Nelson Mandela International Day 2018

Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day in honor of Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s 1st black president which is celebrated each year on 18 July. The day was 1st celebrated as UN Mandela Day on 18 July 2010 and 2018 marks the 100th birth anniversary. Mandela is remembered for his anti-apartheid activities and fight against poverty and promoting justice for all.

Senior Congress leader Jacob passes away

Senior Congress leader and former Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob passed away at the age of 90. Jacob, a former Union Minister, had also served as deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha in the 80s. Hailing from Ramapuram, Jacob had served as General Secretary and Treasurer of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee & Chairman, Kerala State Seva Dal Board and an elected member of AICC for many years.

Georgia’s PM Giorgi Kvirikashvili Resigns

Giorgi Kvirikashvili, prime minister of Georgia, has announced his resignation amid a disagreement with Bidzina Ivanishvili, the leader of the ruling party. Kvirikashvili, 50, has been the country’s prime minister since 2015. The prime minister’s resignation comes amid growing popular discontent over his government’s handling of the economy and after mass protests in recent months.

Leaders sign Qingdao Declaration

10 : The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit concluded with the adoption of the Qingdao declaration. The declaration calls for implementing the three-year plan to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism. It also calls for the implementation of the treaty on long-term good neighbourliness, friendship and co-operation.

Sushma Swaraj to visit South Africa

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has left for South Africa on a five-day visit. During the visit, Mrs Swaraj is expected to have meetings with top leadership of South Africa. The Minister will participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting on 4th and chair the IBSA Foreign Ministers Meeting.

H D Kumaraswamy sworn in as Karnataka CM

JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy has been sworn in as Karnataka’s 24th chief minister. This will be Kumarawamy’s second term as the chief minister of Karnataka since 2007, when he last held the post for 20 months. G Parameshwara, the state Congress chief and the party’s Dalit face, was sworn in as the deputy chief minister.

According to the study “World Leaders on Facebook” released by Burson Cohn & Wolfe PM Modi is the most ‘liked’ world leader on Facebook. With 43.2 million likes, Prime Minister Modi is almost double of USA President Donald Trump, who has 23.1 Million likes. Modi also has the second highest number of interactions and interaction rate behind Trump.

Ambani in World’s Greatest Leaders’ list

Richest Indian Mukesh Ambani has been named by Fortune magazine as the World’s Greatest Leaders of 2018.Ambani was ranked No.24 behind likes of South Korean President Mon Jae-in, Chinese vice premier Liu He and French President Emmanuel Macron. Ambani’s ‘Jio-fication’ in less than two years has brought mobile data to the masses and has completely upended the country’s telecom market.
