UN Panel On Digital Cooperation

UN chief Antonio Guterres has established a first-of-its-kind panel on digital cooperation aimed at addressing concerns of cybersecurity threats and rise in hate speech. The high-level panel on digital cooperation will be co-chaired by Melinda Gates and Jack Ma. It will have 20 members in total and include leaders from industry, civil society and academia.

Sushma Swaraj embarks two-day visit to Manama

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will today embark on a two-day visit to Manama to co-chair the second High Joint Commission meeting with her Bahraini counterpart Shaikh Al Khalifa. Mrs Swaraj will inaugurate the new Chancery building complex and address the Indian community. The visit is expected to provide an opportunity to identify new areas of cooperation between both countries.

Nepal, India to jointly promote tourism

The 2nd meeting of the joint working group on tourism cooperation between India and Nepal concluded in Kathmandu, Nepal. Both sides agreed to jointly promote Buddhist and Ramayana circuits and Adventure tourism. The meeting also decided to set up an industry-led India Nepal Tourism Forum. The Indian delegation was led by the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism Suman Billa.

International Day of Cooperatives 2018

The International Day of Cooperatives is an annual celebration of the co-operative movement, observed on the first Saturday in July since 1923. Observed on 7 July 2018 and theme was the ‘Sustainable societies through cooperation’. Co-operatives are committed to the sustainable development of communities – environmentally, socially and economically.

Maldives signed power deal with Pakistan

The Maldives has signed a capacity-building agreement in the power sector with Pakistan, thus posing fresh security challenges for India. Officials of the Maldives state electricity company, Stelco signed a MoU for cooperation in institution building activities when they visited Pakistan last week. The Maldives has stopped issuing work permits to Indians.

WIPO treaties approved

The Union Cabinet approved MoU between India and United Kingdom regarding cooperation between both countries in the sphere of Law & Justice. A Joint Consultative Committee will also be set up. It concerns exchange of experience by legal professionals, government functionaries for resolution of disputes.

Bhutan PM to visit India

Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay would be arriving in Delhi for a 3-day visit to India. Both the nations would be discussing about host issues such as security ties and economic cooperation. This visit is expected to advance the ‘exemplary ties of friendship’ between both the nations. Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan.

ROK & DPRK reopen maritime communication

North Korea and South Korea Sunday reopened maritime communication channel for the first time in 10 years with vessels from the 2 countries making contact. North Korean patrol boat responded immediately when the South Korean Navy contacted it via an international radio channel in the western sea. The Korean govt on both sides are working on confidence-building measures to boost cooperation.

India and Uzbekistan to boost ties

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Suhrob Rustamovich Kholmuradov in New Delhi. Both sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in diverse fields including Agriculture, Pharmaceuticals, Textiles, Construction, Information and Communication Technology, innovation and tourism. The current President of Uzbekistan is Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Cabinet approves MoU between India & Singapore

Union Cabinet has given its nod to a Memorandum of Understanding between India & Singapore for cooperation in urban planning and development. The agreement will facilitate government agencies to tap into expertise offered by Singaporean agencies in urban development and management. MoU aims is to facilitate government bodies like municipal corporations to help in rejuvenation of urban areas.

U.S. postpones 2+2 dialogue with India

US has postponed its inaugural 2+2 dialogue with India, citing “unavoidable reasons”. The dialogue was to be held on July 6, Sushma Swaraj and Nirmala Sitharaman were to take part in the meeting with US secretary of state Michael Pompeo and secretary of defence James Mattis. The meeting was expected to focus on strengthening strategic, security, and defence cooperation.

India signed JDI with Germany in Aviation

28 : The Cabinet signed a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) between India and Germany on Cooperation in the field of Civil Aviation. The Declaration will lead to the promotion of the effective and efficient development of air transport between India and Germany. It would cover Aviation Safety and Air Traffic Management, Helicopter Emergency Medical Services and Training and Skills Development.

India and Seychelles signed 6 agreements

India and Seychelles signed six MoUs in areas of naval cooperation, cybersecurity, culture, development projects. India extended a line of credit worth 100 million USD for Seychelles. India would also provide special grants in civilian infrastructure projects and enhance defence and maritime capabilities. PM also handed over a replica of Dornier Aircraft to President of Seychelles.

India-US 2+2 Dialogue

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will hold talks with their American counterparts Mike Pompeo and James Mattis. The maiden India-US 2+2 Dialogue will be held on July 6, 2018. The key issues that would be discussed would include counterterrorism, cybersecurity, defence cooperation, and regional security.

