Australia wins Champions Trophy 2018

World Champions Australia defeated India 3-1 via shoot-off after both teams were locked at 1-1 in regulation time to clinch its 2nd consecutive Champions Trophy hockey title. It was the 37th and final edition of the tournament with Australia winning 15th Champions Trophy title. It was being held at Breda. India won their consecutive silver medal while the Netherlands won the bronze medal.

India clinch Kabaddi Masters title

Putting up yet another superlative show, India thrashed Iran 44-26 to emerge champions of the six-nation Kabaddi Masters Dubai. India is the reigning world champions and has won gold medals in all the Asian Games to date, and all World Cup events so far. The six-nation invitational tournament was organised by International Kabaddi Federation.

FIFA lifts suspension on Guatemala

FIFA lifted a suspension imposed on Guatemala over its failure to comply with anti-corruption rules. The suspension prevented Guatemalan teams from participating in international competitions such as the Gold Cup, the Central American Games and the CONCACAF Champions League. FIFA imposed ban on Guatemala in October 2016.

Real Madrid won the 2017–18 Champions League

Real Madrid have claimed yet another Champions League title by beating Liverpool FC 3-1 in the final. It is the third consecutive year that Real Madrid have won the tournament and the fourth such in five years, taking their total tally to a record 13 titles. Madrid’s Gareth Bale became the first player ever to come on as a substitute and score twice in a European Cup/Champions League final.

South Korea won Asian Champions Trophy 2018

Defending champions Indian Women’s Hockey Team lost to hosts South Korea 0-1 in the final match of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2018. The win for South Korea saw them lift the title for the third time after having won in the 2010 and 2011 editions of the tournaments. India’s Vandana Katariya was declared the player of the tournament.

Lewis Hamilton won Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton took his first victory of the season at a dramatic and chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas was forced to retire with just three laps to go. It was the first victory of the season for champions Mercedes.

ICC scraped 50-over Champions Trophy

International Cricket Council has decided to convert the 2021 Champions Trophy, scheduled in India, into a World T20 event.Champions Trophy was the second-biggest 50-overs tournament after the World Cup. The number of teams competing varied over the years. This means that there would now be two ICC World T20 events in 2 years — the 2020 edition in Australia and the 2021 edition in India.

Mumbai to host Intercontinental Cup

Mumbai Football Arena, the new hub of Indian football, will play host to the inaugural edition of the 4 nation Intercontinental Cup.The tournament will see Indian national team competing with South Africa, New Zealand & Chinese Taipei. Intercontinental Cup comes on back of Tri-nation series in Sept 2017 which was also held at the same venue with India eventually emerging champions.

Shreyasi Singh won Double Trap Gold

Shooter Shreyasi Singh won the gold medal in women’s double trap event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.The bronze medal went to Scotland. She had won a Bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon in the double trap team event. She won the silver medal in double trap event at the 2017 Commonwealth Shooting Championships.

Manika Batra won gold medal in Table Tennis

Manika Batra inspired India to a historic gold medal with her stunning singles victories, as she defeated defending champions Singapore 3-1 to claim the gold medal in TT at Commonwealth Games 2018.This is India’s first ever gold at the multi-sport event. It was only the second table tennis team gold for India at the Games with the men achieving the feat in the 2006 Melbourne edition.

India U-16 won Hong Kong football tournament

The India U-16 team emerged champions in the ‘Jockey Cup International Youth Invitational Football Tournament’ with a 4-2 victory over Hong Kong U-17 in the final in Hong Kong on 25th March. The tournament was a U-17 event where India fielded their U-16 National Team. This was the team‘s third consecutive victory in as many days. The Indians had earlier defeated Chinese Taipei and Singapore.

Australia lifted Sultan Azlan Shah cup

World champions Australia has lifted the coveted Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey title by outplaying England 2-1 in the finals. Australia has now won the prestigious tournament for the 10th time. England had to settle with the silver medal while Argentina claimed the bronze medal. India finished a disappointed fifth in the six-nation tournament.

India rises 3 places in FIFA rankings

India has jumped three ranks to be placed 102nd in the first FIFA rankings of the year.India, which is just above Qatar (103rd), is ranked 14th among Asian countries. The Indians remained unbeaten in 2017, having won seven of their nine matches while two ended in draws. The top 14 spots remained unchanged with reigning World Champions Germany at the top followed by Brazil, Portugal.

