Harjinder Singh to be ‘Chef de Mission’

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) appointed Harjinder Singh as the Chef De Mission for the 23rd Winter Olympic Games.Games will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea in February 2018. Harjinder Singh is at present the General Secretary in the Ice Hockey Association of India.

Batra elected unopposed as IOA President

International Hockey Federation chief Narinder Batra was elected unopposed as the president of Indian Olympic Association. Batra thus has become one of the few sports administrators who heads an important international federation as well as a National Olympic Committee. Batra’s election to the post was a mere formality after Asian Tennis Federation President Anil Khanna withdrew from the race.

India retain bronze medal at HWL

India have reclaimed the bronze medal at the Hockey World League (HWL) Final tournament.In the third-fourth place classification match at Bhubaneswar, they defeated Germany 2-1.A penalty corner conversion by Harmanpreet Singh in the 54th minute sealed the win and the third place for the Indians.India had also won the bronze in the last edition of the tournament in Raipur in 2015.

Aus win gold in Hockey World League

Australia defeated Rio Olympics champions Argentina 2-1 in the final of the Hockey World League Final to win gold at Bhubaneswar.Goals from Blake Govers and Jeremy Hayward helped the defending champions beat Argentina.By virtue of their win, Australia replaced Argentina at the top spot in team’s rankings.

FIH Congress to be held in New Delhi

46th Congress of the International Hockey Federation will be held in New Delhi from October 30 to November 3 next year.It will be the first FIH Congress under the former Hockey India chief Narinder Batra who took over the reins of world hockey from Spaniard Leandro Negre.The biennial event will run for 4 days & will comprise meetings, social events, networking opportunities & presentations

Indian team lift Asia Cup title

The Indian women’s hockey team edged out China 5-4 in the final of the Asia Cup 2017 to clinch the gold medal after 13 long years. With this victory, the Indian women’s hockey team have qualified for next year’s World Cup. This is India’s second title in the history of the tournament, with their first top-placed finish coming in the year 2004.

Indian Junior Team won Bronze in Hockey

Indian Junior Men’s Hockey team beats host Malaysia 4-0 in the Bronze medal match of the 7th Sultan of Johor Cup 2017. Mtach was held at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium, in Malaysia. Goals from Vishal Antil (15’, 25’), Vivek Prasad (11’) and Shilanand Lakra (21’) were enough for India to finish their tournament with the Bronze medal.

India win hockey Asia Cup

India beats Malaysia by 2-1 in the finale to win the 2017 Asia Cup Hockey tournament held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This was India’s third continental title. Ramandeep Singh scored the opening goal in the third minute while Lalit Upadhyay extended India’s lead in the 29th minute of the game. Lalit Upadhyay won the goal of the match award while Akashdeep Singh was adjudged the Man of the match.

Hockey steps down from IOC board

Scandal-tainted Olympic official Patrick Hockey has resigned his position on the International Olympic Committee executive board with immediate effect. Hockey was detained by Brazilian police in a dramatic raid at his hotel and was held in connection with an an illegal ticket sales scheme. The vacant post will be filled by election during the forthcoming IOC Session in Lima.

Marijne named chief coach of hockey team

Holland’s Sjoerd Marijne has taken over as the head coach of the India men’s hockey team following the sacking of fellow Dutchman Roelant Oltmans. Marijne, who was working as the chief coach of the India women’s team since February this year, has been asked to take over the men’s team. Marijne has previously served as the chief coach of Dutch women’s team.
