Animal kingdom declared as legal entity
The Uttarakhand High Court declared the entire animal kingdom including birds and aquatic animals a legal entity with rights of a living person. “The entity acts like a natural person but only through a designated person, whose acts are processed within the ambit of law,” said HC. Hence, the animal kingdom could be represented by a custodian.

Ban on polythene in Uttarakhand from July 31
In Uttarakhand, Polythene will be completely prohibited from 31st July in the state. All the polythene vendors have been asked to finish the polyethene stock before 31st July. One week before the ban, a mass awareness campaign about environmental damage caused by polythene would be undertaken in the entire state.

India-Nepal joint military exercise begins
A joint military exercise between India and Nepal began on May 30 in Uttrakhand. The military exercise, which is set to conclude of June 12, is called ‘Surya Kiran’ and is conducted alternatively in India and Nepal every six months. Surya Kiran with Nepal is India’s largest military exercise in terms of troop participation.

Uttarakhand Cabinet held meeting in a boat
The Uttarakhand Cabinet organised a meeting in a boat named Marina on the Tehri Reservoir. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat was present for the cabinet meeting. Notably, a cabinet meeting was held outside the capital of the state for the first time ever. Famous Tehri Dam is located on the river Bhagirathi.

Former UP Governor Banwari Lal Joshi passed away at AIIMS due to septic shock after an infection on the valves. Joshi was 82 years old.He has served as governor of many states.He has served as lieutenant governor of Delhi, governor of Meghalaya, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Utpal Kumar Singh becomes Uttarakhand CS
Senior IAS officer Utpal Kumar Singh took charge as the new chief secretary of Uttarakhand replacing S Ramaswamy, in Dehradun. Utpal Kumar Singh is a 1986 batch IAS officer. He was earlier posted on deputation in New Delhi as additional secretary in the ministry of agriculture. He has earlier served as the principal secretary of various departments in Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand launches ‘Solar Briefcase’
Uttarakhand State Government and a charitable funding agency named Swan Cultural Center and Foundation, launched ‘Solar Briefcase’ in Kedarnath Dham. This initiative aims to provide electricity to far flung areas in Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has stated that around 47 villages and 1,40,000 families in Uttarakhand do not have access to electricity.

AP adopts national policy for Tibetans
Arunachal Pradesh has adopted a rehabilitation policy which deals with matters concerning land lease, extending Central & state benefits to Tibetans residing in the state. With this AP joins Himachal Pradesh & Uttarakhand who have already done the same in 2015 after Govt of India formalized Tibetan Rehabilitation policy act in 2014. Arunachal Pradesh houses 4h largest no of Tibetans in India

AAI and Uttarakhand Govt.inks MoU
Airports Authority of India has signed a MoU with Govt of Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority. The scope of MoU is to identify relevant factors influencing development of civil aviation infrastructure in Uttarakhand. AAI will also assist UCADA in obtaining necessary clearances for airport operations starting with the upgraded airport at Pithoragarh and later at Chiniyalisaur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the inauguration of the Char Dham project is a tribute to those who lost their lives during the flash floods in Uttarakhand. Addressing a parivartan rally in Dehradun, the Prime Minister said the Char Dham project offers employment opportunities for the people of Uttarakhand. The project will allow uninterrupted access for pilgrims to the four Himalayan shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri which bore the brunt of devastating floods in 2013. To enhance road safety, the all-weather roads will have tunnels, bridges and flyovers.