Ronaldo won the Best Player award

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Best Player of the Year accolade at the Globe Soccer Awards. Ronaldo retained the award, making it four wins overall, after helping his club defend the Champions League and win the Liga title. Ronaldo was named winner ahead of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain Neymar.

Real Madrid has defeated Grêmio 1-0 to clinch the FIFA Club World Cup for a third time, matching Barcelona’s record.Ronaldo curled home a free-kick as Real became the first team to win back-to-back titles.Real have now won 5 trophies in 2017 – Champions League, La Liga, Uefa Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup and now the Club World Cup.

Kaka announces retirement

Former AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder Kaka, a 2002 World Cup winner with Brazil, has retired.He is one of only eight players to win the treble of World Cup, European Cup/Champions League and Ballon d’Or.Renowned for his strong mazy dribbles, his finishing and his creativity in providing goalscoring opportunities for others, Kaka played 92 times for Brazil, scoring 29 times.

India to host 2023 World Cup

Board of Control for Cricket in India has confirmed that India will be hosting the ICC Cricket World Cup on 2023 & ICC Champions Trophy in 2021.This is the first time India would be hosting an ODI World Cup on its own. India has previously co-hosted ODI World Cup in 1987, 1996 and 2011.The tournament is set to feature 10 teams, with 2 sides qualifying from 2022 Cricket World Cup Qualifiers

Nadal, Muguruza named ITF champions

9 : International Tennis Federation has named Spaniards Rafael Nadal & Garbiñe Muguruza as this year’s ITF World Champions.While this is the 3rd ITF World Championship for Nadal, it is the 1st for Muguruza.It is also the 1st time since 1998 that men’s & women’s ITF world champions hail from the same country.Muguruza is the 2nd Spanish tennis player to achieve WTA no.1 after Arantxa Vicario.

Ronaldo pips Messi to win Ballon d’Or

Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or for a 5th time to move level with rival Lionel Messi.The award caps a year in which Ronaldo has won LaLiga, the Champions League & Spanish Super Cup with Real Madrid, as well as helping Portugal qualify for the 2018 World Cup.Messi finished second in the voting while Neymar was third.Ronaldo previously won the award in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

England won First-ever U-17 Title

England won the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup for the very first time after a 5-2 win over European U17 champions Spain. The final was held in Kolkata. Spain finished runners-up for the fourth time after 1991, 2003 and 2007.

Real Madrid wins UEFA Super Cup

Real Madrid captured the UEFA Super Cup for a second straight year, defeating Manchester United in finals to win 2-1 in Macedonia. Casemiro and Isco scored the goals for Real Madrid on either side of halftime, leading the club to yet another trophy under Zinedine Zidane. Real Madrid have now won both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup for two years running.

World record deal with PSG

Neymar has completed his move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for a world-record fee worth £200m. The transfer doubles previous world record fee paid when Paul Pogba moved from Juventus to Manchester United for a £105 million. In his 4 seasons in Spain, Neymar scored 105 goals as Barcelona won Champions League, Club World Cup, two Spanish league titles & Copa del Rey three times.

Borussia wins German Cup

Borussia Dortmund won the 2017 German Cup beating Frankfurt 2-1. It is the fourth title of Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund had already earned automatic qualification for the group stage of the 2017 UEFA Champions League through position in the Bundesliga. It is one of the most successful clubs in German football history.

Ambassadors for Champions Trophy

Harbhajan Singh has been named as one of the eight ambassadors for the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled in England from June 1-18. Shahid Afridi, Habibul Bashar, Ian Bell, Shane Bond, Mike Hussey,Sri Lanka and Graeme Smith are the other ambassadors. The announcement comes exactly 50 days before the first ball is bowled in the tournament-opener between England and Bangladesh at The Oval.

Ronaldo Wins FIFA’s Player of the Year

Cristiano Ronaldo won FIFA’s player of the year award for the fourth time, beating his old rival Lionel Messi. Ronaldo was rewarded for his performance in 2016 when he won the Champions League with his club Real Madrid and then Euro 2016 with Portugal. Messi was second and Frenchman Antoine Griezmann third. Italian Claudio Ranieri won the coach of the year award.
