1st IT workers union in Tamil Nadu

India’s first independent union for information technology employees is being setup in Tamil Nadu. The Forum for Information Technology Employees, which evolved from the campaign to protect Tamils in Sri Lanka, is in the process of getting itself registered formally as a union for technology employees in India. The Forum for Information Technology Employees has over 1,000 members.

Padma bestowed with Avvaiyar award

Tamil Nadu govt honoured social worker Padma Venkataraman with the state’s “Avvaiyar Award” for 2017. Padma, daughter of former President of India, the late R Venkataraman, was honoured for her efforts in the areas of women’s welfare and rehabilitation of leprosy-affected persons for the past 30 years.

1 GW ultra mega solar park in Andhra

The world’s largest single-location solar park of 1,000 megawatts is nearing completion in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. 900 MW of the 1,000 MW has been already commissioned at the Park, and the remaining will be fully operational next month. It has already become the largest such park outpacing 648 MW solar park developed by in Tamil Nadu and Topaz Solar Park of 550 MW in California.

Karnataka the most corrupt state

Karnataka occupies the first slot in a list of states perceived to be corrupt on the basis of people’s experience in paying bribes for public services. Karnataka is followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab. Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Chhattisgarh are least corrupt. The report was published by Centre for Media Studies.

TN leads MHRD’s top-100 colleges list

A whopping 37 colleges in Tamil Nadu have made it to the rankings released by the Ministry of HRD, with three TN colleges coming in the top-10 list. Delhi’s Miranda House has the top spot in the list. Chennai’s Loyola College came in the number two spot. A total of 535 colleges have been ranked in this first-time exercise.

TN replaces ration card with smart card

Ration cards in Tamil Nadu are all set to go fully digital with. The state has launched a smart family card scheme to replace 1.89 crore cards in the state at a cost of Rs 330 crore. Consumers can continue to buy commodities at PDS outlets by using their existing ration cards till such time they received the smart cards.

KVB bags best small bank award

Karur Vysya Bank has been adjudged the ‘Best Small Bank for 2016’ (balance sheet size of less than ` 1-lakh crore). This is the eighth award won by KVB in the current fiscal. Karur Vysya Bank is an Indian private-sector bank, headquartered in Karur in Tamil Nadu.

Vetiver Network launched

17 : India Vetiver Network (INVN) has been launched at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here. INVN is a not-for-profit scientific network to promote vetiver in India. Vetiver has worldwide application to tackle many environmental issues like soil erosion, mitigation of soil and water pollution. The mission of INVN is environmental protection using vetiver.

Tamil Nadu govt cancels plot allotted for Coca-Cola plant

The Tamil Nadu government cancelled allotment of land for Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd to set up a bottling unit in Perundurai, the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (SIPCOT) complex in Erode district, amid growing protests by local residents over possible exploitation of groundwater. The Tamil Nadu government took the decision to cancel the lease agreement, blaming the firm for “not complying with the terms”. It was on June 21, 2013, SIPCOT allotted the land first and after two amendments in the agreement, a lease deed was executed and registered finally by HCCBPL on January 23, 2014.

Union Cabinet approved to set up India-based Neutrino Observatory in Tamil Nadu

Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 5 January 2015 approved to set up the India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) in Tamil Nadu. The INO laboratory will host experiments such as the neutrino-less double beta decay and the search for dark matter. The INO project will be set up near Pottipuram village in the Bodi West Hills of Theni district in Tamil Nadu. The project is at an estimated cost of 1500 crore rupees. The project also includes Inter-Institutional Centre for High Energy Physics (IICHEP) and Iron Calorimeter Detector (ICAL).
