Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day in honor of Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s 1st black president which is celebrated each year on 18 July. The day was 1st celebrated as UN Mandela Day on 18 July 2010 and 2018 marks the 100th birth anniversary. Mandela is remembered for his anti-apartheid activities and fight against poverty and promoting justice for all.

Senior Congress leader Jacob passes away

Senior Congress leader and former Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob passed away at the age of 90. Jacob, a former Union Minister, had also served as deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha in the 80s. Hailing from Ramapuram, Jacob had served as General Secretary and Treasurer of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee & Chairman, Kerala State Seva Dal Board and an elected member of AICC for many years.

Giorgi Kvirikashvili, prime minister of Georgia, has announced his resignation amid a disagreement with Bidzina Ivanishvili, the leader of the ruling party. Kvirikashvili, 50, has been the country’s prime minister since 2015. The prime minister’s resignation comes amid growing popular discontent over his government’s handling of the economy and after mass protests in recent months.

Leaders sign Qingdao Declaration

10 : The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit concluded with the adoption of the Qingdao declaration. The declaration calls for implementing the three-year plan to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism. It also calls for the implementation of the treaty on long-term good neighbourliness, friendship and co-operation.

Sushma Swaraj to visit South Africa

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has left for South Africa on a five-day visit. During the visit, Mrs Swaraj is expected to have meetings with top leadership of South Africa. The Minister will participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting on 4th and chair the IBSA Foreign Ministers Meeting.

H D Kumaraswamy sworn in as Karnataka CM

JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy has been sworn in as Karnataka’s 24th chief minister. This will be Kumarawamy’s second term as the chief minister of Karnataka since 2007, when he last held the post for 20 months. G Parameshwara, the state Congress chief and the party’s Dalit face, was sworn in as the deputy chief minister.

According to the study “World Leaders on Facebook” released by Burson Cohn & Wolfe PM Modi is the most ‘liked’ world leader on Facebook. With 43.2 million likes, Prime Minister Modi is almost double of USA President Donald Trump, who has 23.1 Million likes. Modi also has the second highest number of interactions and interaction rate behind Trump.

Romanian PM Mihai Tudose Resigns

Romania’s left-wing Prime Minister Mihai Tudose resigned after losing the backing of his party.He handed in his resignation after senior members of the ruling Social Democrats (PSD) voted to withdraw their support at a leadership meeting. PSD head Dragnea pushed out Tudose’s predecessor Sorin Grindeanu as prime minister in a no-confidence vote in June 2017.

Abdul Mannan Hossain passed away

16 : Former Murshidabad MP and senior Trinamool Congress leader Abdul Mannan Hossain died at Belle vue clinic due to age-related problems, in Kolkata. He was 65 years old. He was a Congress leader and a two-term MP of the party from 2004-2014. Earlier he was an MLA of Congress from 1987. He joined All India Trinamool Congress in 2014 after he had differences with the Congress’ state leadership.

APEC summit held in Vietnam

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting was held on 10th and 11th November, 2017 in Da Nang, Vietnam. Theme of this meeting was ‘Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future’. Leaders of 21 Pacific Rim countries attended this meeting. This was the first APEC meeting for several leaders.

First woman to senior government post

A Saudi woman has been named to a senior government post for the first time, shortly after a ban on women drivers was lifted. Eman Al-Ghamdi was appointed as the assistant mayor of Al Khubar governorate. Al-Ghamdi was given the post “as part of plan to boost the number of females in leadership positions in line with Vision 2030.

Kerala cabinet appoints Achuthanandan head of administrative reforms panel

The Kerala cabinet has decided to appoint veteran CPI-M leader V.S Achuthanandan as the chairman of the Kerala Administrative Reforms Commission with cabinet rank. Former chief secretaries Neela Gangadharan and C.P Nair will be the other members of the three-member panel headed by Achuthanandan. The Kerala Assembly had earlier passed an amendment bill to pave the way for his appointment.

30th January observed as Martyrs’ Day

The government observed Martyrs’ Day on the 67th death anniversary of the Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi and those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for the country’s freedom. The day is remembered in the living memory of all the freedom fighters who lost their lives for handing our the much needed independence. Facebook is the leader of social media

The findings of a survey by a US-based global think tank Pew Research Centre that involved 1,597 internet users revealed that 71 per cent of US adults were hooked to Facebook in 2014. The figure up significantly from 63 percent in 2013, Forbes magazine reported. For micro-blogging site Twitter, the percentage of users logging in daily decreased from 46 percent in 2013 to 36 percent last year.
