UK tops global ranking of nations’ soft power

UK has topped an annual global ranking of nations’ soft power, with France placed 2nd on the list of 30 countries which does not feature India. The 2018 ‘Soft Power 30’ index, ranked Germany as third followed by US. India does not figure on the list, but this year’s report also features a chapter dedicated solely to Asia, listing 10 countries in the region, ranking India’s soft power as 8th.

India signed JDI with Germany in Aviation

28 : The Cabinet signed a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) between India and Germany on Cooperation in the field of Civil Aviation. The Declaration will lead to the promotion of the effective and efficient development of air transport between India and Germany. It would cover Aviation Safety and Air Traffic Management, Helicopter Emergency Medical Services and Training and Skills Development.

Deepika won gold at Salt Lake World Cup

Archer Deepika Kumari won her first individual gold medal in six years at the Salt Lake World Cup following a 7-3 win over Germany’s Michelle Kroppen in the recurve final. The last time she won at a stage event on the international circuit goes back to Antalya in 2012. She had won a gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth games in the women’s individual recurve event.

7th OPEC international Seminar

The Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Skill development & Entreprenuership Dharmendra Pradhan to participate in the 7th OPEC International seminar as a special guest in Vienna, Austria on 19th June. The visit is crucial as global oil prices are at highest since 2014 and are impacting India’s increasing economy. He will also be visiting Germany and will take part in a yoga event.

Scientists seek to find mass of ghost particle

Researchers in Germany with Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment have started collecting data to determine the mass of the universe’s lightest particle- neutrino. Those are sometimes called “ghost particles” because they’re so difficult to detect. KATRIN measures the neutrino mass in a model-independent way via ultrahigh precision measurements of the kinematics of electrons from beta-decay.

UNSC elects 5 members for two-year term

The United Nations General Assembly voted to elect Germany, Belgium, South Africa, the Dominican Republic and Indonesia for a two-year term in the Security Council starting on Jan. 1, 2019. The council is the only U.N. body that can make legally binding decisions and has the power to impose sanctions and authorize the use of force. The General Assembly elects five new members in a year.

California’s economy is world’s 5th biggest

California’s economy has surpassed that of the United Kingdom to become the world’s fifth largest economy. California’s GDP of $2.7 trillion has overtaken the UK’s $2.6 trillion. California’s economic output is now surpassed only by the total GDP of the United States, China, Japan and Germany. All economic sectors except agriculture contributed to California’s higher GDP.

India slips 3 notches in FDI Confidence Index

India’s ranking fell three places to 11th spot in global consultants AT Kearney’s Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index 2018. India remained the second highest emerging market on the Index. India fell out of the top 10 for the first time since 2015. The index was topped by U.S followed by Canada and Germany at the second and third position respectively.

Christine appointed as envoy on Myanmar by UN

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Christine Schraner Burgener of Switzerland as his new special envoy on Myanmar.Burgener was the Ambassador of Switzerland to Germany since 2015. From 2009 to 2015, she served as Ambassador to Thailand and led efforts to mediate between the two sides in the violence that erupted in Thailand in 2010.

India pips Germany to be No. 4 car market

India has become the fourth-largest passenger vehicle (PV) market globally for the first time ever, unseating Germany, in January and February 2018.With sales of 5,60,806 units in the first two months of calendar 2018, India overtook Germany’s tally of 5,31,100 units. India is behind China, US and Japan. Germany in the 5th position, followed by Brazil and France

Colonies of penguins discovered in Antarctica

‘Mega-colonies’ of over 15 lakh Adélie penguins have been discovered on Danger Islands near the Antarctic peninsula. Prompted by satellite images, scientists mounted on an expedition and used on-the-ground counts and drones to reveal 7,51,527 pairs of penguins. Researchers have called for protecting the area, five times larger than Germany, as it was seemingly unaffected by climate change.

New record for fastest distance measurements

Germany and France-based researchers have recorded 100 million distance values per second, demonstrating the fastest distance measurement so far.The team studied a bullet travelling at 540 kmph with micrometre accuracy using laser-based LIDAR (light detection and ranging). This technology could be used in autonomous navigation and 3D cameras.

India signed a MoU with Germany to develop modules for providing urban basic services and housing for smart cities.The MoU would develop and apply concepts for sustainable urban development providing urban basic services and housing in select cities as well as smart cities in India.GIZ would contribute up to 8 million for the project which would run for a period of three years.

The first two-day Global Investment Summit has been organized in Assam.The summit emphasises on promoting investments in the state and the North East.The conference was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Investor’s from Bhutan, Bangladesh, Germany and Japan as well as ASEAN countries will attend the summit.

New round of UN climate change talks

A new round of UN climate change talks will start in Bonn, Germany. More than 190 countries and territories will take part in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change(COP23), first since US decided to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. Delegates will negotiate in order to come up with concrete rules for the agreement by the next round in 2018.

Merkel wins fourth term

Angela Merkel is set for a 4th term as Germany’s chancellor after her centre right CDU/CSU won a projected 33% of the vote in federal election. Her conservative CDU/CSU bloc has seen its worst result in almost 70 years but will remain the largest in parliament. Far-right AfD stunned the establishment by finishing third & entering parliament for the first time with 13.5% of the vote.

Least and Most Stressful Cities Ranking

According to 2017 Global Least & Most Stressful Cities Ranking, Stuttgart is the least stressed out city across the globe, with 4 of top 10 relaxing cities situated in Germany. Luxembourg stood at 2nd spot while Hanover was at 3rd place in the ranking. Of the 150 cities ranked, Delhi ranked 142, while Bengaluru stood at 130 and Mumbai at 138. The most stressed city in the list is Baghdad.

World’s most powerful X-ray laser

The world’s largest and powerful X-ray laser- European X-ray Free Electron Laser presented in Hamburg, Germany. The XEFL is series of 3.4-kilometer tunnels up to 38 meters underground near the city of Hamburg. It took 8 years to build 1.5-billion-euro facility. XFEL is the world’s third major X-ray laser facility

Germany to fine social media firms

Germany’s cabinet has approved a plan to fine social networks up to €50m if they fail to remove hateful postings quickly. Law gives social media networks 24 hrs to delete or block obviously criminal content and 7 days to deal with less clear-cut cases. Social networks will also have to publish a report every 6 months detailing how many complaints they received and how they dealt with them.

Angela Merkel to Stand for Fourth Term

Germany’s centre-right Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced that she will run for a fourth term in office. General elections are expected in Germany next year. Mrs Merkel’s poll ratings have slipped since the height of her popularity but she retains wide support. The chancellor, who has been in office since 2005, is being challenged by the populist right-wing AfD party.
