Sugarcane production goes upto 780 mt. tonnes

Sugarcane production in the country has gone up from 526 million tonnes to 780 million tonnes. The area under the crop too has increased from five million hectares to seven million hectares, S. Ayyappan, Director General, Indian Council for Agricultural Research and Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Government of India. He was speaking at the 99th Foundation Day and launch of the Centenary celebrations of Sugarcane Breeding Institute. “The worth of produce is expected to rise from  

 70,000 crore to   1 lakh crore by 2020. The role of the Sugarcane Breeding Institute, with the strength of 70 scientists in this is very significant. It has so far developed 2,900 varieties”, Mr. Ayyappan said.
