Brij Bhushan to be Chef de Mission

Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Saran Singh is set to be named the Chef de Mission of the Asian Games-bound Indian contingent. The four deputy Chefs de Mission are set to be be appointed. The IOA has announced a 524-member contingent of athletes for the August 18-September 2 Asian Games in Indonesia.

Men’s hockey team to be a part of TOPS

The Mission Olympic Cell of Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs has included Men’s Hockey team under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). The 18 team members will be provided with a monthly allowance of ` 50,000 each. TOPS was launched in 2015 by Ministry of Sports with National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) with the aim supporting potential medal prospects for Olympics.

Canada to command of new NATO training Centre

Canada has announced that it will assume command of a new NATO training and capacity building mission in Iraq. Canadian troops will be deployed in the Baghdad region to help Iraq build a more effective national security structure and improve training of security forces. Canada is part of the US-led coalition fighting the ISIS is contributing air power & helping in training Iraqi forces.

UK to double number of troops in Afghanistan

UK government is set to almost double the number of its troops in Afghanistan to help tackle the fragile security situation in Afghanistan. The additional forces will take part in a Nato-led training mission, called Resolute Support, to train & assist Afghan forces. They will be based in Kabul and will not be in a combat role. Britain ended combat operations in 2014.

Aadhaar must for health mission cover

The government has mandated the use of Aadhaar card for administering its massive Ayushman Bharat, or National Health Mission, that assures a ?5 lakh health cover to 10 crore families. While possessing an Aadhaar card isn’t mandatory to avail services, a proof of enrolment, or request for enrolment, is mandatory. The Ayushman Bharat is scheduled to roll out in August 2018.

Spiritual leader Dada Vaswani passes away

Dada Vaswani, spiritual leader and head of the Sadhu Vaswani mission, passed away at the age of 99 in Pune on 12th July. Dada Vaswani is known for actively promoting vegetarianism and campaigning for animal rights. Vaswani had initiated a global peace initiative,‘The Moment of Calm’. His birthday is also observed as World Forgiveness Day.

Smart Cities fellowship launched

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched Smart Cities fellowship and internship programmes. The internship and fellowship would provide the youth with an opportunity to experience various aspects of urban planning and governance. The ‘Interns’ shall be a part of the Smart Cities Mission.

Japanese mission reached asteroid Ryugu

A Japanese probe has reached an asteroid 300 million km away to collect information about the birth of the solar system and the origin of life after a more than three-year voyage through deep space. The Hayabusa2 probe successfully settled into an observation position 20 km above the Ryugu asteroid, officials from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

Swaraj inaugurates heads of missions meet

President launched the Solar Charkha Mission

27 : President, Ram Nath Kovind launched the Solar Charkha Mission which will cover 50 clusters and employ 400 to 2000 artisans. A portal of the Ministry of MSME called “Sampark” was also unveiled by the President. “Udyam Sangam” is a step forward towards consolidating synergy of all the govt initiatives relating to MSME Sector.

Jean-Pierre Lacroix to visit India

UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix will visit India and 3 other nations to thank the troop-contributing countries for their service. Lacroix will visit Bangladesh, Nepal, India, and Pakistan. India is among the largest troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions with 6,712 Indian personnel currently deployed in 9 peacekeeping missions.

Indian peacekeepers in sudan awarded UN medal

The 7 Garhwal Rifles Infantry Battalion Group was awarded the United Nations Medal for selfless service in the peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. Indian Battalion played an active and decisive role in ensuring peace and stability in Jonglei State. India is a leading contributor to the United Nations Peacekeeping missions. India contributes over 6,000 troops in 14 missions across the world.

EDMC gets SKOCH Award under solid waste mgmt

East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) won Order-of-Merit Awards from SKOCH under solid waste management category for its construction and demolition waste processing plant. The waste plant at Shastri Park processes 500 tonnes of construction waste per day & converts it into products such as bricks, stone, sand etc. The plant is in line with Swachh Bharat Mission and Smart City inititaive.

Surat Selected for best smart city award

Surat city has been awarded best city award under the Smart City Mission’s award for implementation of projects in urban environment, transport and mobility and sustainable integrated development. Bhopal and Ahmedabad have been selected as joint winners under innovative idea award category. The Ministry of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs issued the award.

Shillong get selected as 100th Smart City

Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya has been selected as 100th Smart City. Till now, 99 smart cities had been selected in four rounds of competition and with this announcement, selection of 100 cities has been completed under the Smart Cities Mission. The total proposed investment in the finally selected 100 cities would be Rs.2,05,018 crores.

