Senior Congress leader Jacob passes away

Senior Congress leader and former Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob passed away at the age of 90. Jacob, a former Union Minister, had also served as deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha in the 80s. Hailing from Ramapuram, Jacob had served as General Secretary and Treasurer of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee & Chairman, Kerala State Seva Dal Board and an elected member of AICC for many years.

Nerella Venumadhav passes away

Father of Indian mimicry, Nerella Venu Madhav died after a brief illness at his home in Mattewada in Warangal city in Telangana. Venumadhav served as an MLC in 1971 in the undivided Andhra Pradesh. He rose to international fame after his enthralling performance at the United Nations. He has been conferred scores of awards, including the Padma Shri in 2001.

Veteran journalist Adiraju passes away

Senior journalist and writer Adiraju Venkateswara Rao passed away in Hyderabad. He worked for several Telugu and English dailies and news agencies including Andhra Jyothi, Udayam, Deccan Chronicle, Indian Express, Himachal Times and Hindustan Samachar at Hyderabad and Delhi. He played an active role in the separate Telangana agitation in 1969.

Theatre personality Sukracharya passes away

Noted Assamese theatre personality Sukracharya Rabha, famed for his open-air theatre festival, died on 9th May. Rabha founded ‘Badungduppa’, a rural-based theatre centre at his village Rampur. Rabha promoted the Rabha culture and the language using theatre as a medium.

Shantaram Naik passes away in Goa

Former Congress MP Shantaram Naik passed away in Goa, after suffering a heart attack while being shifted to Trimurti hospital. The 73-year-old was a one-time North Goa Lok Sabha MP and a two-time Rajya Sabha MP. He successfully contested the North Goa Lok Sabha seat in 1984 and was instrumental in the passage of the Statehood Bill that consequently granted statehood to Goa on May 30, 1987.

Brazilian tennis great Maria Bueno dies

Brazilian tennis great Maria Bueno passed away after a battle with mouth cancer, according to a statement by the hospital. She was 78. Bueno was a former top-ranked player who spent most of her career on the court before the professional era. She won 19 Grand Slam titles overall, seven in singles, 11 in doubles and one in mixed doubles, between 1959 and 1966.

Bengali litterateur Indramitra passes away

Noted Bengali litterateur Arabinda Guha, who is also known by his pseudonym Indramitra, passed away. The author was a recipient of Rabindra Purashkar, instituted by the West Bengal Government, twice for his books ‘Karunasagar Vidyasagar’ and ‘Dekha Sakkhat’, a collection of poems. His first book of poems was ‘Dakkhin Nayak’ and the last one, ‘Prasthan Samay Upasthit’ was published in 2014.

India’s highest decorated general passed away

India’s most decorated General, Lt Gen Zorawar Chand Bakshi, also known as Zoru Bakshi passed away. Decorated with Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, Bakshi was instrumental in the historic capture of strategic Haji Pir pass from Pakistan army. He also took part in the World War II in the Burma in which he earned a Mention-in-Despatches.

Bernard Lewis, a preeminent scholar of Middle Eastern history whose work profoundly shaped Western views of the region has passed away. He was a Cold War hawk, a strong pro-Israel Jew, and influential among White House and Pentagon planners of the US-led 2003 invasion of Iraq. His prolific scholarship, including more than 30 books traced fault lines that define the modern Middle East.

Physicist EC George Sudarshan passed away

Famous theoretical physicist EC George Sudarshan passed away in Texas, USA.He worked in the subjects of quantum Zeno effect, optical coherence, open quantum system, non-variance groups among others. In 2007, the Kerala-born scientist was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian award.
