Acid Leak at Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi

A Sulphuric acid leak is detected at Sterlite Copper plant, a Vedanta group company in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The leak was detected in one of the storage units but as the plant was non-operational nobody was harmed. The evacuation from the sulphuric acid plant would take a day with assistance of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Inspectorate of Factories.

Permits key to claim insurance: SC

Insurance companies are not liable to compensate accident claims for public transport vehicles plying without permits, the Supreme Court said. ‘Permits’ are authorisation given by State authorities to use motor vehicles as transport vehicles. The verdict came on an accident involving a truck which fatally hit a two-wheeler rider in February 2013 at Pathankot.

Free treatment for victims of road accident

Gujarat government has decided to take the financial responsibility of the accident cases within its state limits. The government will provide up to Rs. 50,000 in medical treatment for the first 48 hours for each individual who meets with a road accident in the state. The free treatment will entail the initial first aid, X-ray, treatment in ICU along with all the other emergency facilities.

Railways to pay compensation if person dies

The Supreme Court held that the Indian Railways must pay compensation in case of death or injury while boarding or deboarding trains. It added that in case of an accident or untoward incident, the Railways must pay compensation whether or not there has been a wrongful act, neglect or fault on the part of the administration. The railways cannot plead negligence on the part of the victims.

Road safety week 2018

With the objective to sensitise people about road safety, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is organizing the 29th edition of Road Safety Week from 23rd to 30th April.During the week, creating awareness about various causes of road accidents & measures to prevent them will be highlighted through various activities. 1.5 lakh persons in India are killed in road crashes every year.

UN launches road safety trust fund

The United Nations took a major step to address the tragedy of road accidents by launching the UN Road Safety Trust Fund.The trust fund will support efforts along with the five pillars of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety. The UN General Assembly – the UN body with universal membership of all 193 Member States – adopted a resolution on road safety on 13th April.

Noida gets free dispensary for stray animals

A free, 24×7 dispensary for stray animals has been set up in Noida by a non-profitable group called House of Stray Animals.The dispensary, which will be overseen by expert veterinary doctors, will also have a mobile OPD to treat suffering stray animals. An emergency OPD-on-wheels will also be available for animals who have suffered serious injuries in accidents.

CRPF starts bike ambulance in Bastar

The CRPF has launched a bike ambulance initiative in areas of anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh, for providing basic healthcare facilities to those living in remote jungle areas of Bastar region.Medical teams, accompanied by well-armed security personnel ride their motorcycles to help the sick and injured in about 70 villages. The battalion is based in Bijapur.

Free treatment for road victims: Kerala

Kerala has decided to formulate a trauma-care scheme in the State wherein all emergency care and treatment will be provided to accident victims free-of-cost for the first 48 hours. The government will pay for the emergency care expenses incurred by a hospital. No money should be collected from the accident victim or his/her relatives for the emergency.