KVIC adopts Jagatpur for Swachhata Abhiyaan

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has adopted Jagatpur village in Delhi for its Swachhata Abhiyaan. The sanitation drive by KVIC began with a plantation drive and ended with cleanliness drive along the bank of the Yamuna river. Under KVIC’s Swachhata Mission, the next cleanliness drive will be in Mumbai’s Juhu Beach. The current KVIC Chairman is Vinai Kumar Saxena.

11th Common Review Mission report

Shri Ashwini Choubey, Minister of Health and Family welfare released the 11th Common Review Mission (CRM) report. The report stated that the country had registered 22% reduction to 130 from 167 in Maternal Mortality rate (MMR) since 2013. The report also focussed on creation and conversion of Sub health centers as health and wellness centers (HWC) to achieve the aim of 150000 HWC by 2022.

Solar Charkha Mission to be launched

The Solar Charkha Mission of the Ministry of Micro Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), will be launched by the President, Ram Nath Kovind on June 27, 2018, in New Delhi. The Mission will cover 50 clusters and every cluster will employ 400 to 2000 artisans. The Mission has been approved by the Government of India and will disburse subsidy of Rs. 550 crore to the artisans.

10 new Swachh Places under Swachh Bharat

Ten new iconic sites have been taken up under Phase III of the flagship project Swachh Iconic Places (SIP) of the Swachh Bharat Mission. Places are: RaghavendraSwamy Temple, Hazardwari Palace, Brahma Sarovar Temple, VidurKuti, Mana village, Pangong Lake, Nagvasuki Temple, ImaKeithal/market, Sabarimala Temple and Kanvashram. The project is under Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.

3,000 additional Atal Tinkering Labs announced

NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission has selected 3,000 additional schools for the establishment of Atal Tinkering Labs. It brings the total number of ATL schools to 5,441. The selected schools shall receive a grant of Rs 20 lakh spread over the next five years to establish Atal Tinkering Labs for nurturing innovation and entrepreneurial spirit among secondary school children across India.

National Awards on Best Performing SHGs

Shri Narendra Singh conferred the National Awards on Best Performing Self Help Groups under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM). It will provide public recognition to the outstanding performance of the community institutions. As part of the Award, each SHG received a cash award of ` 1,00,000 along with a commemoration and a certificate of appreciation.

8 States to implement ‘Ayushman Bharat’

Eight States and four Union Territories have signed MoUs with the Union Health Ministry to implement the government’s ambitious national health protection mission — Ayushman Bharat. Ayushman Bharat aims to provide a cover of ` 5 lakh per family annually to 10 crore vulnerable families. The scheme will be available at the point of service in public and private empanelled hospitals.

Ganga Praharis to educate people about Ganga

A group of 427 trained volunteers, called Ganga Praharis, are reaching to every house in areas along river Ganga to educate them about the importance of protecting river’s bio-diversity. They are spread over Ganga basin states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal. They are roped-in by Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun under National Mission for Clean Ganga.

WEP signs SoI with various organisations

NITI Aayog’s Women Entrepreneurs Platform (WEP) signed 5 Statement of Intent (SoIs) with financial institutions. These are Shri Mahila Sewa Sahakari Bank Limited, Indiabulls Housing Finance Limited, SREI Infrastructure Finance Limited, Sreemanta Sankar Mission and the SEWA. The WEP was established on International Women’s Day in March 2018 to increase the number of women entrepreneurs.

NTPC adopts Charminar in Hyderabad

NTPC has adopted the iconic Charminar in Hyderabad under the ‘Swachh Iconic Places’ Projects of India. The ‘Swachh Iconic Places’ is an initiative under the Swachh Bharat Mission. It is a special clean-up initiative focused on select iconic heritage, spiritual and cultural places in the country.

Railways Organizes Workshop ‘Mission Raftar’

Ministry of Railways conducted a one day workshop “Mission Raftaar” aimed at raising the average speed of freight trains and coaching trains in New Delhi. Issues such as punctuality, rolling stock, removing bottlenecks in terms of traffic, elimination of unmanned level crossings were discussed at the workshop. Mission Raftaar’ aims at doubling the average speed of freight trains.

International day of UN Peacekeepers

International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is observed every year on May 29 to pay tribute to all men & women who have served & continue to serve in UN peacekeeping operations. Theme of International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2018 is UN Peacekeepers: 70 Years of Service & Sacrifice. So far India has taken part in 43 Peacekeeping missions with a total contribution exceeding 180,000 troops.

