UN Panel On Digital Cooperation

UN chief Antonio Guterres has established a first-of-its-kind panel on digital cooperation aimed at addressing concerns of cybersecurity threats and rise in hate speech. The high-level panel on digital cooperation will be co-chaired by Melinda Gates and Jack Ma. It will have 20 members in total and include leaders from industry, civil society and academia.

Best-ever Booker Prize winner

The English Patient’ was voted as the best-ever Man Booker Prize winner, celebrating five decades of this prestigious literary award. Michael Ondaatje’s ‘The English Patient’ won the Booker Prize in the year 1992 and was made in a movie in 1996 that won nine academy awards. The novel beat 4 other novels in an online poll that received a total of 9,000 votes.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw elected to MIT board

India’s biotech queen Kiran Mazumdar Shaw has been elected as a full-term member of the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Shaw is also ranked among the world’s most influential people in bio-pharma by Forbes magazine. Shaw was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in 2006.

J.P. Nadda inaugurates the NIMHANS Academy

J P Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare inaugurated the NIMHANS Digital Academy. The Academy will train 50 people in the virtual classroom with a cell phone/mobile phone with 3G connection required at the receiver’s end. It will serve the purpose of mental health care needs and will increase the capacity of human resources for mental health by training doctors, nurses.

Research institute to come up at Maghar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a public rally and lay the foundation stone of a research institute at Maghar in Uttar Pradesh. This will mark the 500th death anniversary of Kabir Das, the mystic poet and saint. PM will visit the Sant Kabir cave and unveil a plaque to mark the laying of foundation stone of the Kabir Academy.

New course under GIAN launched

NITI Aayog has launched a new course on ‘Urban Analytics – Evaluating and Measuring Sustainability of Cities’ at IIT, Roorkee. The course was launched under Global Initiative on Academic Network (GIAN). The course will provide an understanding and analysis on the urbanisation and its impacts that would help in evaluating the conditions of sustainability in Indian cities.

Lalit Kala Akademi gets new Chairman

Artist and sculptor Uttam Pacharne has been appointed as the chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi. Currently, he is a member of the advisory committee, Kala Academy, Goa. He is the recipient of National Lalit Kala Award and Maharashtra Gaurav Puraska from Government of Maharashtra. The Lalit Kala Akademi or National Academy of Art is India’s national academy of fine arts.

No Nobel Prize in Literature this year

The Swedish Academy has postponed the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature following sex-abuse allegations and other issues within its ranks that have tarnished the body’s reputation. The 2018 winner will be presented alongside the 2019 winner next year. It is the first time since wartime 1943 that the prestigious award will not be given.

MT Vasudevan Nair wins ONV Literary Award

Legendary writer M T Vasudevan Nair has been selected for the ONV Literary Award instituted by the by the ONV Cultural Academy. The award carries Rs 3 lakh. The ONV award for young promising writer has gone to ‘Amma urangunnilla’, a poetry collection by Anuja Akathoottu.The awards were presented by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

India, World Bank sign agreement

25 : The World Bank signed a loan agreement with India for IBRD credit of $125 million for the “Innovate in India for Inclusiveness Project”.The objectives of the project are to nurture indigenous innovation, foster local product development. The project would support consortia of the public, private, and the academic institutions to overcome the key market failures.

Indeed inked pact with TASK

Global job site Indeed has announced its collaboration with Telangana Academy for Skill & Knowledge to support skill development of youth in Telangana. TASK was established by govt of Telangana to enable a platform b/w govt, academia & industry to enhance employability of youth. Through this MoU, Indeed will offer TASK students the chance to attend lectures & career development workshops.

The first International Exhibition of Graphic Prints =Print Biennale India 2018‘ was inaugurated in New Delhi on 26th March which is hosted by Lalit Kala Academy. The participants are from countries such as USA, UK, Sri Lanka, Italy, Mexico, China, Israel, Sweden, Lithuania etc. The event comprised a total of 200 original prints created by Indian and international artists.

Twin navigation satellites launched in China

China successfully launched twin satellites via a single carrier rocket in Xichang of southwest China‘s Sichuan province. This added two more members to its domestic ?BeiDou Navigation Satellite System? (BDS). The satellites and the rocket were developed by the Innovation Academy for Microsatellites at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology

UGC grants autonomy to JNU, BHU, AMU

The University Grants Commission has approved autonomy for 60 higher educational institutions. They include Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindu University & Aligarh Muslim University, which have maintained high academic standards. The selected institutes will remain under the ambit of UGC but will have the freedom to start new courses, off-campus centres & other new academic programs.

RB Pandit takes over as Commandant of INA

Vice Admiral RB Pandit, Flag-Officer-Commanding, Western Fleet at Mumbai, took over as the Commandant of Indian Naval Academy. He replaces Vice Admiral SV Bhokare who handed over responsibilities to Vice Admiral Pandit after a tenure of over 15 months. He has also been the Naval Adviser at the High Commission of India at Islamabad, Pakistan.
