Gold sales soar at post offices

Post offices too-have emerged as hubs of gold coin sales in the recent months on April 24, Akshaya Tritiya day the designated post office in the city sold a whopping 5.4 kg of gold coins of varying sizes, wrth newly  1.60 crore. This was 20 per cent more than last year`s sale. Sales that had dipped owing to volatile prices have bounced back this Akshaya Tritiya season. Officials of the Postal department say the purity of gold coins and the trustworthiness of post offices are the reasons for customers buy from them. The discount of six percent, which is avoidable till June 30, proved another attraction. The Department sold nearly 22 kg. in post offices across the state on April 24 alone, earning a revenue of  31.83 lakh. The price of the coin is fixed based on the prevailing international rate of the precious metal. The coins manufactured in Switzerland, are sold in sealed covers.

Plan to put Pollachi in farm tourism map

Taking a cue from its Punjab counterpart about successful `rice towns”, The State Tourism Department plans to promote farm tourism in a big way in and around Pollachi and Thanjavur towns. Currently, the Tourism Department focusses on pilgrimage tourism, heritage tourism, eco-tourism, beach tourism, rural tourism, medical tourism, adventure tourism and cultural tourism, besides promoting hill stations. It also plans to promote heli-tourism and cruises. More areas and different types of tourism are being contemplated to prolong the stay of foreign tourists. While Thanjavur, the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, has been on the radar of the State Tourism department for a long time through tourism, Pollachi, a picture perfect location for films, is an unexplored region. Nestled in the middle of the Coimbatore, Udumalpet, Valparai and Palakkad belt, Pollachi provides an ideal resting place for tourist, said tourism officials.

New committee begins work on property tax assessment

If you are planning to construct a new house or a commerical establishment in the city, you have yet another thing to be careful about. The Chennai Corporation, constituted a committee to verify property tax assessments made by zonal assistant revenue officers. The Committee will meet on Fridays to review property tax assessments made by assistant revenue officials at any of the 15 zones and dispose of all the proposals for property tax assessment during the week. Zonal assistant revenue officer may be in trouble if they under-assesses a property in their area for personal monetary gain. Action will also be taken against all those responsible for under assessment of any property. The effort is likely to prevent those trying to under-assess their newly-built homes or commercial establishments.

New Airport terminal in Chennai

The swanky new terminal is nearing completion and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had a successful trial of the new domestic-terminal 2. The new terminal is an elegant modern structure, defined by its dramatic twin wing-like having roofs, providing a 300-metre long column free space. The open web sufer seel structure, hidden from view, rises to support the twin-curved roofs. The structural framework will allow natural light to penitrate the terminal with a constantly changing pattern of shade and shadow.
