No major allies, built alliance only with people : Jaya
Proving most opinion polls and exit polls wrong, AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa on Thursday retained control of the levers of the government in Tamil Nadu. She also made history by leading the party to a second consecutive term in government for the first time since K. Kamaraj’s and M.G. Ramachandran’s reign in 1954 and 1984 respectively. In essence, she ended the ‘reigme change’ that has been occurring in the State once every five years for the past 27 years, since 1989. Thanking the people of Tamil Nadu for reposing their faith in her again, Jayalalithaa said, “I cannot find enough words in the dictionary to adequately express my feelings… As a mark of my gratitude to the people. I will discharge my duties with renewed vigour and strive to fulfil all promises.” Jayalalithaa has led the party to victory almost on its own strength. Of the 234 seats that the party contested, the AIADMK won in 134 and more or less retained the vote share it recorded in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Candidates of six alliance partis also contested under the AIADMK’s ‘Two leaves’ symbol.
