South Africa launches powerful new telescope

South Africa has unveiled the 64-dish MeerKAT radio telescope, slated to be the world’s largest and most powerful telescope on its completion in 2030. Built for $330 million, MeerKAT will be integrated into an array of 3,000 dishes. The telescope is being built by an international consortium, including Australia, Britain, Canada, China, India, Italy, New Zealand, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Kochi Metro launches India’s 1st AC dormitory

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) will open India’s first exquisite air-conditioned bed space dormitory. The fully air-conditioned rooms are equipped with locker facility, free WiFi, round-the-clock check-in and check-out facility and security cameras. It was inaugurated by Kochi’s Mayor Soumini Jain. The current governor of Kerala is P. Sathasivam.

India records highest number of IPOs globally

Indian exchanges recorded the highest IPO activity as the country saw 90 IPO launches that raised $3.9 billion. The exchanges account for 16% of the total issues in the first half of 2018. Out of 90 deals that listed, 15 listed both on NSE & BSE result in 93% of the total proceeds. The financial sector, infrastructure and consumer companies with strong growth continue to boost IPO activity.

SAARC launches social enterprise programme

SAARC Development Fund launches a social enterprise development programme (SEDP) to fund 80 entities annually across eight-member states. SDF was established in April 2010 and its council comprises finance ministers of these eight SAARC countries.The SDF CEO is Sunil Motiwal SDF has already committed $73.74 million for social window projects out of which it has disbursed $47 million.

Gujarat launches policy to reuse waste water

The Gujarat government unveiled its ‘Reuse of Treated Waste Water Policy’ which aims to reduce the state’s dependence on fresh water sources like the Narmada river. The policy will promote the use of treated waste water and will see the setting up of sewage treatment plants. The treated water would be used in industrial units, thermal power plants, gardening and in the construction sector.

PM Modi launches Eastern Peripheral Expressway

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first highway to be lit by solar power in Bagpat, Uttar Pradesh. Eastern Peripheral Expressway is 135 km long, stretching from Kundli on NH 1 to Palwal on NH 2. The highway has provisions of rainwater harvesting on every 500 metres on both sides and would showcase 36 national monuments and 40 fountains. It has been built in a record time of 17 months.

NASA to fly a helicopter on Mars

12 : NASA will send a small helicopter to Mars, in the first test of a heavier-than-air aircraft on another planet. The Mars helicopter will be bundled with the US space agency’s Mars rover when it launches in 2020. The helicopter is specifically designed to fly in the atmosphere of Mars, which is 100 times thinner than Earth’s.

BrahMos to attain 76% localisation in 6 mths

BrahMos, the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile, will be achieving 75% localisation in the next six months. As of today 65% of the value (in BrahMos) is created in India. The Quad launcher is designed for supersonic cruise missiles in an inclined configuration on-board our navy ships. The launcher provides superior firepower as compared to the twin cannister.

Kotak launches Free Intraday Trading facility

Kotak Securities has unveiled ‘Free Intraday Trading’ facility, allowing investors to trade intra-day without paying brokerage charges. Investors can do intra-day trades across cash, future and options segments at an annual subscription of Rs. 999. Intra-day trading refers to trades in which investors buy and sell the shares within the same trading session.

Former PM launches economist Rao’s book

Former PM Manmohan Singh recently released a book by Economist C H. Hanumantha Rao.The book is titled ‘My Journey from Marxism-Leninism to Nehruvian Socialism’. C H Hanumantha Rao was the former Planning Commission and Finance Commission member.
