EDMC gets SKOCH Award under solid waste mgmt

East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) won Order-of-Merit Awards from SKOCH under solid waste management category for its construction and demolition waste processing plant. The waste plant at Shastri Park processes 500 tonnes of construction waste per day & converts it into products such as bricks, stone, sand etc. The plant is in line with Swachh Bharat Mission and Smart City inititaive.

Acid Leak at Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi

A Sulphuric acid leak is detected at Sterlite Copper plant, a Vedanta group company in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The leak was detected in one of the storage units but as the plant was non-operational nobody was harmed. The evacuation from the sulphuric acid plant would take a day with assistance of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Inspectorate of Factories.

L&T’s Nabha Power shuts 700 MW unit

L&T Group firm Nabha Power Ltd. (NPL) said it had been forced to shut a 700 MW unit of Rajpura thermal power station due to shortage of coal. The present crisis was triggered by disruption in the supply of coal rakes to the plant. NPL has been facing coal crisis since last year, forcing it to operate the plant at critical levels of coal stocks i.e. less than seven days.

539 species discovered in India in 2017

539 new species of plants and animals were discovered by scientists in the country in 2017, say publications from ZSI and BSI. Animal Discoveries, 2017 lists 300 new species of fauna. Plant Discoveries, 2017 lists 239 new flora species. Besides these discoveries, the biodiversity in the country recorded another 263 species with 174 new records of animals and 89 of plants found.

Panel to look into black money recovery

A parliamentary panel headed by Murali Manohar Joshi will study the recovery of black money & performance of public sector banks. 30-member Estimates Committee has decided to study a host of subjects related to various ministries in the year 2018-19. The panel will also look into the import of uranium for nuclear plants, mining activities & environment among other matters.

First record of invasive aphid in Kashmir

The brown peach aphid – an insect that attacks temperate fruit trees – has been found in Kashmir Valley for the first time. Aphids feed on the saps of plants, attacking plant tissues that transport food to all different plant parts. The brown peach aphid is a notorious pest of peach and almond trees in the Mediterranean regions.

ADB to give ` 1,700 crore aid to U’khand

The Asian Development Bank has agreed to give an aid of Rs 1,700 crore to Uttarakhand.The aid will be given for the creation of infrastructural facilities, sewer treatment plants and water supply facilities in urban areas of Uttarakhand. This was conveyed to Chief Minister of Uttrakhand by the country director of ADB’s India Regiment Mission.

India, Equatorial Guinea inked three MoUs

Three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between India and Equatorial Guinea.The MoUs were signed towards affirming cooperation in the fields of medicinal plants, traditional systems of medicine, and health and medicine sector. An action plan was also devised on cooperation in the field of Information and Communicational Technology.

New plant species found in Western Ghats

Researchers have discovered a new plant species from the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot.Classified as a sedge, the grass-like plant has been named ‘Fimbristylis agasthyamalaensis’ after the locality from which it was found. The new species belongs to the Cyperaceae family. In India, the genus is represented by 122 species, of which 87 are reported from the Western Ghats.

OPIC loan for drinking water project in India

The U.S. government‘s Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) committed a Rs. 80 crore loan to WaterHealth India Pvt Ltd, which will help finance installation of 900 decentralised plants in India. The project will expand access to affordable clean drinking water to millions of people in India. These plants will be installed at locations like railway stations, shopping malls etc.
