Senior Congress leader Jacob passes away

Senior Congress leader and former Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob passed away at the age of 90. Jacob, a former Union Minister, had also served as deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha in the 80s. Hailing from Ramapuram, Jacob had served as General Secretary and Treasurer of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee & Chairman, Kerala State Seva Dal Board and an elected member of AICC for many years.

Rajat Sharma becomes DDCA president

Renowned journalist Rajat Sharma has been elected as the President of Delhi & District Cricket Association. Sharma surpassed former World Cup winning Indian cricketer Madan Lal by 517 votes to register his win. Sharma is currently the Chairman and Editor in Chief of India TV and has been awarded Padma Bhushan by Government of India in 2015 in the field of Literature and Education.

Andres Manuel elected as Mexico’s President

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has been elected as Mexico’s President with over 53% of the vote, according to the country’s electoral commission. Obrador, who has won the presidency at the third attempt, promised to tackle violence and wipe out corruption. The 64-year-old former Mexico City mayor will formally take power on December 1.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw elected to MIT board

India’s biotech queen Kiran Mazumdar Shaw has been elected as a full-term member of the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Shaw is also ranked among the world’s most influential people in bio-pharma by Forbes magazine. Shaw was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in 2006.

Indonesia wins UNSC vote

Indonesia was elected a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for a two-year term. Maldives and Indonesia had contested for a seat in the UNSC. Indonesia won the seat after securing 144 votes against 46 for the Maldives. The other newly elected non-permanent members of UNSC are Germany, Belgium, Dominican Republic and South Africa.

Funds for special courts to try lawmakers

The Centre has released a fresh tranche of funds for 11 states to run special courts to try the over 1,500 cases related to lawmakers. The Department of Justice in the Law Ministry has released the funds. Last November, the Supreme Court had directed the government to come up with a scheme to set up 12 special courts to try 1,581 criminal cases pending against elected MPs and MLAs.

Egypt Prez sworn in for 2nd term in office

In Egypt, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was sworn in for a second four-year term in office. Sisi won 97% of valid votes in the March presidential election. Sisi ousted Egypt’s first freely elected president Mohamed Morsi and won his first term in 2014 with an overwhelming majority of the vote.

Himanta elected Vice-President of BAC

The President of Badminton Association of India (BAI), Himanta Biswa Sarma was elected as the Vice-President of Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC). The election took place during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the continental body in Bangkok, Thailand. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma became president of the Badminton Association of India in April 2018.

First South Asian to be elected in Oregon

Indian American Susheela Jayapal has been elected as a member of the Board of Commissioners of Multnomah County in Oregon, USA. With this Susheela becomes first South Asian to be elected in Oregon. Susheela, a political newcomer, will represent North and Northeast Portland commissioner’s seat.

Nirmal Singh elected JK Assembly speaker

BJP legislator & former Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh has been elected as the Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. Singh, who is an MLA from Billawar constituency in Jammu region, was elected as the Speaker by a voice vote in a one-day special session of the J&K Assembly. Singh defeated Congress MLA from Bandipora, Usman Majeed.
