Collaborative programme on HIV/AIDS research

Governments of India & Netherlands have launched a collaborative research programme on HIV/AIDS between India, Netherlands & Sweden. Programme aims to harness research strengths & diverse expertise across 3 nations to develop better tools to understand HIV epidemic. It will enable a multitude of cross-learning opportunities in HIV/AIDS research to address unmet needs & emerging challenges.

ADB to give ` 1,700 crore aid to U’khand

The Asian Development Bank has agreed to give an aid of Rs 1,700 crore to Uttarakhand.The aid will be given for the creation of infrastructural facilities, sewer treatment plants and water supply facilities in urban areas of Uttarakhand. This was conveyed to Chief Minister of Uttrakhand by the country director of ADB’s India Regiment Mission.

AIDS claimed 1 million lives

According to a UN report, AIDS claimed a million lives in 2016, almost half the 2005 toll that marked the peak of deadly epidemic. In 2016,19.5 million of 36.7 million people living with HIV had access to treatment, 1st time more than half of infected people were receiving the treatment. There is no cure for AIDS, infected people rely on anti-retroviral therapy to stop virus from replicating

HIV and AIDS (Prevention & Control) Bill

A crucial bill to ensure equal rights to people afflicted with HIV and AIDS in getting treatment, admission in educational institutions and jobs, was passed by the Rajya Sabha. The Rajya Sabha passed the Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Prevention and Control) Bill, 2014. The bill seeks to assure treatment to patients without stigmatising them.

AIDS Vaccine Trial Begins in S.Africa

South Africa has just launched a multi-year trial of a vaccine that might save millions of lives and help put an end to AIDS. It’s the first AIDS vaccine trial in seven years, and hopes are high, not just in South Africa, but around the world. To develop a vaccine, scientists find a way to mimic the virus so the body makes an immune response to protect itself.

HIV treatment to be linked to Aadhaar

Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) Treatment for HIV/AIDS infection will now be linked to Aadhaar. Even those coming for HIV infection testing will have to produce their Aadhaar cards. This is to avoid duplication of patients going to several ART Centres for testing.