Mongolia to develop country’s 1st refinery

Mongolia to develop country’s first oil refinery at Stantsiin Hooloi in Altanshiree Soum with the help of a USD 1 billion loan from India. The home minister, Rajnath Singh is on a 3-day visit to Mongolia to strengthen India’s relations with Mongolia and security cooperation. Engineers India Ltd. will assist with construction of the refinery, which will boost Mongolia’s GDP by 10%.

Seychelles president on six-day trip to India

Seychelles president Danny Faure, who is on a 6-day visit to India will visit Gujarat, Goa and Uttarakhand. India will hand over a Dornier aircraft to Seychelles President even as project to jointly develop military infrastructure on Assumption Island was cancelled. The ministers would talk about cooperation between the 2 countries, in the fields of trade, defence and security.

India & Tajikistan to enhance Cooperation

India & Tajikistan have reaffirmed their commitment to promote bilateral relations $ agreed to enhance economic cooperation, particularly in sustainable water development. Maharashtra government, Quebec ink pact

The Maharashtra government and Canada’s Quebec province have signed a pact to increase the economic cooperation especially in areas like information technology, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and welfare of the tribal community. The pact was signed between Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis and Philippe Couillard, Prime Minister of Quebec province of Canada.

MoU between the ICMR and INSERM, France

Union Cabinet has been apprised of a MoU which was signed in March 2018 between the ICMR and INSERM, France. The MoU aims at cooperation in areas of common interest within the medical, life sciences and health research fields. The scientific excellence on two sides will help to successfully work on health research in specified areas.

India, China to jointly identify project

India and China agreed that they will jointly move forward in identifying a specific project in the area of capacity building in Afghanistan. Detailed discussions with China were held on bilateral and global issues on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. India and China have agreed that they will move forward in identifying a specific project initially.

Leaders sign Qingdao Declaration

10 : The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit concluded with the adoption of the Qingdao declaration. The declaration calls for implementing the three-year plan to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism. It also calls for the implementation of the treaty on long-term good neighbourliness, friendship and co-operation.

Agreements between India and China

India & China have signed 2 bilateral agreements on the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. Under the MoU, China would provide hydrological information to India regarding Brahmaputra River during the flood season. 2006 Protocol on Phytosanitary Requirements for Exporting Rice from India to China was amended to include export of non-Basmati varieties of rice from India.

Peace Mission 2018

PM Modi heads to China for SCO Summit

9 : PM Narendra Modi departed for China’s Qingdao to attend the two-day long 18th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit. Modi will also hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the SCO summit. The SCO is a permanent intergovernmental international organisation that focuses on strengthening mutual trust and neighbourliness among the member states.

Myanmar, UN sign pact for Rohingyas

Myanmar and U.N. agencies signed an agreement that might eventually lead to the return of some of the 700,000 Rohingya Muslims. The MoU signed promises to establish a “framework of cooperation” that aims to create the conditions for “voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable” repatriation of Rohingya refugees. The U.N. and U.S. have described the army crackdown as “ethnic cleansing”.

Issue of postage stamp between India & Russia

Cabinet has approved the agreement signed in connection with release of Joint Stamps between Department of Posts, India and Russia Post (MARKA) to establish postal cooperation. Bilateral relations between India and Russia are marked by broad understanding on issues of mutual interest. India and Russia enjoy enhanced levels of cooperation in almost all areas of the bilateral relationship.

China and India meet for fighting corruption

A six-member delegation of senior Chinese officials will meet their counterparts in Indian agencies. It is to deepen cooperation between the two countries on people wanted for corruption and asset recovery. During the Chinese presidency of G20 in 2016, the “High Level Principles on Cooperation on Persons Sought for Corruption and Asset Recovery” was initiated. India supported the initiative.

IAF chief BS Dhanoa to visit Brazil

IAF chief B S Dhanoa will begin a four-day visit to Brazil to explore possibilities of deeper defence cooperation between the two countries. The visit would also strengthen relationships and enable engagement in productive exchanges between the two air forces. The air chief marshal is embarking on the goodwill visit at the invitation of his Brazilian counterpart.

India to host first BIMSTEC war games

India will host the first military exercise of the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) group focussing on counter-terrorism in September. The aim of the exercise is to promote strategic alignment among the member-states and to share best practices in the area of counter-terrorism. The exercise is scheduled to be held in Pune.