Akshay launches ad campaign for Swachh Bharat

Akshay Kumar launched an advertisement campaign for the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen). The campaign was launched at a Collectors Convention for Toilet Technology. The campaign focuses on promoting the twin pit toilet technology in rural India. The advertisement campaign launched is an effort, supported by the World Bank.

Airtel Payments Bank has announced the appointment of Anubrata Biswas as its Managing Director & CEO. Anubrata will be responsible for driving Airtel Payments Bank’s mission of taking convenient and innovative digital banking services to the doorstep of every Indian. Airtel Payments Bank was the first payments bank to start operations in India.

‘My MP Rojgar Portal’ launched

Madhya Pradesh CM, Shivraj Singh Chauhan launched the “My MP Rojgar Portal” in Bhopal under ‘Pahal’, which is a Mukhyamantri Career Counselling programme. This portal will provide jobs to youth as per their skills, interests and educational qualifications. The portal has been developed under Youth Empowerment Mission by the Madhya Pradesh Skill Development and Employment Generation Board.

Twin spacecraft to track Earth’s water cycle

A joint U.S./German space mission to track the global water cycle was successfully lifted off on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On, GRACE-FO, is a joint mission by NASA & German Research Centre for Geosciences. GRACE-FO will monitor the movement of mass around the earth by measuring where & how the moving mass changes Earth’s gravitational pull.

3rd Mission Innovation Ministerial in Sweden

23 : India will be participating in the 3rd Mission Innovation Ministerial that will be held at Malmo-Sweden. Mission Innovation is a global platform of 23 countries & EU aimed at accelerating clean energy innovations through enhanced government funding, public-private sector partnership& enhanced global cooperation. NMCG asks DDA to expedite “Asita”

National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) inspected the Yamuna River Front Development (RFD) project being implemented by Delhi Development Authority. Yamuna RFD project aims to restore, revive and rejuvenate the river’s floodplains and make them accessible to the people of Delhi. A special focus of the project is on reviving the river’s biodiversity. Asita generally means River Yamuna.

Mangaluru is the best in waste management

The Union government has selected Mangaluru as “India’s best city in solid waste management”. It was selected under the categories of cities having a population between three lakh and 10 lakh under Swachhata Survekshan 2018. The survey by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs assessed 4,203 urban local bodies under the aegis of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban).

4 states ink MoUs with Centre on health

The states of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Uttarakhand agreed to implement the ambitious national health protection mission (NHPM). NHPM aims to provide an annual coverage of Rs 5 lakh per family. The scheme will target poor, deprived rural families and identified occupational categories of urban workers’ families. It will be cashless and paperless access to services.

Top 30 innovations showcased at marathon

To identify India’s best student innovators, Atal Tinkering Labs of the Atal Innovation Mission of NITI Aayog organized an Atal Tinkering Marathon. It was a 6-month long challenge across 6 different areas, namely, clean energy, water resources, waste management, healthcare, smart mobility and agri-tech. The goal of the student innovator programme is to test the innovations in the community.

First integrated smart cities control centre

Madhya Pradesh has launched country’s first Integrated Control & Command Centre for all the 7 smart cities of the state in Bhopal. The centre would enable authorities to monitor the status of various smart civic amenities in real-time through the sensors connected to it. Smart City Mission, is an urban renewal program by the govt that aims to develop 100 smart cities across the country.

Loan agreement with WB for POSHAN Abhiyaan

India has signed a loan deal worth $200 million with World Bank for National Nutrition Mission (POSHAN Abhiyaan). The loan would help Government in achieving its goal of reducing stunting in children 0-6 years of age from 38.4% to 25% by 2022. POSHAN scheme launched by PM Modi on March 8, 2018, aims to ensure holistic development & adequate nutrition for pregnant women, mothers & children.

Apex Conference for the CEOs of Smart Cities

Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs, Hardeep Puri, inaugurated the ‘First Apex Conference for the CEOs of Smart Cities ‘in Bhopal on 8th May. The two-day conference is being organised for providing a platform for cross-learning and knowledge sharing among the Smart City CEOs. The Union Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for implementing the smart city mission.

NITI Aayog seeks World Bank’s help

The NITI Aayog has sought World Bank’s assistance to provide it with information and expertise on fraud detection and prevention. It will ensure no embezzlement of funds takes place in the Centre’s ambitious Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM). The World Bank assistance is being taken as it has expertise from its international experience.

