Transformation Series Challenge by YES Bank

YES Bank, through partnerships with tech giants such as Microsoft, Cisco, IBM and Adobe has unveiled the 7th edition of ‘Transformation Series Challenge’. The Theme of the event is ‘tech for urban development’. The issues identified include over-utilisation of plastic and declining air quality in cities. Swachh Bharat survey 2018

According to Swachh Bharat survey 2018, Jharkhand is the cleanest state in India followed by Maharashtra and Chattisgarh. Among the cities, Indore is the cleanest followed by Bhopal & chandigarh. Tripura was at the bottom of the list of cleanest states, followed by Puducherry, Nagaland and West Bengal. 18 out of 25 dirtiest cities in India with population of over 1 lakh are in West Bengal.

Delhi to run out of groundwater by 2020

At least 21 major Indian cities, including Delhi and Bengaluru, are expected to run out of groundwater by 2020. It will affect 100 million people, according to government think tank NITI Aayog report. It further stated that 40% Indian population will have no access to drinking water by 2030 and that India will lose 6% GDP by 2050 due to the crisis.

Fadnavis visited Virgin Hyperloop test site

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis visited one of Virgin Hyperloop One’s test sites in the US, earlier this week. The visit follows the MoU signed by the state government with the Virgin Group to build the Mumbai-Pune Hyperloop at an estimated cost of ?20,000 crore. The Hyperloop is expected to reduce the travel time between the two cities to 25 minutes.

IMD to commission 27 doppler radars

At least 27 doppler radars would be soon commissioned across the country covering coastlines and major cities. It would provide severe weather warning to stakeholders as much as six hours in advance. Providing information in advance about thunderstorms like the one recently reported in Bihar and Bengal helps in reducing the damage and loss of lives.

New course under GIAN launched

NITI Aayog has launched a new course on ‘Urban Analytics – Evaluating and Measuring Sustainability of Cities’ at IIT, Roorkee. The course was launched under Global Initiative on Academic Network (GIAN). The course will provide an understanding and analysis on the urbanisation and its impacts that would help in evaluating the conditions of sustainability in Indian cities.

Modi, Oli launch Janakpur-Ayodhya bus service

PM Modi & his Nepalese counterpart K P Sharma Oli has jointly inaugurated a direct bus service b/w Janakpur & Ayodhya – the two sacred cities for Hindus. Janakpur the birthplace of Sita will now be connected with Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Ram through the bus service. The places are significant in the Ramayana tourism circuit that falls under the Indian Govt’s Swadesh Darshan Scheme.

Govt departments earmark Rs 16,500 cr for SBM

A sum of Rs 16,500 cr has been earmarked by 71 ministries & departments of the govt for implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) in 2018-19. The amount is over & above the budget of Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation for SBM (Gramin) & Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs for SBM (Urban). SBM aims to clean up the streets, roads & infrastructure of India’s cities & rural areas.

14 Cities In India are World’s most polluted

Delhi and Varanasi are among the 14 Indian cities that figured in a list of 20 most polluted cities in the world in terms of PM 2.5 levels in 2016, according to the data released by the WHO. Other Indian cities were Kanpur, Faridabad, Gaya, Patna, Agra, Muzaffarpur, Srinagar, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Patiala and Jodhpur. PM 2.5 includes pollutants like sulfate, nitrate and black carbon.
