T.C.A. Raghavan appointed as DG of ICWA

Dr. TCA Raghavan was appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA). He had served as India’s High Commissioner to Islamabad (Pakistan) and Singapore and has served in missions at London, Thimphu and Kuwait. ICWA was established as a non-official, non-political and non-profit organization under the Registration of Societies Act 1860.

UNSC imposes an arms embargo on South Sudan

The United Nations Security Council has imposed an arms embargo on South Sudan, nearly five years after civil war erupted in the country. A United States-drafted resolution won the minimum nine votes needed, while 6 member states including Russia and China abstained. South Sudan has been at war since 2013, when President Salva Kiir accused then-deputy Riek Machar of plotting a coup.

Iceland takes up US seat at UN rights council

Iceland was elected to take up the seat left vacant at the United Nations Human Rights Council after the United States quit the body. In a vote at the General Assembly, Iceland picked up 172 votes during a secret ballot as the candidate put forward by the regional grouping for that seat. Iceland will occupy the seat vacated by the US for the remainder of the current term.

UNSC adopts resolution to protect children

UN Security Council has adopted resolution 2427 aimed at a framework for mainstreaming protection, rights, well-being and empowerment of children throughout the conflict cycle. The resolution won unanimous approval of 15 members of the council. The resolution strongly condemns the recruitment & use of children by parties to the armed conflict as well as their re-recruitment.

Rajnath to chair 2-day plenary meet

A 2-day plenary meeting of NE Council will be chaired by the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in Shillong. He will discuss development projects with the Governors and CM of northeast states in the presence of Union Minister for Development of NE Region. Some of the major issues set to be discussed at the meet would be water resources management, POSHAN Abhiyan, road connectivity, and more.

SC verdict on Delhi CM vs L-G

LG has no independent decision-making power and cannot behave as an obstructionist. Except for the three issues, including land, law and order, Delhi government should be allowed to legislate. LG being the administrative head of Delhi must be informed of all executive powers but he cannot stall all the decisions of the council of ministers.

US withdraws from UN Human Rights Council

Nikki Haley, the US Permanent Representative to the UN announced the withdrawal of the United States from the United Nations Human Rights Council. She accused the council of bias against US ally Israel. Ms Haley also accused the council of maintaining a “disproportionate focus & unending hostility towards Israel” that shows it is “motivated by political bias, not by human rights”.

SAARC launches social enterprise programme

SAARC Development Fund launches a social enterprise development programme (SEDP) to fund 80 entities annually across eight-member states. SDF was established in April 2010 and its council comprises finance ministers of these eight SAARC countries.The SDF CEO is Sunil Motiwal SDF has already committed $73.74 million for social window projects out of which it has disbursed $47 million.

3-day national yoga olympiad-2018

A 3-day National Yoga Olympiad was inaugurated at the National Council of Educational Research and Training in CIET in New Delhi. This is the third consecutive year of National Yoga Olympiad of NCERT and this year about 500 students from 26 States and 4 RIEs are participating. Two books – Joy of Theatre and Sangeet — training packages were released on the occasion.

4th Meeting of Governing council – NITI Aayog

The 4th meeting of governing council of NITI Aayog was held in New Delhi chaired by PM Narendra Modi. The meeting aimed to double the farmers’ income and progress of flagship scheme such as Ayushman Bharat, National Nutrition Mission and Mission Indradhanush. It planned for a 3 year action plan to develop a new agenda for “New India 2022”.
