Rule to deport if H-1B extension is rejected

H-1B visa holders could be deported if their application for a visa extension has been rejected and the tenure of stay granted has expired. A policy memorandum permits the US Citizenship and Immigration Services to issue “notices to appear” (NTA) before an immigration judge. The individuals have to stay on in the US for several months without a job which would be troublesome financially.

UK’s Brexit minister resigns

Britain’s Brexit minister David Davis has resigned from the Cabinet stating policy differences over PM Theresa May’s exit plan from the European Union. It is a blow to May as she seeks to win over Eurosceptic MPs to her proposed Brexit vision, which would form the basis of UK’s position in ongoing talks with EU. Junior minister for housing Dominic Raab will be Britain’s new Brexit minister.

SC for Live-Streaming Of Court Hearings

Senior lawyer Indira Jaising and others filed a petition for live streaming of Court’s proceedings. The Centre in its reply to the petition said if the top court takes a policy decision; it can facilitate the setting up of a separate channel for the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Deepak Misra said, “The concept of access to justice can be stretched through live streaming.

WB announces ‘one person, one car’ policy

In an attempt to cut the costs incurred by the state over travel expenses of ministers and bureaucrats, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the ‘one person, one car’ policy. Further mandating economy class travel in low-cost airlines for all domestic air trips, she added that foreign travels will be sanctioned only by her.

Centre approved WIPO treaties

The Union Cabinet approved the WIPO Copyright Treaty and WIPO Performers and Phonograms Treaty, 1996. It extends coverage of copyright to the internet and digital environment. The approval is a step towards the objective laid in the National Intellectual Property Rights Policy. It will enable creative right-holders enjoy the fruit of their labour, through international copyright system.

UP Government announced new policy

UP Government announced a new Defence Manufacturing Policy, called ‘UP Defence Aerospace Unit and Employment Generating Policy, 2018’. The policy is for the entrepreneurs who are willing to invest and would project an investment of ` 50,000 crores for upcoming 5 years. The policy is also expected to generate 2.5 lakh jobs

DEPwD to Organize workshop for PwDs”

Dept. of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) is organizing a “National Workshop on Skill Development for Persons with Disabilities”. The workshop is being organized with a view to provide a platform to all stakeholders ranging from training partners to the policy makers as well as employers. The Workshop will dwell upon all the issues involved in the skill development for PwDs.

PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline extended

The CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) extended the deadline for the PAN-Aadhaar linking to March 31, 2019. The policy-making body of the tax department issued an order, under Section 119 of the Income Tax Act extending the deadline. The CBDT order has come against the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s extension of the March 31, 2018 deadline for linking Aadhaar card.

S. Ramesh appointed as Chairman of CBIC

S Ramesh has been appointed as Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), the apex policy-making body for indirect taxes. Ramesh, an officer of the Indian Revenue Service had mandated with the responsibility of implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The CBIC, which works under the Finance Ministry, is headed by a Chairman and can has 6 members.

Fed Reserve raises rates

15 : In raising its benchmark overnight lending rate a quarter of a percentage point to a range of 1.75% to 2%, the Fed Reserve of US marked a milestone in the U.S. central bank’s shift in monetary policy. After the rate-setting, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said that the US economy is doing very well. The rate hike marks a shift in US policies used to battle the 2007-2009 financial crisis.