Bangladesh CG ship at Visakhapatnam Port

A Bangladesh Coast Guard Ship, Tajuddin, arrived at the Visakhapatnam Port. The aim of the visit is to develop working level operation between Coast Guards of maritime nations and enhance interoperability in the fields of maritime search and rescue, anti-piracy operations. Tajuddin has participated in the 10th Regional Co-operation Agreement (ReCAP) for safe and secure sea in February 2017.

China invites Iran to attend SCO summit

China has invited the Iranian President to participate in the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit being organised in June 2018. The summit will be the first after the inclusion of India and Pakistan as members of the organisation in 2017. Iran, Mongolia, Afghanistan, and Belarus have been granted observer status.

PM Modi to visit Indonesia

PM Modi will be visiting Indonesia on May 29-31 with an aim of working together with Indonesia to strengthen the strategic partnership between both the nations. During the visit, major areas of cooperation will be in the field of space, security & defence. An agreement on cooperation between India and Indonesia on kite museums in both the countries may also take place.

India, Nepal to conduct a military exercise

Armies of both the nations, India and Nepal will conduct a 2-week long military exercise ‘Surya Kiran’ in Uttarakhand. The focus of the exercise will be to enhance cooperation in conducting counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain. Around 300 soldiers from both the nations will be participating in this exercise.

India to attend SCO anti-terror talks in Pak

India has confirmed its attendance in Shanghai Cooperation Organisation-Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure Legal Experts meeting to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan. Pakistan will be hosting its 1st SCO meeting, since the country along with India became a member of the organisation in June 2017.Experts will discuss the terror threat faced by the region & ways to enhance counter-terror efforts.

MoU on cooperation in food security approved

Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval to the Memorandum of Understanding between India & Denmark regarding cooperation in the area of food safety. It will help improve food safety standard setting by getting access to best practices & facilitating food trade of important commodities. It will also promote understanding of best practices in areas of food safety in both countries.

IAF Chief Dhanoa began 4-day visit to Israel

Chief of Air Staff BS Dhanoa has begun a 4-day visit to Israel with an aim to enhance cooperation between air forces of the two countries. He will attend a conference themed ‘Air superiority as a bridge to regional stability’ which is being organized as part of 70th-anniversary celebrations of Israel Air Force. Air forces of both the countries have been enhancing cooperation over the years.

3rd Mission Innovation Ministerial in Sweden

23 : India will be participating in the 3rd Mission Innovation Ministerial that will be held at Malmo-Sweden. Mission Innovation is a global platform of 23 countries & EU aimed at accelerating clean energy innovations through enhanced government funding, public-private sector partnership& enhanced global cooperation. India is the founding member of Mission Innovation & part of Steering Committee

Netherlands PM to visit India

Prime Minister of Netherlands Mark Rutte will visit India on May 24 & 25 with an aim to boost the economic and political cooperation between the 2 countries. It will be Rutte’s second visit to India since June 2015 but the first after being re-elected as Prime Minister in 2017. Netherlands is the 5th largest investor in India with a cumulative investment of $23 billion from 2000 to Dec 2017.

India to attend SCO Culture Ministers’ meet

The Minister of State for Culture Dr. Mahesh Sharma will be attending Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Cultural Ministers Meeting at Sanya in China. It is the first time that India would be attending the SCO Culture Ministers’ Meeting. The meeting will showcase India’s initiatives to actively pursue cultural cooperation with other countries including SCO countries.

Guatemala opened its embassy in Jerusalem

Guatemala has opened its embassy in Jerusalem, following in the footsteps of the United States, which recently inaugurated its embassy in the city. Guatemala, the second country to recognise Israel as a state in 1948, has had a long history of military cooperation with Israel. All embassies to Israel were situated in the commercial capital Tel Aviv, before US and Guatemalan embassies moved.

V.K. Singh’s surprise visit to North Korea

Minister of State for External Affairs General V.K. Singh has become the first Indian minister to visit North Korea in 20 years.The MoS highlighted the threat posed to India from nuclear proliferation. India and North Korea also decided to explore possibilities of cooperation in areas of mutual interest including vocational education, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and Yoga.

MoU between India & Morocco in legal field

The Union Cabinet has given its ex-post facto approval for signing of the MoU for cooperation in the legal field between India and Morocco. The MoU will allow both the countries to share their experience and expertise in the field of law and legislation. The MoU will give an opportunity to the Lawyers, Law Officers and law students to discuss issues in the field of law and justice.

Nepal to hold BIMSTEC 2018

Nepal’s PM, KP Oli has announced to host the 2018 Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical& Economic Cooperation summit. BIMSTEC is an international organisation of 7 nations of South & South East Asia, including Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan & Nepal. BIMSTEC aims to enhance technological & economic cooperation among South & South East Asian countries.

