International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and Transatlantic Slave Trade observed – 25 March

International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade 2015 was observed globally on 25 March 2015. The theme for the year 2015 is Women and Slavery. The theme is a tribute to the many women who suffered and died during the slave trade. On this occasion the United Nations (UN) unveiled a permanent memorial for victims of transatlantic trade, named as Arc of Retrun, at the UN headquarters in New York. The memorial reminds not only the gross injustice done to African slaves but also the successful journey of the UN in restoring their dignity by actively condemning the practice. The Arc was unveiled by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade on 25 March 2015. India contributed 260000 US dollar to the memorial which was built under the supervision of Haitian-American architect Rodney Leon.

India to grow at 7.8 per cent in 2015-16 : ADB

The Asian Development Bank projected India’s growth rate to surpass China and improve to 7.8 per cent in next fiscal and further to 8.2 per cent in 2016-17. The Asian Development Outlook, an annual publication of the ADB said, India’s growth and investor confidence will improve on the back of government’s structural reform agenda and improved external demand. It forecast that India’s growth will improve from 7.4 per cent in current fiscal to 7.8 per cent in 2015-16 and further to 8.2 per cent in 2016-17.

Cricket greats Sachin, Ganguly, Laxman inducted into BCCI’s high-powered advisory panel

Former greats Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman on Monday joined the BCCI in a newly-constituted advisory panel to guide the board in all matters related to the game. It has been learnt that Thakur and president Jagmohan Dalmiya will consult with the panel on all major cricketing decisions. Board wants batsmen to specifically speak to Tendulkar before any tough international assignment. Ganguly might well be consulted for preparing a blueprint for success of the team overseas with Laxman working on the bench-strength and the new talent coming in through the system.
