, vertical landing space vehicle, consisting of a pressurized capsule atop a booster.

HDFC Bank launched humanoid IRA 2.0

HDFC Bank has announced the launch of IRA 2.0, its interactive humanoid in Bengaluru.IRA will interact with customers, answer bank-related queries, frequently asked questions, and guide them inside the branch with voice-based navigation. HDFC Bank also launched its virtual assistant ‘EVA’ on Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The first version of IRA is currently stationed in Kochi.

Amazon launched ‘Internet’

Amazon has launched an Android web browser app called ‘Internet’ for emerging markets.The browser doesn’t occupy much storage space on a user’s device & does not collect private data like other browsers. The app is only available to users in India for the time being & is supported on devices running Android 5.0 or higher

Amazon launches international shopping from US

Amazon has launched an international shopping feature that will enable customers across the world to shop more than 45 million items that can be shipped to their country from U.S.It will allow customers to shop in 25 currencies, with more languages and currencies to be added in 2018.The international shopping feature will display pricing, shipping costs and import duty estimates.

Trouble in Flipkart-Amazon merger

The possible coming together of online retailers Amazon and Flipkart is likely to face close scrutiny on competition issues.Engaged in intense competition, home-grown Flipkart and Amazon India are leading players in the Indian online retail market place. The combined market share of the two parties, which is around 80 percent is most likely to pose challenges to the deal.

Mukesh Ambani is Asia’s third-richest man and is ranked 19 in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.Apart from Ambani, there are 23 Indians in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index top 500 lists. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates still hold on to the top two spots.