First SCO tourism ministerial meeting

1st tourism ministerial meeting between the members of Shanghai Cooperation Organization was held in Wuhan, China. The meeting approved an action plan that will serve as a guideline for tourism cooperation between SCO member states from 2019 to 2020. The plan specifies measures taken to improve tourist experience &safety, develop tourist products & promote smart tourism.

India, Ethiopia held bilateral talks

India and Ethiopia vowed to strengthen cooperation in key areas such as defence, counter-terrorism, and trade and investment during the 2nd Joint Committee Meeting between the two countries.External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Dr Gebeyehu led their respective delegations. Both sides also exchanged views on issues of mutual interest. Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia.

India, Panama signed two agreements

India and Panama have signed two agreements on the exemption of Visas for holders of Diplomatic and Official Passports and in the field of Agriculture. Two centres for Biodiversity and Innovation will be set up by India in Panama. Both the countries have agreed to strengthen cooperation in tax information, air services, traditional medicines, culture and space.

SCO Secretary-General arrived in India

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Secretary General Rashid Alimov has arrived in India to hold talks with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj & other Union ministers. India became a full member of SCO in 2017, at the summit held in Astana, Kazakhstan. SCO is an intergovernmental international organisation aimed at strengthening mutual trust & neighbourliness among the member states.

MoU to cooperate in diplomatic training

India and Guatemala have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for expanding cooperation in the area of diplomatic training. The agreement was inked after a meeting between Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and his Guatemala counterpart, Jafeth Cabrera Franco. Guatemala is one of India’s important trading partners in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region.

India and Guatemala agreed to work together to combat terrorism. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on enhancing cooperation in diplomatic academics. A Letter of Intent (LoI) of providing training for the English language to Guatemalan teachers was also signed under the ITEC (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation) programme.

HPCL begins home-delivery of diesel

After Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), state-owned Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) has launched home-delivery of diesel in Mumbai. ‘HP Fuel Connect’ will deliver diesel to select customers having fixed equipment, heavy machinery in their premises. IOC had in March launched home-delivery of diesel in Pune.

India, Sri lanka agree on information exchange

India & Sri Lanka have agreed on cooperation on exchange of information & other aspects to tackle smuggling of drugs in both countries. The decision was taken at the 3rd bilateral meeting between India’s Narcotics Control Bureau & Sri Lanka’s Police Narcotics Bureau. Use of sea route to smuggle drugs & sharing of best practices & training needs were also a part of the discussion.

India, US discuss maritime security

3 : India and the US held their third maritime security dialogue in Goa from 30th April to 1st May. The two sides discussed developments in the maritime domain in the Indo-Pacific Region and exchanged views on ways to further strengthen bilateral maritime security cooperation. They also reviewed the implementation of the decisions taken during the previous Maritime Security Dialogues.

India & Japan to work together

India and Japan have agreed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in energy development space as well as contribute to worldwide energy security and solutions to climate change issues. Both countries agreed to initiate the discussion towards development of Electric Vehicles. They will work together in promoting well-functioning energy markets.

India, Nepal to review bilateral trade treaty

India and Nepal have agreed to review bilateral trade treaty. The decision was taken at the meeting of India-Nepal Inter Government Committee on Trade, Transit and Cooperation to Control Unauthorised Trade, held in Kathmandu. The two sides also discussed amendments to the bilateral Treaty of Transit signed in 1999 to further facilitate transit movement of Nepal’s trade with third countries.

India-Nepal IGC meeting began in Kathmandu

India-Nepal Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) meeting on trade, transit and cooperation to control unauthorised trade in Kathmandu started on 26th April.The meeting provides a regular platform to review the implementation of past trade and transit agreements.IGC also deliberate upon day-to-day problems in regulation of Nepalese traffic-in-transit and issue of Indian investments in Nepal.

23rd meeting of Western Zonal Council

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh chaired the 23rd meeting of Western Zonal Council at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.During the last 3 years or so, two Council meetings and 3 Standing Committee meetings of the Western Zonal Council were held. Zonal Councils were set up under the States Reorganization Act, 1956 to foster Inter-State co-operation and co-ordination among the States.

MoU between India and Sao Tome and Principe

The government gave approval for an agreement signed between India and an African island nation, Sao Tome and Principe, to increase cooperation in the field of Medicinal Plants.The MoU assumes significance as there is a global increase in traditional and alternative healthcare systems. Medicinal Plants are a major resource base for the traditional medicine and herbal industry.

