SAFAR unveiled at Chandni Chowk
Minister for Science and Technology, Harsh Vardhan has unveiled the 1st of a kind Air Quality and Weather Forecast System, SAFAR at Chandni Chowk in Delhi. The system will measure regular air quality parameters such as PM2.5 & PM10, levels of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide & benzene. The station will provide online information about ultrafine particles PM1 & mercury.

$1.5 bln autonomous driving fund

Chinese search engine Baidu has announced a 10 billion yuan autonomous driving fund as part of a wider plan to speed up its technical development and compete with U.S. rivals. The “Apollo Fund” will invest in 100 autonomous driving projects over the next three years. The fund aims to create technology for completely autonomous cars, which will be ready for city roads in China by 2020.

China mulls petrol car ban

China is gearing up to ban petrol and diesel cars, a move that would boost electric vehicles. The plan would follow decisions by France and Britain to outlaw the sale of such cars & vans from 2040 to clamp down on harmful emissions. The Chinese govt in June introduced draft regulations compelling automakers to produce more electrically-powered vehicles by 2020 through a complex quota system.

SAIC Motor to set up Rs. 2000 cr. car plant

China’s SAIC Motor has entered into an MoU with the Gujarat government to establish the plant at Halol where MG brand cars will be manufactured. SAIC will set up a passenger car manufacturing facility at Halol in Panchmahals district of Gujarat with an investment of Rs. 2,000 crore. Project will create 1,000 jobs in the state. SAIC Motor plans to bring the MG car brand in India by 2019.

First Indian to win FIA F3 Championship

Jehan Daruvala became the first Indian driver to win in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. His victory in race 3 comes 18 years after Narain Karthikeyan won in the British F3 Championship. FIA F3 is the toughest junior racing category in the world, having produced some of the best talents like Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton. He now stands 5th in the 2017 championship standings.

E-taxi trial run to begin in Nagpur

India’s first electric taxi trial in the country would be launched in Nagpur from May 24. Mahindra and Mahindra is set to provide 200 taxis for the initiative. Electric car taxi is one of the ambitious projects and forms as a part of its UNDP millennium goals to tackle pollution.

Irdai to hike in motor insurance premium

IRDAI has proposed up to 50 per cent increase in insurance premium for cars, motor cycles as well as commercial vehicles from April 1. However, there is no proposal to increase the third party motor insurance premium for small cars (up to 1,000 cc) from ` 2,055 currently. The hike proposed in mid-segment cars (1,000 – 1,500 cc) as well as bigger cars and SUVs is 50 per cent.

A report reveals that scientists have built an “emotionally intelligent” electric car that can make driving easier for the senior citizens. The car is fitted with a range of high-tech devices from eye-tracking goggles to biometric technology that monitor heart races and cardio-vascular health. The modified Peugeo- tion will monitor driver`s concentration levels, stress levels and driving habits.

Prototype flying car

USA-based Terrafugia Inc. announces that its prototype flying car, dubbed the Transition, has completed its first flight. While not flying, the wings of the car can be folded up so that it can be driven like a car.
