Temple city welcomes New Year in traditional style

The usual bash thrown by hotels and clubs on the eve of new year notwith-standing, many Madurai residents preferred to commerce the year on a divine note throwing places of worship, most notably the Meanakshi temple. Long queues were seen outside the temple since morning, with devotees of various hues making it to the temple and pray, a feature that on old-timer says has been increasing with passing year. The scene at the fort of the picturesque Alagar hills was similar, with about 30,000 devotees seeking blessings and wish fulfilment.