Indian naval commanders conference

Indian Navy commanders will discuss the country’s maritime security and review the naval force’s mission-based deployments in the Indian Ocean Region. The commanders would discuss the optimal utilisation of the Navy’s share of the defence budget. The conference would be addressed by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The conference starts on May 8 and will conclude on May 11.

A new nuclear reactor for space

NASA has developed a new kind of reactor to be used for space exploration missions. NASA’s Kilopower project works to build the kind of technology that could be used for an affordable fission nuclear power system so astronauts can have longer trips to planets. Kilopower is a small, lightweight fission power system that can deliver 10 kilowatts of electrical power.

‘Go to Village’ mission launched in Manipur

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh launched ‘Go to Village’ mission throughout the state of Manipur. The mission was launched on May 2 in 60 villages of all the 60 Assembly constituencies. The mission is aimed at identifying the eligible and deserving beneficiaries in every corner of the state and delivering government services at their doorstep.

NASA to track Earth’s ice and water

NASA is gearing up for the upcoming launch of its Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On (GRACE-FO) mission. The mission will map changes in water and ice around the world by detecting variations in Earth’s gravity & it involves 2 identical spacecraft that will orbit the Earth. The mission is a joint project between NASA and the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences, Germany.

NASA mission to study heart of Mars

NASA is set to launch Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) on May 5. InSight will be the first mission to peer deep beneath the Martian surface, studying the planet’s interior by measuring its heat output and listening for marsquakes. It will use the seismic waves generated by mars quakes to develop a map of the planet’s deep interior.

Swachh Bharat Summer Internship commenced

The Swachh Bharat Summer Internship commenced from 1st May. The programme aims to engage millions of youngsters across the country, to encourage them to contribute to the Swachh Bharat Mission. Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in association with Ministry of Human Resource Development and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has launched a novel and first of its kind initiative.

World Bank loan for Biopharma Mission

The government has secured a loan of about Rs. 1,600 crore from the World Bank to develop new vaccines, medical devices and medicines.The money will be disbursed over five years and is part of the Department of Biotechnology-led National Biopharma Mission. The goal is to have 6 to 10 new products in the next five years and it will create a slew of jobs.

National Bamboo Mission restructured

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National Bamboo Mission under National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture.The mission is to ensure holistic development of the bamboo sector. The Mission will focus on the development of bamboo in limited states where it has social, commercial and economical advantage, particularly in the North Eastern region.

NITI Aayog launched Atal New India Challenge

The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) under the NITI Aayog launched the Atal New India Challenge on April 26.Under the Atal New India Challenge, AIM will invite prospective innovators/MSMEs/start-ups to design market-ready products. Applicants showing capability, intent and potential to productize technologies will be awarded grants up to ` 1 crore.

NASA to study affect of phytoplankton

NASA is conducting a study of the world’s largest phytoplankton bloom in the North Atlantic to see how the tiny sea creatures influence the climate in every season.The name of the mission is The North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES). NAAMES will study how phytoplanktons give rise to small organic particles that leave the ocean and end up in the atmosphere.

China launched Remote sensing satellites

China has launched the first group of China’s Yaogan-31 remote sensing satellites into space on 10th April.The satellites were carried by a Long March-4C rocket. The mission also sent a micro nanotechnology experiment satellite into orbit. The satellites will be used for electromagnetic environment surveys and other technology tests.

First flight to Sun to launch in July

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe — humanity’s first mission to the Sun — is undergoing final preparations.The mission is scheduled for launch on July 31, 2018. Parker Solar will orbit directly through the solar atmosphere – the corona – closer to the surface than any human-made object has ever gone.

NASA set to build quiet supersonic planes

NASA is set to develop an ‘X-plane’ designed to fly faster than the speed of sound without producing the noise typical of supersonic flights.The X-plane’s mission is to provide crucial data that could enable commercial supersonic passenger air travel over land. The X-plane makes a quiet sonic boom due to its unique shape and design.

NASA test launches Mars landing parachute

A supersonic parachute that will help NASA missions to land on Mars, was successfully launched into the sky.The Advanced Supersonic Parachute Inflation Research Experiment (ASPIRE) was launched on March 31 from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in the US. The test was meant to mimic the conditions that a spacecraft would experience during a red planet entry, descent and landing.

SpaceX launches 10 satellites

SpaceX has confirmed successful deployment of all 10 communications satellites to low-Earth orbit. The Iridium-NEXT satellites were launched for satellite operator Iridium Communi-cations. The Iridium-5 NEXT Mission marked the fifth set of 10 satellites that SpaceX has launched for its customer‘s Iridium NEXT global satellite constellation.

