India and South Korea ink 11 MoUs

India and South Korea have signed 11 MoU’s during South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s visit to India. A MoU on trade remedies was signed for cooperation in the area of trade remedies like anti-dumping, subsidy, countervailing and safeguard measures through consultations. A MoU on future strategy group was also inked for cooperation in the development of cutting-edge technologies.

South Korea scraps annual government war drill

South Korea has decided to scrap an annual government mobilisation drill this year as part of a suspended joint exercise with US. The Ulchi drill, which aims at examining the country’s war preparedness, usually takes place in tandem with joint Freedom Guardian military exercise with US. The suspension of the combined exercise could facilitate ongoing nuclear talks between North Korea & US.

Modi inaugurated largest mobile factory

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in visited Noida and inaugurated the New Mobile Manufacturing Plant of Samsung at Noida. Notably, it will be the world’s largest mobile factory. With the beginning of this New Plant, India’s Make In India and Skill India Will get a major Push in the country.

South Korean President to arrive in India

South Korean President, Moon Jae-in is on a four-day visit to India. During his visit, he will hold talks with PM Modi on several issues, including the situation on the Korean peninsula & ways to boost bilateral trade and defence cooperation. Moon’s visit to India comes nearly a month after the historic summit between US President Donald Trump & North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

ROK & DPRK reopen maritime communication

North Korea and South Korea Sunday reopened maritime communication channel for the first time in 10 years with vessels from the 2 countries making contact. North Korean patrol boat responded immediately when the South Korean Navy contacted it via an international radio channel in the western sea. The Korean govt on both sides are working on confidence-building measures to boost cooperation.

BHEL and Korean firm work on curbing emission

BHEL has inked a pact with South Korean firm NANO Co Ltd for design and manufacture emission control devices. The Technology Collaboration Agreement (TCA) with NANO Co is for design and manufacture of SCR Catalysts for De-NOx application in coal-fired plants. In India, there is a 32% increase in SO2 levels and 34% rise in PM2.5 levels.

PRC, India and ROK see wealth loss of $1.4 tn

China, India and South Korea, which are the three biggest Asian markets, excluding Japan, have seen erosion in market capitalisation of $1.4 trillion in 2018. The US, UK & France have fared much better, indicating global funds could be shifting their preference away from riskier emerging markets. This is attributed to rising bond yields, improved economic outlook & strengthening currency.

South Korean war games in Dokdo Island

South Korea began a 2-day war game on 18 June 2018 to defend disputed Dokdo island against Japan which involves 6 warships and 7 aircraft. Seoul Controls the islands in the sea of Japan since the end of Japanese colonial rule on the Korean peninsula. Tokyo also claims the islands which are known as Takeshima in Japan and accuse Seoul of occupying them illegally.

A historic event: North-South Korea meet

In a historic turn of events, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on April 27, 2018 stepped into South Korean border for a day of talks with the Southern President Moon Jae-in.Kim and Moon signed “Panmunjom Declaration,” named after the truce village in the Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas.Both leaders also agreed to work jointly for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

S Korea, US began joint military drills

South Korea &US have kicked off their annual joint military exercises after they were delayed about a month for Olympics.Foal Eagle field exercise, which involves combined ground, air, naval & special operation troops, will continue for a month while the computer-simulated Key Resolve is scheduled for 2 weeks. The two drills would involve 23,700 US troops & 300,000 South Korean forces.

Gotsurve as next ambassador to Korea

Shri Atul M. Gotsurve (IFS: 2004), currently Director in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Democratic People‘s Republic of Korea. He is expected to take up his assignment shortly. Moon Jae-in is the president of South Korea.
