Floyd Mayweather with earnings of 285 million dollars topped the Forbes list of world’s 100 highest-paid entertainers. Forbes said the world’s 100 top-earning entertainers pulled in a combined $6.3 billion pretax over the past 12 months. Akshay is ranked 76th on the Forbes list of the World’s Highest Paid Celebrities 2018 while Salman is on the 82nd spot.

Marc Marquez Wins German Grand Prix

Marc Marquez cruised to his ninth consecutive German Grand Prix win to extend his MotoGP lead at Sachsenring. The Marc Marquez has won in the top category for the last six years and before that won three times in the smaller classes. Rossi finished second and Maverick Vinales coming third.

Discus thrower Vikas Gowda retires

Top Indian discus thrower Vikas Gowda has retired after competing at the highest level for more than 15 years. Gowda, who holds the national record of 66.28m, is one of the most decorated Indian athlete, having won a gold in the 2013 and 2015 Asian Championships. Awarded the Padma Shri in 2017, Gowda became the second Indian in 56 years to win an athletics gold at the CWG.

NYSE to have its first female leader

The New York Stock Exchange has appointed Chief Operating Officer Stacey Cunningham as its first female president. Cunningham will replace Tom Farley as the head of NYSE. Cunningham became NYSE’s chief operating officer in June 2015. NYSE’s move means two of the top three US stock exchange operators are led by women.

UN’s top nuclear inspector resigns suddenly

UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency has informed that its top inspector, Tero Varjoranta, has quit with immediate effect. Varjoranta, who was in the role for almost 5 yrs, will be replaced by Massimo Aparo, an Italian nuclear engineer. The move comes just days after US President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear accord.

India slips to 6th spot in biz optimism index

As per Grant Thornton’s quarterly global business survey, India slipped to the 6th position globally in the business optimism index for the first quarter of 2018. While the business optimism is at an “all-time high” globally, business sentiment in India has been the weakest since 2014. The top five nations on the index are Austria, Finland, Indonesia, Netherlands and the US.

Pradeep Kumar Sinha got one year extension

Cabinet secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha has got another one-year extension as the country’s top bureaucrat. Cabinet Secretary is the administrative head of the cabinet secretariat & is also the ex-officio chairman of the civil services board. The cabinet secretariat is under the direct charge of the Prime Minister. The cabinet secretariat assists in decision-making in the government.

India won 20 gold at junior athletics meet

India finished on top in the seven-nation competition with 20 gold, 22 silver and eight bronze medals at the 3rd South Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Colombo. Host Sri Lanka bagged rest of the 12 gold medals in the competition along with 10 silver and 19 bronze. The juniors will next represent India at the 18th Asian Junior Athletics Championships to be held in Gifu, Japan.

Aditi finishes T-6th at the Texas Classic

Indian golfer Aditi Ashok has notched up her second successive top-10 finish by finishing Tied-sixth at the Volunteers of America LPGA Texas Classic. This was Aditi’s second top-10 in a row after her Tied-seventh at LPGA Mediheal last week. Aditi is the youngest and first Indian to win the Lalla Aicha Tour School.

England jump up to number one in ODI rankings

England has replaced India at the top of International Cricket Council one-day rankings. England, who last topped the ODI rankings in Jan 2013, has gained 8 points & moved to 125 points. India with 122 points is at the 2nd position followed by South Africa & New Zealand. England’s rise up the table is because the forgettable 2014-15 season was dropped from the latest calculations.

Saina returns to top 10

Commonwealth gold medalist Saina Nehwal climbed up to return into the top-10 of the Badminton World Federation women’s singles rankings. Commonwealth mixed team gold medalist Kidambi Srikanth climbed from fifth to the third spot, while HS Prannoy jumped to a career-best eighth spot. Meanwhile, Rio Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu retained the third spot.

India slips 3 notches in FDI Confidence Index

India’s ranking fell three places to 11th spot in global consultants AT Kearney’s Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index 2018. India remained the second highest emerging market on the Index. India fell out of the top 10 for the first time since 2015. The index was topped by U.S followed by Canada and Germany at the second and third position respectively.

Saudi Aramco appoints the first woman to the board

Saudi Arabia’s Aramco, the world’s top oil company has appointed its first female board member among five new members to its board of directors.Lynn Laverty Elsenhans, the former chairwoman, president and CEO of U.S. oil refiner Sunoco is the first female board member of Aramco. Elsenhans was named by Forbes as one of the world’s most powerful women in 2008.

Rafael Nadal won the Monte Carlo Masters Title

World Number 1 Rafael Nadal defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori by 6-3, 6-2 in the Monte Carlo Masters final to win his 31st Masters title.Nadal also became the first man in the Open era to win the same title 11 times. It gave him a 76th title overall and ensured the Spaniard keeps his top ranking ahead of Roger Federer. World No. 36 Nishikori was chasing his first ever Masters title.

India’s best Gram Panchayat

West Bengal’s Digambarpur Gram Panchayat has bagged the Centre’s award for the best Gram Panchayat in the country.Of the 2.5 lakh gram panchayats in the country, the central government had selected 1000 and watched their function. The state of West Bengal is also in the top in generating rural employment across states.

India topped the remittances chart for 2017

According to World Bank, India has retained its position as the top remittances receiving country with its diaspora sending about USD 69 billion back home in 2017. Remittances to India picked up sharply by 9.9% to USD 69 billion in 2017, reversing the previous year’s dip. Remittance inflows improved in all regions and top remittance recipients were India with followed by China & Philippines.

Three-time Oscar winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg has become the first director to gross more than $10 billion at the box office.Spielberg’s latest film ‘Ready Player One’ has helped him achieve this milestone. The Alto retained its number one position by selling 258,539 units in 2017-18 as against 241,635 units in the previous financial year. Indian badminton star Kidambi Srikanth became world No. 1 in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings. Srikanth has moved to the top of the men’s singles rankings with 76895 points. In 2017, he became the first Indian to win back-to-back Super Series titles. In October 2017, Srikanth became the second Indian after Prakash Padukone to win the Denmark Open.

Mukesh Ambani is Asia’s third-richest man and is ranked 19 in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.Apart from Ambani, there are 23 Indians in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index top 500 lists. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates still hold on to the top two spots.

India ranks 109th globally in data speed

India, the largest consumer of mobile data in the world, ranks 109th when it comes to mobile Internet download speeds according to Ookla‘s Speedtest index. Norway is positioned at the top with an average download speed of 62.07 Mbps. Singapore leads in the fixed broadband front, with a download speed of 161.53 Mbps.

Rakesh Bhatnagar appointed BHU V-C

JNU professor Rakesh Bhatnagar has been appointed as the vice-chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University. He will take charge from BHU Registrar Neeraj Tripathi, who had been holding the additional charge of the top post since October last year. He is a JC Bose National Fellow and has won the ICMR award for developing a recombinant vaccine against anthrax.

Pune tops in improved quality governance

Pune has emerged as the top city to show improvement in the quality of governance according to a survey. The other cities that came in the top five include Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram, Bhubaneshwar and Surat. Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy conducted the survey. The worst performers for this year were Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Patna and Chennai.