Cabinet nod to BRICS pact on medical products

The government approved the pact with medicine regulatory agencies of BRICS nations on cooperation in the field of regulation of medical products.The MoU would facilitate better understanding about the regulatory aspects between the parties and could help in increasing India’s export of medical products to BRICS. The approval was given by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister.

EAM to attend India-Mongolia Joint Committee

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will co-chair the 6th round of India-Mongolia Joint Consultative Committee meeting with her Mongolian counterpart in Ulaanbaatar.The meeting will discuss trade, economic, cultural and scientific co-operation. Mrs Swaraj became the first Indian External Affairs Minister to visit the Mongolia in 42 years.

Navy Chief to attend Naval Symposium in Iran

Indian Navy Chief, Admiral Sunil Lanba has began his visit to Iran to attend the 6th edition of Indian Ocean Naval Symposium. IONS which was conceived by Indian Navy in 2008 aims to enhance maritime cooperation among navies of littoral states of Indian Ocean Region. Naval Chief’s visit is aimed at consolidating bilateral naval relations b/w India & Iran and explore new avenues for cooperation

Commonwealth to take action on cybersecurity

The Commonwealth countries have unanimously agreed to take action on cybersecurity by 2020.The declaration has been termed as the world’s largest & most geographically diverse inter-governmental commitment on cybersecurity cooperation. It followed an announcement by UK government pledging up to 15 million pounds to help the Commonwealth nations strengthen their cybersecurity capabilities.

Commonwealth Heads of Govt Meeting begins

The two-day 25th Commonwealth heads of Govt meeting began in London. The Summit focuses on peace, prosperity, security, trade and investment. Discussions on strengthening cooperation in the fight against global terrorism & cyber crime are expected. It is after 20 years that the UK is hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Govt Meeting. PM Narendra Modi is attending the summit for the first time.

Government Raises NABARD’s Authorised Capital to ` 300 billion

As part of the drive to double the income of farmers by 2022, the government has raised the authorised capital of NABARD by six times from 50 billion to Rs 300 billion to help it increase its lending to the rural economy. The increase in authorised capital will enable Nabard to respond to commitments it has undertaken, particularly in respect of the Long Term Irrigation Fund and on-lending to cooperative banks. The government in the Budget had enhanced the corpus of the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIFD) to Rs 280 billion with an overall objective of doubling farmers income by 2022. Nabard is the main agency for implementing RIFD scheme. Harsh Kumar Bhanwala is the Chairman of NABARD. It headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

PM Modi Leaves on 5-Day Visit to Sweden & UK

India, Zambia ink 4 agreements

India and Zambia signed 4 agreements after the delegation-level talks held in the capital city of Lusaka.The 2 agreements were signed in the areas of avoidance of double taxation & visa exemption on diplomatic and official passports. The other 2 agreement were signed in the area of judicial cooperation and for the establishment of an Entrepreneurship Development Institute in Zambia.

First India-Nordic Summit in Stockholm

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet leaders of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark & Iceland for the first India-Nordic Summit in Stockholm on April 17.Narendra Modi will be the first Indian PM to visit Stockholm since 1988. The six leaders will exchange views on regional and global issues such as environment and climate, trade and investment and discuss areas of future cooperation.

India, Equatorial Guinea inked three MoUs

Three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between India and Equatorial Guinea.The MoUs were signed towards affirming cooperation in the fields of medicinal plants, traditional systems of medicine, and health and medicine sector. An action plan was also devised on cooperation in the field of Information and Communicational Technology.

UK’s 1st permanent Middle East military base

U.K. has opened its first permanent military base in the Middle East in more than 4 decades in the Persian Gulf country of Bahrain.The £40m UK Naval Support facility ‘Jufair’ at Mina Salman will be staffed by up to 500 soldiers, sailors and airmen. Both the countries hope that this base will increase military cooperation between the Royal Navy and its Bahraini counterpart.

Govt clears India-Iran MoU for expert group

The government gave an ex-post facto approval to an agreement with Iran to set up an expert group on trade remedy measures.The MoU will establish a framework of cooperation in the area of trade remedial measures like anti-dumping and countervailing duty. The pact was signed on February 17 this year during the visit of the President of Iran.

India & JICA signed a ?500-cr loan agreement

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide a concessional loan of ` 500 crore for smarter mobility project in Chennai to develop Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).ITS will make traffic management system more efficient to ease the city’s congestion.The project will optimise the way traffic lights work and reduce long vehicle queues at city’s main intersections.
