Hockey India sacks Roelant Oltmans

Hockey India has sacked national coach Roelant Oltmans after a string of unimpressive outings at the international level. David John will be in charge till a suitable replacement is found for a smooth transition of the men’s team. The decision was taken during the three-day meeting of the Hockey India High Performance and Development Committee.

India beats Austria

17 : Ramandeep Singh and Chinglensana Singh Kangujam struck twice to guide the Indian men’s hockey team to a sensational 4-3 win over Austria in their final encounter of the Europe Tour. After two successive wins against World No.4 The Netherlands, India made a steady start against Austria. The match was held in Amstelveen, the Netherlands.

East Bengal honours Dhanraj Pillay

2 : Former India hockey captain Dhanraj Pillay was honoured by East Bengal football club on its foundation day with its highest award, Bharat Gaurav. He made his debut in 1989 with the national team and in a career spanning over 15 years he made 339 appearances and scored 170 goals. He currently serves as the manager of the team and is a member of ad hoc committee of Indian Hockey Federation.

Hockey India League cancelled for 2018

The 6th edition of Hockey India League has been postponed to 2019 by Hockey India. This comes as the dates in 2018 clashes with the Indoor World Cup, which may bar foreign players’ participation in it. This will only be a temporary discontinuation and HIL will return in 2019. HIL in past 5 years has given rise to players who have gone on to make a name for themselves in world hockey.

Dhanraj Pillay to get Bharat Gaurav

Former India hockey captain Dhanraj Pillay will be awarded with East Bengal football club’s highest honour “Bharat Gaurav” on their foundation day. He played a huge role in reviving the Indian team and performed brilliantly during his 15-year career. He also received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for his performance in 1999-2000 and was awarded Padma Shri and civilian award in 2000.

India’s biggest win over Pakistan

India demolished Pakistan 7-1 to register their third consecutive victory and seal a place in the quarter-finals of the Hockey World League Semi-Final. This was was India’s biggest over Pakistan, bettering the 7-4 effort against arch-rivals in 2003 Champions Trophy and 2010 Commonwealth Games. This was India’s 56th win over Pakistan in the 168th match between the two nations.

Sweden wins ice hockey world title.

Sweden won the 2017 Ice Hockey World Championship by defeating Canada in a dramatic penalty shootout. Sweden were twice on target in the shootout, while the Canadians failed to score. It is Sweden’s 10th world title. Sweden won the gold while Canadians had to settle for silver. Russia by defeating Finland was able to clinch to bronze medal.

Sardar Singh for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna

Hockey India has recommended senior player and former captain Sardar Singh for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, India’s highest sporting honour. Other players SV Sunil, Dharamvir Singh and Deepika have been recommended for the Arjuna Award. Coaches Sandeep Sangwan and Romesh Pathania have been recommended for the Dronacharya Award.

India lose to Aus in Azlan Shah Cup

India lost 1-3 against defending champions Australia in a preliminary league match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament. Australia is Nine-time winners of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. Australia now have seven points from three outings, while last year’s runner-up India are on four points after three matches.

Sultan Azlan Shah Cup tournament begins

Sultan of Azlan Shah Cup Men’s Hockey tournament begins in Ipoh, Malaysia. Six nations – India, Malaysia, Australia, Great Britain, Japan and New Zealand – are taking part in the 8-day tournament which will be held in a round-robin format. In the opener, India will take on Great Britain Pakistan is not playing in the competition this year.
