The Union Cabinet on June 29, 2016 approves the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission. The salaries and arrears, effective from January 1, 2016, will be made applicable now.

CCTVs made mandatory in all schools

Concerned over the safety of children from trouble in schools, the State government has made it mandatory for all schools, including private institutions, to install closed circuit television (CCTV) units on their premises. As per an amendment brought to the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies (Installation of CCTV in Public Buildings) Rule 2012, all schools must flx CCTV units at multiple points – one per every 300 square metre – from where the movement of public could be closely monitored. Failure to comply with this would result in cancellation or suspension of licence or permission under relevant statutes.

Tamil Nadu is India’s numero UNO factory

Tamil Nadu has the highest number of factories in the country and employs the largest factory workforce, according to RBI data for the financial year 2014. The Reserve Bank of India, for the first time, has published a Handbook of Statistics on state-level data. In terms of capital, Gujarat has been leading the country since 1991 with a cumulative investment of over Rs. 5.4 lakh crore in 2014. Maharashtra with Rs. 4.8 lakh crore and Tamil Nadu with an investment of Rs. 3.8 lakh crore came second and third in the list. Odisha and Uttar Pradesh took the fourth and fifth slots while pan-India figure for cumulative investment stood at Rs. 33 lakh crore. There are more than 2.24 lakh factories across the country of which 37,378 units are in Tamil Nadu, accounting for 17 per cent of all units.

UNGA elects Ethiopia, Bolivia, Sweden and Kazakhstan as non-permanent members of UNSC

UNGA elects Ethiopia, Bolivia Sweden and Kazakhstan as non-permanent members of the UNSC. The two-year terms of the new members will begin from January 2017 and run through December 2018. For the fifth seat, Italy and the Netherlands are elected. Italy will serve for 2017 and the Netherlands for 2018.
