China launched new satellite

China successfully launched a hyperspectral imaging satellite for comprehensive observation of the atmosphere, including air pollution. The Gaofen-5 satellite was launched off the back of a Long March 4C rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern Shanxi Province. It will help reduce China’s dependence on foreign hyperspectral satellite data.

Environment ministry releases draft of NCAP

Environment Ministry has come out with a draft national action plan proposing multiple strategies to reduce air pollution. Ministry in the draft said the objective of NCAP is to augment & evolve an effective & a proficient ambient air quality monitoring network across the country. Ministry hopes to bring down air pollution in 100 non-attainment cities by 50% in next 5 years under the NCAP.

First city to roll-out Euro VI fuel

With an aim to combat the rising levels of air pollution in Delhi-NCR region, petrol pumps in the capital have started supplying ultra-clean Bharat Stage VI grade fuel.This move makes New Delhi the first city in the country to switch from BS-IV grade fuels to BS-VI. The major difference in standards between the existing BS-IV and the new BS-VI auto fuel norms is the presence of sulphur.

Govt. sanctions fund to clear pollution: Delhi

The central government has sanctioned ?1,200 crore for schemes to tackle air pollution in Delhi, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant has said.He asserted that the city won’t face pollution on account of agriculture residue from neighbouring states this year. He further suggested that “those who are not able to live up to the environment control” will be penalised.

Cities hosting FIFA U-17 are polluted

According to Greenpeace, “the six cities hosting the FIFA Under-17 World Cup – New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, Guwahati and Kolkata, share dangerous levels of air pollution that threaten the health of spectators and athletes”. Environment activists raised a red flag regarding dipping air quality in Delhi. Concentrations of PM in these cities broke international standards.

Indians dying due to air pollution: Study

According to medical journal The Lancet, over a million Indians die every year due to air pollution and some of the worst polluted cities of the world are in India. Study estimates that globally 2.7-3.4 million preterm births may be associated with PM2.5 exposure and South Asia is the worst hit. Air pollution and climate change are intricately linked and needed to be tackled together.

SC asks Govt. To Notify Plan For Air

The SC has asked the central government to notify the “graded response action plan” for different level of air pollution in the Delhi and NCR. Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) will install real time and manual pollution monitoring stations in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The court order came after a report submitted by the CPCB giving four categories of air pollution.

NGT imposed ban on air pollution causing construction activities in National Capital Region

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on 10 April 2015 imposed ban on all construction activities in the National Capital Region (NCR) that do not follow the guidelines provided by the then Union Ministry of Environment and forest in 2010. The directive was delivered by a bench headed by Justice Swatanter Kumar, NGT chairman, in order to check growing menace of air pollution in the NCR.