NASA’s mission to study ‘heart’ of Mars

NASA is all set to send the first-ever mission dedicated to explore the deep interior of Mars. A stationary lander known as ?InSight? will place a seismometer, a device that measures quakes, on the soil of Mars. It will be launched on 5th May. InSight or the Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport mission, carries sensitive instruments to gather data.

Central task force on AI recommends N-AIM

A central task force on Artificial Intelligence (AI) has suggested creating a National Artificial Intelligence Mission (N-AIM) will serve as a nodal agency for coordinating AI related activities in the country. The task force was set up by the Union Commerce Ministry in August 2017. The task force members include those from government and the private sector.

NASA to focus on Earth?s frozen regions

NASA will launch two new satellite missions to know more about the Earth‘s ice sheets, glaciers, sea ice, snow and permafrost. NASA and the German Research Centre for Geosciences are scheduled to launch the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On (GRACE-FO) mission in this spring. And in autumn, NASA is scheduled to launch the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2).

NITI Aayog Signs SOI with SAP

NITI Aayog‘s Atal Innovation Mission signed a Statement of Intent with SAP to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. SAP will adopt 100 Atal Tinkering Laboratories for 5 years to nurture the science, technology, engineering and maths learning among school children. This will enable students to learn advanced topics relevant to digital transformation and the Internet of Things.

Indu Bhushan was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Centres ambitious Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission (ABNHPM). He is the Director General of East Asia Department, Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila, Philippines. The ABNHPM has the benefit cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year.

Mission Sambhav launched in Assam

Assam Chief Minister launched the ‘Mission Sambhav’ campaign, which aims at spreading the message of toilet construction in 33 districts of the state. The central theme of the campaign is to reach out to more than one lakh families without a toilet, on a single day. The scheme aims to promote mass mobilisation through public representatives, local units of security forces, NGOs, and colleges

Chandrayaan-2 launch postponed

The launch of India‘s second lunar mission ‘Chandrayaan-2’ has been postponed from April to October 2018 as the experts have suggested some tests. Chandrayaan-2, a totally indigenous mission costing about Rs.800 crore, would orbit around the moon. It will collect scientific information on lunar topography, mineralogy, elemental abundance, lunar exosphere & signatures of hydroxyl & water-ice.

Govt to declare 2018 as Year of Millets

The government has decided to declare 2018 as ‘National Year of Millets’. This has been done to boost the cultivation of millets like ragi and jowar on a mission mode to achieve nutritional security. Millet cultivation has declined due to change in dietary habits and unavailability of millets.

One app, 1000 services: mKeralam

Kerala government has launched ‘mKeralam’, an app that will serve as a single window for accessing thousands of government services. The app has been developed by the Kerala State Information Technology Mission, and will initially offer 100 citizen-oriented public services of 20 departments. The services accessible via mKeralam are available through ‘www.kerala.gov.in’.

Cabinet approves Ayushman Bharat – NHPM

The Union Cabinet has approved the launch of a new Centrally Sponsored Ayushman Bharat -National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM). The scheme has the benefit cover of Rs. 5 lakh per family per year. The target beneficiaries of the proposed scheme will be more than 10 crore families belonging to poor and vulnerable population based on SECC database.

Kerala to get tribal instructors for literacy

In a first, Kerala government will rope in qualified tribal instructors to impart literacy in their respective settlements in a bid to improve literacy rates among tribal populations. The instructors will teach people who are above 15 years of age, Director of Kerala literacy mission PS Sreekala said. Around 370 instructors for 100 villages have been appointed for the initiative.

Over 2.55 crore children vaccinated

The four phases of Mission Indradhanush has reached 2.55 crore children and around 68.7 lakh pregnant women in 528 districts across the country.MI is a vaccination programme to ensure that children under the age of 2 and pregnant women are immunised against seven life-threatening diseases. The word represents 7 vaccines that are currently included in the Universal Immunisation Programme.

EU Launches Election Observation Mission

The European Union Election Observation Mission was officially launched to monitor the general and provincial polls in Nepal which are scheduled for November 26 and December 7. Around 100 election observers from member countries of the EU have been deployed to oversee the polls in the Himalayan nation. The EU has allocated 3.5 million euro for the entire election observation process.

The government has allocated Rs 5,000 crore for the growth of Department of AYUSH and launched an independent National AYUSH Mission aimed at capacity building for the sector. For creating awareness about Ayurveda, the Ministry is considering to observe Ayurveda Day. Independent National AYUSH Mission is launched aiming capacity building for the sector. The mission will ensure creation of a centre of excellence for Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy independently.
