Assam’s anti-witch hunting bill

President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Bill, 2015, converting it to an Act. The bill has been converted into an Act after almost three years it was passed by Assam’s state assembly on August 13, 2015. It imposes imprisonment of up to seven years, along with a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh, for branding someone as witch.

Assam’s first transgender judge Swati Baruah

The court in Guwahati has got the first transgender judge of Assam. Swati Bidhan Baruah has been appointed as a judge to mediate cases in Lok Adalat. She is the third transgender judge in the country and will mediate in pre-litigation cases related to finance companies. Joyita Mondal of West Bengal is India’s first transgender judge.

NRL to introduce online legal compliance

Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) in Assam has become the first oil PSU to adopt an online legal compliance system by introducing ‘Legatrix’. The cloud-based compliance management system was inaugurated by Managing Director S K Barua. This initiative will boost up NRL’s contribution towards the Digital India Mission and induce a greater transparency in its operations.

Theatre personality Sukracharya passes away

Noted Assamese theatre personality Sukracharya Rabha, famed for his open-air theatre festival, died on 9th May. Rabha founded ‘Badungduppa’, a rural-based theatre centre at his village Rampur. Rabha promoted the Rabha culture and the language using theatre as a medium.

Train connecting NE to the west coast began

The Northeast Frontier Railway has started operating one lease Parcel Cargo Express Train (PCET) on fortnightly basis, connecting Northeastern part of the country to the West Coast. The route of this Parcel Cargo Express Train is – New Guwahati in Assam to Kalyan in Maharashtra. The PCET has been started in line with the Government’s priority to provide connectivity to the Northeast region.

E-Way Bill system in Assam & Rajasthan

The E-way bill system for intra-State transport of goods in Assam and Rajasthan will roll out on May 16 and May 20 respectively. This would take the total number of States under the system to 21. E-Way Bill system for inter-State movement of goods has been rolled out from 01st April 2018. E-Way Bill is electronically generated for the consignment/movement of goods from one place to another.

Lt Gen Sukhdeep takes over as DGAR

Lieutenant General Sukhdeep Sangwan has taken over the charge as the Director General of Assam Rifles. Lt Gen Sanwagn has taken over as the 20th Director General of the Force which is popularly called as Sentinels of the North East. Lt Gen Sangwan has also participated in Operation Blue Star, Operation Vijay and Operation Parakram.

AFSPA removed from Meghalaya

The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, AFSPA has been removed completely from Meghalaya.The AFSPA act, empowers security forces to conduct operations and arrest anyone anywhere without prior notice. In Arunachal Pradesh, the AFSPA has been reduced from 16 police stations areas bordering Assam to eight police stations.

Assam’s Spring Festival began

The 2-day Assam Spring Festival began at the Manas National Park on 7th April, where visitors will get to experience the state’s local food, music, handloom and handicrafts.The aim of the event is to promote the local food and culture of the fringe villagers. The National park which is also a tiger and rhino reserve covers five districts of Assam.

Assam launched toll free women?s helpline

The Assam government launched ?181-Sakhi toll-free women‘s helpline? to tackle the recent spurt in crime in the state. This is a scheme of universalization of women helpline and is launched under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India. This service intends to provide 24 hours immediate and emergency response to women affected by violence.
