Raj, Haryana get notice over deforestation
NHRC issued notices to the Centre, Haryana, and Rajasthan government over the deforestation in the Aravalli hills. Media reports claimed that “massive deforestation” in the mountain range had led to “increasing dust storms and air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region”. Aravalli Range is a range of mountains running from Delhi and passing through Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

12,000-yr-old rock painting found in China
Archaeologists have confirmed that a rock painting discovered in the Lesser Khingan Mountains in China’s Heilongjiang province dates back 12,000 years. Several images painted with ochre were discovered on a rock in the city of Heihe. Preliminary studies showed that it was a scene of humans hunting, reports Xinhua news agency.

Mountain ranges discovered beneath Antarctica
Mountain ranges and valleys have been discovered by scientists deep beneath the Western Antarctic ice region. This discovery will contribute to the rising global sea levels. Three valleys were discovered by the researchers linking the two major parts of Antarctica, out of which, one is 217 miles long.

Nepal bans solo climbing on Mt Everest
Nepal banned solo climbers from scaling its mountains, including Mt Everest, in an attempt to reduce accidents & make mountaineering safer.New regulations prohibit double amputee & blind climbers from attempting to reach the Everest without a valid medical certificate.The death toll so far this season stands at 6, nearly 300 people have died since the 1st ascent to the peak made in 1953.

IAF conquers ‘Seven Summits’
After scaling of Mt Everest in 2005, IAF launched a unique and unprecedented series of mountaineering expedition ‘Mission Seven Summits’.It had the aim to fly the tricolour and the IAF flag on the highest peaks in every continent. A team comprising 5 IAF mountaineers, led by Capt RC Tripathi has successfully scaled Mt Vinson in Antarctica, thus completing the assigned Mission.

UK’s New Highest Mountain
Cartographers surveying Antarctica have discovered that Mt Hope is the tallest mountain in the British Antarctic Territory at 3,239 metres above sea level.Until now, maps showed Mt Jackson as the tallest mountain in the territory at 3,184 metres.The BAS group used a combination of elevation models built from satellite data to make the new mountain assessment.

3 FDI proposals cleared by DIPP
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion has approved 3 FDI proposals, including that of Merlin Entertainment-owned Madame Tussauds. Mountain Trail Foods, which operates the Chai Point outlets, has got approval for food retailing. And Kohler India Corp’s proposal for single-brand retail has been approved. Madame Tussauds is expected to open its first museum in India in Delhi.

Snow leopard upgraded to ‘vulnerable’
Elusive snow leopard, long considered endangered has been upgraded to vulnerable. It still face serious challenges including poaching & loss of prey in their Himalayan habitat. Snow leopards had been listed as endangered since 1972. Endangered snow leopard is found in rugged mountains of Central Asia. Snow leopards are perfectly adapted to cold, barren landscape of their high-altitude home.

Survey to remeasure Mount Everest
Nepal has begun remeasuring Mount Everest to check if the height of the world’s tallest peak was altered by a powerful earthquake that struck the nation in 2015. The official height of Mount Everest is 8,848 metres (29,029 feet), first recorded by an Indian survey in 1954. Nepal has never measured Everest on its own although the world’s highest peak lies in its territory.

Fastest ascent of Mt. Everest.
Spanish mountaineer Kilian Jornet has set the record for the fastest ascent of Mount Everest without fixed ropes or extra oxygen. He climbed Everest’s north face in just 26 hours. He started from base camp on the Tibet side of the mountain. Jornet has also set speed records for Mount Blanc and Kilimanjaro. Record holder for the fastest ascent of Everest’s north face is Hans Kammerlander.
